Palin Campaign Clothes Complaint Dismissed: Little Coverage in Old Media

Remember how everyone in the Old Media delighted in lambasting Governor Sarah Palin when the GOP bought all those clothes for her use during the McCain campaign? Remember how it was reported as nearly a foregone conclusion that these purchases must have somehow been illegal? It was even bigger news when the left-wing group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed an ethics complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against the GOP. The whole thing was the talk of the Old Media, as you may recall.

Well, as of May 15, the FEC ruled that there was no ethics violation and the clothing spending was deemed legal. One would think that this news concluding the story would make as big of a splash with the Old Media as the beginning of the tale did. Naturally, crickets have been heard throughout the media establishment as little notice has been paid to this story.

Ethics Complaint on Apparel Dismissed

June 3, 2009, Anchorage, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin today welcomed news that another ethics complaint has been dismissed. This is the 14th ethics complaint filed against the governor or her staff that has been resolved with no finding of a violation of the Executive Branch Ethics Act. Those complaints contain 22 separate allegations, all of which have been found to be without merit.

The complaint, filed by Linda Kellen Biegel, a blogger designated by the 2008 Democratic National Convention to represent Alaska bloggers, alleged that the governor violated the ethics act when she acted as the official starter of the Iron Dog snow machine race in February while wearing a jacket with the name Team Arctic, a logo of the Arctic Cat Company. The complaint accused the governor of using her position and state resources to serve her personal financial interests. The complaint also alleged that the governor used state resources to promote a personal interest.

Well, well, well, look who didn't pay her taxes. You'd think that after she cheated Alaska out of the money in the first place by charging per diem for staying in her own house she would at least declare it as income.

She sounds like Charlie Rangle... didn't know she had housing income.

I can't wait for Talk Radio to get hold of this! I'm sure there'll be a storm. Right?

While I would never have filed for Per Diem while staying in my own house, note that what she did was legal at the time and she owes taxes now only because of a recent state reversal of policy, which will cause a change in her W-2 Forms.

this story was posted back in Feburary and now you are just posting this. Old news and it has been corrected and she has done nothing wrong. Nice try though. What is current, is Obamanation is selling this country to China and has in a few short months dug an 11 trillion dollar hole that yours and my greatgrandchildren will still be paying for. How do you sleep at night and support what Obama has done. You should be ashamed in yourself for being so blind. You are willing to vote democrat no matter what it costs and that is very sad indeed. Socialism here we come. And I'll just bet if we had the opportuntiy to look at your finances through every orifice we could find stuff wrong too.

I couldn't resist piling on. (Thus the 'oops too late' comment.)

Besides, mine comment so funny that I thought it was worth the rub.

By the way you guys are really really quiet about the King's policies lately. Unemployment got you down? North Korea? Increased violence in Iraq? Gitmo "detainees" (don't you love that word), come on...... your not disappointed are you?

JeffC's picture
Submitted by JeffC on Thu, 06/11/2009 - 8:07pm.

Unemployment is a result of the Bush/Republican policies and if you look at the charts the rate of increase is abating. Obama will take credit for the inevitable recovery which probably would have happened anyway but the R's gave away the issue by claiming the stimulus wouldn't work and voting against it. North Korea? Yep, I sure wish Bush et. al. hadn't let them develop nuclear weapons. Too bad they abrogated the Agreed Framework which had locked up the fuel rods and had allowed the IAEA inspectors to guard them. Violence in Iraq? Let's not even go there. Gitmo? Another Bush legacy mess for the Dem's to clean up.

On the other hand, look at the election in Lebanon. Major blow to Hezbollah! International press credits it all to Obama and his new foreign policy. Same for Iran. Ahmadinejad's in the fight of his life because of Obama's policies.

Disappointed? You're still listening to too much talk radio.

I just bought a rotisserie for my grill. Life is good.

Submitted by MacTheKnife on Fri, 06/12/2009 - 10:06am.

Come on Jeff, the rate of increase is abating? LOL Your boy lost over 3 million jobs on his watch already, more on the way, unemployement has already exceeded any maximum he promised under his (approved) 'stimulus package'. and the best you guys have is "..the rate of increase is abating"? Yea, we are losing jobs but not as many as we lost last month? lol... OR yea, he's a serial killer but he is killing fewer now than he killed last month... LOL

If you truly like graphs, why not you look at the escalation of violence in the last six months in Iraq and Afghanistan under the Obama watch. (How do you feel about reading Miranda to the terrorists we capture.... that will scare the hell out of them ... "YOU have the right to remain silent ... and YOU have the right to counsel.... " )

Look at the graphs for government spending and the national debt increases in the last six months. Oops....

