Fayette bikers will pedal in sub-freezing temperatures through rush hour traffic Tuesday morning in the fourth annual “Georgia rides to the Capitol.”

They’ll be joined by other cyclists at the event to lobby lawmakers and raise support for improved conditions for cycling, including the development of regional systems of both on-road bicycling facilities and multi-use-trails.

Bicycles Unlimited has organized a group of local cyclists as a delegation to ride from Peachtree City to the Gold Dome.

The ride will begin at 8 a.m. at Peachtree City Hall and reach the Georgia Capitol in downtown Atlanta after a challenging 35 miles through Fayette and Fulton counties.

Metro Atlanta Mayors Association (MAMA), Georgia Bikes!, and other event sponsors will host over 1,000 cyclists from the metro Atlanta region.

The cyclists expect to arrive about 11:40 a.m. to coincide with the state legislative session and the arrival of other metro Atlanta delegations.

Complete event information can be found on the event website located at www.georgiaridestothecapitol.org.

I'm a former cyclist who rode off-trail mtn. bikes almost daily for over 5 years. So I'm not unfamiliar with the problems bicyclists encounter in traffic.

But I'll be more sympathetic with them when they start following the same traffic laws they demand motorists follow. It's difficult to have sympathy and respect for people who blow through red-lights and stop signs on their bikes while they expect motorists to not do the same.

You can't have it both ways.

Just what we need, another road distraction of men trying to be boys.
Go to the gym.
Anyway, don't these people work? Or are they pilots?

What a waste of time!

I was in a bike shop today and they tried to sell me those tight riding shorts. I suppose that they are not aware of the laws.

Most of them don't follow city ordinance( stay on cart path when visible from the road) or GA State Law( stay as far to the right as possible and no more than 2 together) on our little county and city streets. How will they make it to the capitol in one piece?

Many states have paved shoulders so the cyclists can be safe and stay on the right side of the white line. How much more would it cost to pave an extra 5 or 6ft?

I've got any idea! How about we take that SPLOST money that's supposed to be for the new Bypass and build cart paths everywhere! Get people out of their cars. Biking and hiking, that's the way to go! We went over to Lake Horton the other day and walked the trail. If we had trails like that everywhere, we wouldn't have to drive across town.

A whole bunch!!!! Smiling But what does that matter these days. Our country is broke and sliding in the toilet and these guys want to piss away more of the future assets of this country on bike paths? Puzzled

First and most important I wish all of the riders tomorrow a safe and productive ride to the capital and I applaud their efforts to improve conditions for cycling.

Second I have to make an observation about a dangerous trend related to cyclists in the Peachtree City area. I lived in PTC 10 years ago and moved back here a year ago from DC. One huge change I have noticed is that despite having nearly 100 miles of paths in Peachtree City, a huge number of bikers now ride on the streets. This wasn't the case 10 years ago. I've been an avid biker my whole adult life and one of the reasons we moved back here was the availability of the paths for biking. In DC and Northern VA we have miles of paths that help keep cyclists and motorists safe from each other. Here, however, I have had more than a dozen near misses with bikers on the streets while I have been driving at safe speeds and I have observed even more close calls with other motorists. I support the "share the road" initiative going on in cities all over the country but here in PTC there is absolutely no reason why a bike should be on the same road as a car...none.

Opus, I agree with your assessment of the situation. Unfortunately many bikers on the road have a habit of riding two and three abreast covering the entire lane. Staying to the right would certainly relieve the annoyance of being "stuck" behind them.

That said however, having been a path biker my most of my first ten years in town, It gradually became akin to playing Russian roulette with the idiot cart drivers on the paths. On more than a few occasions I wound up off the path to avoid being run over by kids just big enough to peek through the steering wheel, teen age Dale Earnhardt wannabes, and some old duffer golfers in a real hurry to get to the course (or home?).

I guess some common sense in both situations could help, but I'm not holding my breath. Meanwhile my bike gathers dust in the garage.

You can thank vague and ambiguous laws regarding this practice.

40-6-294.

a) Every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable,

b) Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles.

So you have to mindful of (a) but you can ride two abreast (b). That makes real sense. Puzzled

Those of us that are responsible users of our roadways will "narrow down" and not impede traffic. Unfortunately, there are those that don't have a clue. That goes for both cyclists and "cagers" (cyclist's slang for automobile drivers).

You better hope someone doesn't get the bright idea of organizing a 'critical mass' in PTC. Google it if you don't know what it is.

They're a bunch of hoodlums that, in my opinion, do far more harm than good to the cycling community. Those goofballs are misguided.
