Speed Trap

Every day last week while traveling to work at the intersection of Highway 92 and Helen Sams Parkway, I see drivers being pulled over by the Fayetteville Police Department. It is currently a construction area with signs stating double ticketing fines. However, even if there are no construction workers or equipment out, the police are still pulling drivers over if they go over 35 MPH. Since the police department opened their new building on Jimmy Mayefield, it has become a bee hive of activity. I am assuming if the officer doesn't make his quota for the day, he just naps someone on his way back to the precinct. I think it is shameful that these officers are out there giving tickets to the few remaining people that still have jobs, and they are on their way to work! My friends will not go North of Banks Station for fear of being robbed or their cars stolen. I'm sure if these police officers were spending their time near the Provillian, and Banks Crossing, the businesses would profit from it. Let's use our manpower to get the criminals off the street, and stop speed trapping our law abidding, tax paying residents.

I drive through there several times a day and never have had a single issue with a Fayette Police officer. Had a couple times when they had me dead-on-caught and I got the the index finger wave. (thank you very much) But for the most part all you have to know is that they are policing that area and rather than whine about it, simply adjust your speed. Look... here's what you do... you've got a radio, turn it on, punch in 97.1, crank it up, grab your coffee, and chill baby..... Cool

Every day I am pushed to work when I try to maintain the speed limit...I look in my rear view mirror, and all I see is the the front grill of one of those big SUV's trying to force me to speed. The driver is waving their hands at me! But, I will not be intimidated and get a ticket. Slow down folks and the officers can take on the criminals in our county rather than writing tickets!

A speed limit is a speed limit whether workers are in a construction zone or not. The sign says 35, guess what, dont do over 35 or you may get a ticket, no one keeps the speed limits secret. there are no speed traps, just areas where people speed alot.

And honestly lets face it, the cities and counties are hurting for money too, if a city or county can get more revenue by telling law enforcement to write more tickets do you think their not?

Floors me to see everyone and their brother getting mad at cops for giving tickets (one of the many things that they do on any given day good economy or bad) when money gets tight, but no one cries fowl when someone steals millions from the elderly in a retirement scam.

suggarfoot's picture
Submitted by suggarfoot on Fri, 02/27/2009 - 8:12pm.

Examples of speed traps include their usage in the town of Big Cabin, Oklahoma, which raised three-fourths of its revenue from traffic citations, and a significant percentage of that was related to a section of highway where the speed limit dropped from 65 mph to 45 mph. The state of Oklahoma enacted a law in 2004 that penalizes towns where the citation revenue exceeds 50% of the annual budget.[3]

Limiting speed traps
In response to speed trap towns such as Iowa Colony, Texas, the Texas Legislature limited the revenue that smaller cities may collect from traffic tickets. All funds in excess of this amount are remitted to the state. However, this has failed to stop many speed trap towns such as Wells, Texas on U.S. Highway 69. Oregon and other states have similar laws. Another tactic to discourage speed traps is to limit traffic law enforcement on numbered highways to state police or a similar entity. Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers are not allowed to enforce speed limits with RADAR speed detection devices, but instead must use devices such as VASCAR and ESP. In these techniques, officers record the time that it takes for a vehicle to traverse the distance between two markings (often two white lines).

In Arizona, the use of speed traps has been limited by state laws that limit the amount a posted speed may change in a given distance.[citation needed]

A great big steaming pile of bull manure you're excreting here. First this isn't a speed trap, you come down Jeff Davis the speed limit is 35 mph, you cross 54 and before the construction is sped up to 45, now it stays 35, no big drops, and like I said the cops have to give you 10 mph so these people are doing more then 45 in a 35 zone, if you can't do the speed limit you can't cry when you get a ticket, I just wish I could get them to run radar in my subdivision, I live 7 houses down the road and people are doing 50 or more when they pass my house in a 25 mph zone, where the kids are walking or playing and somehow I feel you would be one of those speeders since you seem to think the limits are just suggestions.

The speed limits are there for a reason, it's obvious that left on our own, we would all be going 80 mph through there. If disagreeing with you makes it a negative response, so be it. BTW, if you law abidding, positive people, with a life, get naped at the provillion for speeding does that make it ok?

It is not my intention to approve excessive speeding but you know as well as I do that 35MPH would tie up traffic at going home time fiercely.

Now if 45 is acceptable, why not 55?

Do you drive for miles at 35? I doubt it.

Another speed trap is from the intersection of GA 85 and 54 towards Peachtree City all the way to the Clinic.

There is no reason for that situation there, otherwise.

