A late afternoon hailstorm swiped through Fayette County Wednesday damaging a number of homes and automobiles.

A possible tornado touchdown was reported in south Coweta County between Moreland and Luthersville near the Meriwether County line. A tractor trailer was overturned, trees and power lines fell and several homes were damaged, according to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency.

The hardest hit areas in Fayette struck by hail were around the Fayette Pavilion, downtown Tyrone and County Line Road near the 911 center, which was also pelted with hail but never lost service, said county emergency management coordinator Capt. Pete Nelms.

The hail was so voluminous in Tyrone that it covered a section of Ga. Highway 74 and completely halted traffic. The hail also damaged skylights at Sandy Creek High School and Flat Rock Middle School.

Several bloggers reported that hail up to grapefruit size caused heavy damage to autos, in some cases busting out windshields. One blogger who lives outside Tyrone near Line Creek reported that the hail damaged a car windshield, tore through the roof of a convertible and dented siding on the home.

Another blogger reported that the hail barrage in the Barnes and Noble area lasted roughly 15 minutes with some of it as large as grapefruit.

In the span of an hour and 45 minutes, Fayette endured two different tornado warnings, a severe thunderstorm warning and a significant weather alert, Nelms said.

Fayette's weather warning sirens sounded alerts before 9 p.m. in advance of thunderstorms hitting the area while the county was under a tornado warning.

Also just before 9 p.m. the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for a storm heading towards the Brooks area. The watch expired after 9:12 p.m.

The earlier storm caused a power loss at several stop lights in the county including one at Ga. Highway 54 and Carriage Oaks and Ga. Highway 74 at Jenkins Road.

Fayette County 911 was flooded with calls during and immediately after the storm, many from homeowners with damaged property or burglar alarms set off by a loss of power.

Other storm damage reports from GEMA include:

Oh my! That's a sad news. I wonder if there are cheap cars for sale that are built with a bullet proof material, allowing no rocks, hailstorms or bullet guns to go thru? And that houses should have an underground floor if in case a big storm or a tornado comes and passes by.yorba linda auto glass

I live off of 54 in a subdivision near ptc. It looked so weird outside and my mom (55) was in her room panicking. I find weather fascinating. I was taking pictures and I heard the most scariest sound I have ever heard. It was so hard to describe. The hail came down and I was born and raised in Fairburn and never seen hail that big. I was watching the news and yeah, we got off lucky but its just me and my twin's (19) nature to want to see a tornado. She goes to school up at a college in downtown atlanta so she didnt witness what we did here. I heard on the weather channel that an EF4 was in Tyrone. That is like next in line to the grand daddy of the tornadoes...an EF5. Whether it touched down or not is a mystery. I don't think nothing like this will happen in our neck of the woods again. We'll see what the spring time has to offer.

The hail was huge! I've lived in GA now over 25 years and never do I remember seeing hail that size. It damaged one of the car's windshields, but all told we got off lucky. That sky and that wind was an ominous sight to see just before the storm. You just knew something wicked this way was coming!

We were on our way back from Newnan yesterday driving a friends truck and pulling a trailer. As we got on Sandy Creek road, I said "That looks odd". The cloud had a green shade to it and you could see the rain coming down. As we neared Tillman Road it was raining big splats, then small hail. By the time we made it to our driveway it was baseball sized. It made a couple of small dents in the truck hood. I collected a big bag of hail and put it in the freezer. The hail stones were as big as my hand. The power was out for 2 hours. It came back on in time to watch Lost.

I live outside Tyrone along Line Creek and we got the core of the hail storm. It started as dime size then just kept building up to baseball size over aperiod of about 5 minutes. We had so much hail that the ground and road was completely covered up to a 1-2 inches deep, more were it drifted up. In fact as of 8:30 AM the next morning, 13 hours later, we still have hail in the yard!

I lost a car windshield, tore the top to my convertable, dented all the alumimun siding on the windward side of the house, stipped off a couple of sheets of siding, put holes in the top of the doghouse, and completely shreaded my American Flag on the flagpole. The ground is completely covered with pine needles as the storm almost completly denuded the trees. No telling how bad it has damaged my roofing; I guess I'll get a roofing contractor to come in to inspect.

At least the house is still here....

My family lives in between peachtree city and Fayetteville in a neighborhood off of highway 54 and we were inside our open garage watching the event unfold and a funnel cloud was actually decending but never touched the ground. A lot of large branches and some trees fell from the violent swirling winds as the cloud descended and I think they were around 90 mph and the hail, that was softball size, actually was spinning as it hit the ground and damaged some of our vehicles and things on our house. I'm just very thankful no one was injured which is great.

The barrage of hail in the area behind Barnes n Noble lasted for at least 5 minutes of large grapefruit sized hail, and 10 minutes of marble to golf to baseball varing size. The roads ended up flooded with a mix of rain, hail, and tree limbs. Not much damage to the surrounding cars but with the ground covered in hail of various sizes I'm sure some damage happened somewhere. However when I returned home to South Fayette near Lakemont the roads and yards seemed untouched, it was a crazy sight after seeing the sky bombard the earth and all in its way.

Just after the hail stopped, we walked outside to check hubby's vehicle. No damage that we saw. You were outside looking around and we saw the wife pull her vehicle into the garage. Did her car get hit while driving? Yes, that we the biggest hail I have ever seen.

Lindsey - your neighbors got beat up with that hail, too.

I'm down the street from you and all our vehicles (that were at home) were in the garage or under a roof of some sort. If we didn't have the cover over our parking pad, our son's vehicle would look like a golf ball now, too. Sorry to hear of your damages.

We're praying NOT to have roof damage, as we just put a new one on two years ago!

kjam - hope your vehicles parked outside are okay, and everything else at your house.

That was the weirdest hail I've ever seen in my life!! Glad we put some in the freezer - acey was stunned when he got home from work and saw I didn't exaggerate about the size of it.