Look at the number of car dealership closings .... those jobless numbers are not even in yet.

So what are you saying? Your new strategy is on the left is - "we will not take responsibility for anything negative"? That's the age old liberal strategy Jeff.

I don't get all the paranoia about talk radio. If 58 million people can conclude that 2 trillion + 2 trillion = 4 trillion, it isn't really rational to assume that they are all listening to 'talk radio', it's PARANOIA Jeff.

Besides, you should know that those of us that work for a living can't sit back and listen to talk radio.

I have always liked and respected your father as a good and honorable man but always hated his policies and political bent. I feel differently about Obama. I like him on a personality level and I think he is charismatic and funny but I truly feel his character and judgement are both fatally flawed.

On a side note:

I will be out of town for a bit - bloggers keep the ideas and opinions flowing! This is an exercise of your first amendment freedoms that many have served and some have died to secure.

What do you see as a long term shift in our economy under President Obama. If we evolve into confiscatory taxation of the upper third of Americans, do you see a corresponding destruction and unemployment in industries such as luxury shipbuilding and general aviation? What do you think the top marginal rate is going to settle at?

Well, well, well, look who can't read. You'd think that after JeffC read the article he would realize that she wasn't a tax cheat that , per the article,
At the time, the state finance director said the practice was permitted because Palin's official "duty station" is Juneau, the state capital, which is 600 miles from Wasilla.

Palin often stayed in her lakeside home in Wasilla and drove 45 miles to Anchorage, to a state office building where she conducts most of her business.

Reimbursement for legitimate business expenses is not considered taxable income under the Internal Revenue Code, tax lawyers said.

Not taxable income...therefore NO TAX WAS OWED!!

But Hey that's typical of the Liberals...Just make it up!

The article also stated the following :
Palin said many of the per diem expenses occurred while plumbing was being repaired in the governor's mansion in Juneau. She said she could have billed the state for hotel or apartment lodging but opted against that, "knowing that we're going to spend quite a bit of time here [in Wasilla], especially those months where the remodels were taking place in the governor's mansion. And we would disclose my per diem, we wouldn't try to hide it."

Yep she could have billed for a hotel, equivalent to the Governors residence in Juneau and that would have been what...$200 or $300 dollars a night? Instead she only charged roughly $54 a night! Yep..she's a cheater.

bad_ptc's picture
Submitted by bad_ptc on Thu, 02/19/2009 - 7:19pm.

Jeff, what the article failed to mention was that Palin probably tried to submit per diem expenses for each of her kids and the dog-sled racer as they too were ‘officially invited’ to accompany her at their house during her stay.

Palin also charged the state a per diem on Thanksgiving Day 2007.

U. S. Office of Personnel Management

Official Worksite for Location-Based Pay Purposes

If the employee's work involves regular travel or the employee's work location varies on a daily basis, the official worksite is the location serving as the base for the employee's work activities as determined by the employing agency.

I give you three guesses who gets to make that determination at the Governors office.

Temporary Changes in Work Location

* If an employee is authorized to receive relocation allowances under 5 U.S.C. 5737 and 41 CFR part 302-3, subpart E ("Employee's Temporary Change of Station"), in connection with a long-term assignment (i.e., 6 to 30 months), the work location for the long-term assignment is considered the official worksite for pay purposes.

* If an employee is temporarily reassigned or promoted to another position in a different geographic area, the temporary work location is considered the official worksite for pay purposes.

A few things to consider:

“Palin often stayed in her lakeside home in Wasilla and drove 45 miles to Anchorage, to a state office building where she conducts most of her business.” If indeed that is the case then Palin should consider changing her “Official Duty Station” to where she conducts MOST of her business.

As Palin claimed that the Governor’s mansion was undergoing plumbing modifications that prohibited her from staying there in the first place her claim of “Official Duty Station” doesn’t apply. (See “Temporary Changes in Work Location“ above)

Additionally, Palin’s “Official Duty Station” is NOT the Governor’s mansion but rather the Governors Office, Alaska State Capitol, Juneau, AK 99801.

Question: Was it ever verified that the $150,000 worth of clothes got ‘donated’ as promised?

and you would be too.. if the IRS changed the law after you had already paid your taxes.. and by the way it goes for all the State employees including the Legislators themselves.. They owe back taxes as well.. I know you saw that part of the story too.. Right?