They could make just as much fine money whacking these people who switch lanes rapidly and carelessly over and over for fun only.
That is harder work for a traffic cop but more dangerous for the citizens.

45MPH these days with a straight driving car ( no lane switching repeatedly) and lane signalling is just as safe.
Must not be any laws either for horrible mufflers, pulp wood trucks, motorcycles speeding, and pickup trucks with loose crap flying everywhere!

hutch866's picture
Submitted by hutch866 on Fri, 02/27/2009 - 11:29pm.

The 35 section is only at most a couple of miles and that's only because of construction like I said before. I've driven from Fayetteville to PTC on 54 thousands of times and hardly ever see a cop and never had a ticket there, I don't know what you base that on.

I yam what I yam....Popeye

Submitted by Bonkers on Sat, 02/28/2009 - 6:13am.

Maybe Nitpickers knows more than you do!
There is no road construction om 54 West from the courthouse!

I know several people with tickets in this area. The cops sit at the ends of the streets coming into 54.

Now that there is a light for the Tiger Trail, there is no need for 35 to that point even!

All things point to a money maker!
Better for the cops to patrol other places.

Submitted by Insayn on Sat, 02/28/2009 - 8:22am.

You do know that the cops dont set the speed limits right?

They have nothing to do with it. GDOT sets the limits according to state laws and population. If a city wants to change a limit they have to request it through DOT.

suggarfoot's picture
Submitted by suggarfoot on Sat, 02/28/2009 - 7:37am.

I was coming out of Fayette on 54 and saw 3 different people pulled over, blue lights going, and tickets being written. It was around 5pm, just when people are trying to get home. It was ridiculous. We pay enough taxes here. There is no need of this.

I may have told this before, but my teenager was in the car with another. They weren't doing anything, a cruiser pulled in behind them. They turned left, it turned left, right, then it turned right. They stopped at a service station to go to the bathroom and the policeman not only stops as well, but comes into the bathroom with them. That is harassment, but it is kids words against the police, and the judges always side with the police to make money. They are making it to where the kids don't feel protected by the police, they don't trust them. That is the wrong message to send.

Submitted by Insayn on Sat, 02/28/2009 - 9:12am.

I said this to bonkers the other day... you need to stop watching TV, only in Hollywood is there a conspiracy on everything.

In court the burden of proof is on the cop, a cops testimony IS evidence (the same as a video or a finger print at a crime scene). when a cop tells a judge I saw them (add your infraction here) they are submitting evidence to the judge that you did wrong. If your argument is, "I didn't do it" the judge is going to take the officers word over yours. its not a money making scheme its how the Court system is.

Submitted by dollaradayandno... on Sat, 02/28/2009 - 3:54pm.

Under your rules then there is absolutely no need to hold court.

Let the officer just take whatever fine he can get from you, just like they used to do years ago to Florida bound people, and save the court costs!

"Subsidizing that part of Fulton County financially"----- I totally agree Git. When you roll down 74, Tyrone and Fairburn are seamless and indistinguishable. When PTC tossed out Barry Amos and Jim Williams one went to Tyrone and other went to Fairburn. Both became sewer hungry, high density, speed trapping fools. What a mess.

Watch those NASCAR comments.

Wait until Fairburn gets going on that 165-acre shopping center up on 74 north, the one billed as one of the largest shopping centers in GA. And just last week a Fayette County planner was at the Tyrone council meeting to get Tyrone’s collaboration in moving forward with a proposed 480-acre (!) development up near Wendell Coffee’s. I don’t know how Atlanta-bound commuters are going to get out in the morning.

Submitted by mysteryman on Sun, 03/01/2009 - 12:33pm.

Tyrone is bankrupt, and has already squandered all of it redevelopement grants, as well as run off several established bussinesses in the process of restricting their bussiness activities. No knowledgeable corporations are going to relocate to the town of TYRONES. As far as Fairburn and Fayette Countys part in this developement, they talk as if they already own the property in question, while they do not, and even if they used condemnation procedings, with the economy the way it is now it would be 20 years before they could ascertain the funds required by law to compensate the land holders in question, and we are not going to go quietly or cheaply by any means, so do not panic, thanks to the depression we are in now you are good to go for the next 20 years, since it will take at least this long to get back to the way things were. Besides that Coweta county has already started developing Collinsworth Road exit and has recently extended water and sewer there as well and is planning to extend the Coweta North industrial corridor up from hwy 154. Can you say beat ya to it Fayette County, and Fulton County is on the way out, anyway..... PEACE...
