City to ‘ballpark’ cost for new MacDuff path

Developer may foot bill to close other path in Cedarcroft

Peachtree City officials are working with Cedarcroft developer Mike Rossetti to come up with a ballpark figure for installing a path from a tunnel under MacDuff Parkway to the retail area on the east side of the road.

City Council members have indicated that if that path can be built they would agree to taking out one part of a golf cart path that cuts through Cedarcroft. That section of path has led to complaints about traffic at all hours of the night since it leads to the 24-hour Walmart, fast golf cart drivers and general unruliness such as cursing around young children.

That path also sits very close to several homes in Cedarcroft, and one neighbor had a reckless golf cart driven right through their garage door.

Rossetti has said he might be willing to build the new path in order to get rid of the problematic path. But he balked last week during a council discussion as City Engineer David Borkowski pegged the potential cost at $150,000 to build the path.

Rossetti said he thought that would be “a little high” but Borkowski noted that part of the issue is the dramatic slope up from the tunnel. City Manager Bernie McMullen said the path would need to comply with requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Rossetti contended that the section of path causing problems for Cedarcroft residents is because of its heavy use despite the fact that it wasn’t intended to be a main thoroughfare.

Council withheld a vote on spending $14,000 to design the path to wait and see what a new estimate comes back in at. That way Rossetti can determine if he wants to pursue that project or not.

Rossetti said he hoped to spend about $20,000 to $30,000 on the path connection project.

Should stop complaining about the path. They made the decision to purchase they need to live with it or sell their house. Stop whining.

Every small business in this town is expected to give something back to the community. What about Walmaert and Home Depot? What do they ever do for our town? The traffic in Cedarcroft is do to Walmart and Home Depot. So why don't we ask them to help out? This could be a way for them to say; hey thanks PTC for allowing us to be part of our town.

The developer needs to foot the bill and the city needs to make him do it. Rossetti has created this problem by putting the paths in the neighborhood and he needs to be the one to pay to fix the problem. It is great that the city is willing to at least pay for the engineering fees so the developer needs to pony up, admit he shouldn't have built the path, and pay to have it removed and rerouted.

If I was him i would dig up the cart paths and plant grass and trees. People need to use the cart paths that are already there instead of cutting through these peoples neighborhood. For someone who has lived in this city for 33 years I'm tired of people thinking the developers need to pay for everything. The city has that awesome bridge by best buy they can't finish how would they know how much a tunnel would cost.

1. He doesn't own the land.
2. Technically that is the only way to get to the Wal-Mart shopping center by golf cart. You can't drive a golf cart up MacDuff because the speed limit is too high and you are not supposed to cross 74. Until the tunnels and bridges next to Best Buy are opened, the Cedarcroft paths are the ONLY "legal" way to get to that shopping center.

The city would never allow him to remove the path without providing a reasonable alternative.

I remember seeing a path that runs beside MacDuff. There are several 4 way stops on MacDuff where people can get to the paths.

There is a path that runs along MacDuff. It leads to a tunnel just before you get to Discount Tire. It is the other side of this tunnel which is yet to be completed.

naming this path to nowhere "The Modern Political Solution Path"? The fact that it leads to an unfinished tunnel makes it a perfect fit.
