A morally relevant difference

I noticed muddle used this phrase to justify why some are not treated equally with others.

All three words--morally, relevant, and difference are subject to definition and can certainly be interpreted in many ways by many people.
Morally means deciding what is right in a case.
Relevant means bearing on the matter at hand.
Difference means the way one person is identified when compared to another.

I think a better simple way to define when something is a right mught be:

whether or not everyone gets "enough."

If I feel very ill I should be treated by a physician whether I can pay him or not.

If I am eating adequately a balanced diet, then I have no right to a big steak unless I can pay for it.

It is not difficult nor does it require a philosopher to explain it.

Who is this that darkens counsel without knowledge?

Bonkers begins by appealing to some sort of relativism: "Morally", "Relevant," and "Difference" are subject to interpretation.

First, most will agree that there are clear cases where one may distinguish between relevant and irrelevant differences. As with my example, being paid more due to seniority or qualification or contribution is a different sort of thing from being paid more for being white or male.

Further, Bonkers apparently fails to notice that, after challenging the objectivity of moral judgments, he/she proceeds immediately to offering some. Any claim to the effect that someone does or does not have a right to something is a moral judgment. All moral judgments presuppose some sort of principle in virtue of which they would be true. Some principles are more plausible than others. Bonkers thinks that all that is required is an assertion off the top 'o the head, and suspects that any inquiry into such principles is mere gobbledegook.

It is precisely like the drunk guy who says to his buddy, "I think you've had enough tonight, Ralph. You're beginning to look blurry."

Now that eight years of total and complete failure have left us with what you now see clearly, maybe "change" will do the trick?
Gonna take years however to overcome the false, borrowed economy and war tinges.
I did my part!

Darkens council without knowledge, he says!

Since I am without knowledge I will guess at what that means. I think it means I am a dumb ass trying to talk to a smart ass!

One more dumb comment:

Seniority can mean absolutely nothing as far as qualifications is concerned--that is union talk for someone who has paid union dues for a long time. Or has "tenure." Didn't that Indian PhD have tenure?
Chances are they should not be paid more than any other qualified person unless you have a special reason to keep them.

I read bonk's and your speech on rights.

It seems to me that he will make his way in this world in an obvious fashion and you will try the more "blurry" way as you call it!

Judgements by those in power or by those with more money or titles is contained in your philosophy every time you justify this world's shortcomings.

Even in your religious explanations, as a philosopher, you tend to separate humans into the ones with more so-called intelligence from those "others." You even stated in so many words that the changes made between the Old Testament and the New Testament shouldn't have happened since they were absolutes--I suppose in both cases?

Submitted by Bonkers on Sun, 03/08/2009 - 3:52pm.

I noticed your comment about absolutes. There ain't no fiber in anyofem!

The cave men were deathly afraid of the lightning and thunder Gods.
Adam and Eve , or at least Eve, talked to snakes.
Cloven-hoofed creatures were rail bad fer ye.
However hundreds, even thousands of wives was OK. As many concubines as one could feed. Or, put to work.
I saw a movie where one of the tablets containing the fifteen commandments Moses found was dropped by him and thereby was created the Ten commandments! We have canoned a lot more since then.
I read the gnostic gospels once, I think that is what they are called,
and I writ em off as written by competition to the other scribs!

Now a new Covenant is gospel except fer when it ain't nuf, then the Old Guy takes over sometimes. When applicable or judged morally relevant!