"During her first 19 months in office, Palin charged the state 16,951 dollars in "per diem" allowances for spending 312 nights in her home. The allowances were intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while she was traveling on state business.

The state this week reversed a policy that had treated the payments as legitimate business expenses under the Internal Revenue Code, said state administrator Annette Kreitzer.

Payments to employees charging "per diem" expenses to stay in their own homes will be treated as income subject to taxes, Kreitzer said, and the state will update the employees' W-2 forms."

Hey Jeff.. she owed the Money only AFTER the law was changed.. So your pal OBAMA is still way ahead.. Keep digging though you will eventually find something that makes Barry look good..

However, thjey also believe that forgiveness is in their blood and that it is OK. Over and over.

There is no one on the face of the earth who would think that they are owed per diem from anybody for staying at home. It was her choice to travel to and from work! Take the kids to the Capitol! She wanted to be Governor.

Lifeinptc, I trust you've cleaned up on aisle three after searching the internet for those Palin photo shops.

To the point though. Amoebas don't analyze. They react to stimuli.

If you run anything anti Obama up the flagpole, you will always have a faithful group who react before they even analyze whether they are saluting truth or political hogwash.

Case in point, I ask follow up questions, but all of the replies sans skyspys are up at my amoeba line. Why no point by point answers? Let's dig in:

Skyspy, what changed in the week between Judd Gregg offering himself in the spirit of bi-partisanship and his withdrawal? Don't just make stuff up. What changed? Y'all have been telling us that President Obama is a "socialist" since he was an Illinois Senator. Did Gregg not get those memos? Was he just "sitting back scratching himself" and not paying attention? What are TAXPAYERS paying him to do? Not influence policies?

The politics of census taking:
The census has been politicized since 1910! Are conservatives just now admitting this? this started three weeks ago? That is a laughable and FALSE assertion.

Medical service rationing? When, where, and how did it start? Tell us. Don't just cut and paste internet fodder.

Millions of middle classers "dependent on government?" Why? When did this happen? Was it an instant? A process? Tell us.

Hand outs of welfare to America's middle class? What did you call the previous administration's $600 checks? And if you call it welfare, how did that start three weeks ago?

Guys, if you want to ever be the majority party ever again, you might actually consider bringing forth ideas; or not. I've made it clear that it suits me fine that you champion abstinence for thee but not me Palin and sit on the sidelines watching your party's "no" votes trampled by democrats and bi-partisan republicans.

Just don't expect us all to fall in line with what you guys "liberally" refer to as TRUTH.

And he said tell the "blogger bully" S.Lindsey that his meds are ready for pickup at Wal-Mart. That wasn't President Obama, in case you wanted to ask.
It is hard to get in to say anything because it's so clogged up with your nonsense. So I am entertained from outside the room by the Citizen.com clown. Why don't you do as one of your friends asked you to do....leave the rubbish out and make your points with decent and respectful posts? And most of all stop lying.
Your standards couldn't get any lower, so you can easily see what is up yours. Wow...that was good.

BTW muddle...I love Eric Clapton too. He will come to Atlanta soon and I want tickets. He will always be awesome.

Now there is something we have in common, Eric Clapton. Sad to say, I remember Eric Clapton and the Cream . . .durn if that doesn't say how old I am. On along trip driving out west listened to Clapton all the way out there and back, like to have worn that cassette out . . .oops another age clue.

Hope y'all are doing well. How was that Florida trip?

Have you seen the recent work Clapton has been doing with Steve Winwood? I caught some on PBS a few evenings ago. Terrific! (Derek Trucks is a part of the lineup in the linked clip.)

The Florida trip was great, as usual. We return for round two in a couple of weeks.

Florida again in a couple of weeks! How very nice for you.

Farrakhan bid to GOP

The only time he tried to join a political party is was the Republican Party. Robert Novak wanted him in but was overruled.

Here's an interview he did with NBC:

NBC interview with Min. Farrakhan

He doesn't like Clinton or Lieberman and he wants to break the link between blacks and the Democratic Party.

TR: Black Americans voted overwhelmingly, nine out of 10, for Bill Clinton.

MLF: Yes.

TR: Is that a good thing?

MLF: No, it is not. I feel that our people, who were once Republicans, were very loyal to the Republican Party because of what Abraham Lincoln did. When Franklin Delano Roosevelt came up with the New Deal during the Depression and Black folk found in him a person who was sensitive to the needs of the poor, they left the Republican Party and became Democrats. Now, Black people are taken for granted in the Democratic Party and not even sought after in the Republican Party. But there is a substantial vote that must not be taken for granted by either party, and we hope to break up that as well.

