Beaten wife ‘feared for her life’Tue, 02/17/2009 - 5:05pm

A Peachtree City man accused of beating his wife left bruises “pretty much all over her body” from the neck down, a police detective testified in court yesterday. Lt. Jennifer Michel also told the court that Michael William Ellicott, 48, threatened his wife that “he would kill her” if she reported any of the abuse to police. The victim fled their Portico Place home Jan. 20 after the assault, Michel said, because “she was afraid if she did not leave that night she would be dead.” Michel said the bruises she referred to were seen by police after the victim was struck multiple times with drumsticks, and punched and kicked by her husband during the Jan. 20 incident. Ellicott has remained in jail since without bond. He is charged with rape, three counts of aggravated battery (family violence), aggravated assault (family violence), false imprisonment (family violence) and two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree because the violence occurred while the couple’s two children: a 16-year-old son and a 12-year-old daughter, were home. Michel’s testimony came during a probable cause hearing in Fayette County Magistrate Court. Magistrate Charles R. Floyd Jr. ordered Ellicott bound over to formally face the criminal charges at a later date; prosecutors expect to present the case to a grand jury for indictment in early March. Michel said one of the wife’s wrists was broken during the assault but did not remember exactly how. Doctors also determined that her other wrist was previously broken about two weeks before, Michel said, noting that the victim told her it may have occurred when her husband forced her to place her arm in a door and shut it as a punishment. Michel said the Jan. 20 assault occurred in the couple’s basement after Mr. Ellicott became angry at something his wife said to him. She said Ellicott took a break in the fight to answer a phone call from a colleague at Delta Air Lines and afterward resumed the beating, according to the victim. Michel said the rape charge stems from a separate incident Jan. 18 in which the victim told her that Mr. Ellicott verbally forced the victim to have intercourse against her will. Mr. Ellicott did not physically restrain the victim, but she stayed because she was afraid he would beat her if she didn’t comply, Michel said. Part of the evidence seized by police included some documents referred to as letters. The letters contained sexual content and were written on the couple’s laptop computer by the victim as Mr. Ellicott stood over her and told her what to write, Michel said. Part of the background leading up to the letters is the victim’s account that Mr. Ellicott is upset about an affair she had a number of years ago, Michel testified. login to post comments |