He's a Republican.

He and Fred are fellow travelers.

Jeff - Prove the Calypso Louie is a Republican. You can't.

However, I would be very surprised if Farrakhan didn't vote for barry, which would make him a Democrat.

After all, Calypso Louie was the one that Barack Obama's Church of 20 years honored.

Face it, there are many libs out there that think that he is the messiah. They are so easily decieved.

I don't have to prove anything at all. Farrakhan tried to join the Republican Party. It was widely reported. I've cited the records. You were the one claiming that he was a Democrat contrary to all of the available documented evidence. The burden of proof is entirely yours to back up your assertion. He's just another example of a Republican or Republican wannabe claiming Obama is the messiah. Just like you do. It seems perfectly logical to me that y'all are birds of a feather flocking together.

We're still waiting for you to produce a Democrat that has claimed Obama is the messiah.

Another statement that you can't back up.

We're getting used to that.

Again, if it makes you feel better, go ahead and go on with the dillusional thought that Calypso Louie votes Republican. You dems seem to like living in a fantasy world, the kind where people think that government spending taxpayer money can solve all of America's problems.

Just remember, barry was a 20-year member of the hate-filled, racist church that honored Farrakhan.

My sorrow was because of your fundamental misunderstanding of the facts.

Instead, you drag out the sad old worn out guilt by association argument gain. Obama's church did something and so Obama is, ipso facto, in lock step agreement despite his statements to the contrary. Suits me if that's the leg you're trying to stand on since the overwhelming evidence is that the vast majority of the American never did and never will buy that losing argument.

Are you giving up trying to prove your claim that Farrakhan is a Democrat like you said or are you just waiting for enough time to pass for us to forget you ever made it.

Fred Garvin's picture

The issue is that there is a person, Farrakhan, probably a democrat based on his speech claiming the Obama is the messiah.

You have failed to prove that Louie is a republican, so I really don't have to prove anything to you. His words seem to indicate that he is a democrat, and that is good enough for me. If that bothers you, then too bad.

The fact that Obama was a member of the hate-filled racist church is even more relevant now because it gives us insight into why he wants to turn America into a Socialist country.

Why would I care? I'm used to these circular arguments from you. You fabricate a claim that Farrakhan is a Democrat to bolster one of your arguments, then when you're called on it we've now gotten to the, “... so I really don't have to prove anything to you... “ stage from you again, which is what your arguments typically degenerate to.

I'm fully willing to accept that. However, it would be refreshing and astonishing if just once you could prove one of your claims with some type of real evidence.

"Oh God" Heard From MSNBC Set As Gov. Jindal Appears for GOP Response

As Louisana Gov. Bobby Jindal approached the camera to deliver the GOP response to Pres. Obama last night, someone on the MSNBC set whispered "Oh God." But the whisper was loud enough to be heard by all 3 people who were watching MSNBC.

That "oh god" uttered was the overall opinion from most who viewed Jindal's response last night. Poor guy looked so frightened and scrawny as he channeled Mr. Rogers with his goofy childhood stories. It was embarassing.

Really? Jindal is the "Great *non* White Hope" the Repub's are trotting out to the masses? He's just another tool.

Oh, this is going to be fun! Laughing out loud

This is the hope of the Republican Party??? That may have been the worse political speech I've ever heard and I've heard a few. It was awful, awful, awful. I nearly fell off my couch laughing about his Katrina remarks. Just simply cringe invoking embarrassingly bad.

Farrakhan quoted in context during his speech, said, "Sen. Obama is not the Messiah for sure, but anytime, he gives you a sign of uniting races, ethnic groups, ideologies, religions and makes people feel a sense of oneness, that’s not necessarily Satan’s work, that is I believe the work of God."

I did not say the Democrats said he was the messiah, his supporters and followers believe that. He IS their savior.

And your right, half of this stuff doesn't have anything to do with bush, the stuff on the list says "change we can believe in" it's a joke, many of the things they say Bush did wrong, are continueing and other changes are for the worse.

lost two national elections? I would guess you are referring to democrats regaining control, for now, in 2006.

The democrats took a bigger majority, NOT because people are against the republicans, most of these races were narrow wins and these democrats rode the coat tails of Obama supporters. Here is where I get called a racist, the black supporters that put him over the top also got those democrats in. I give you proof, 600,000 African Americans were registered to vote in FL for the last election and none of them voted, this time they did, why, for one of their own, and in doing that across the country, they got more democrats elected. If it had been Hillary and NOT Obama, your party would not be in power today.
