Retail a big issue for council candidateFri, 02/13/2009 - 4:03pm

A Peachtree City Realtor announced this week that she will seek election to the Post 3 City Council seat currently held by Cyndi Plunkett. Vanessa Fleisch said she decided to run in part because she disagrees with some of the major decisions from council in recent years. She cited the recent vote approving a new traffic light on Ga. Highway 54 west as one example where council’s vote didn’t reflect the wishes of residents who spoke out against the light. “People are already sitting in traffic out there,” Fleisch said. Fleisch was also critical of last year’s council vote to sell most of two city streets to a developer to enable a larger shopping center to be built on Ga. Highway 54 West. Without the streets, the shopping center would have been smaller due to the city’s road setback rules. While admitting that some commercial plans may have been in the works for some time, Fleisch said she feels the city has far too much retail space available. “How many drugstores does one city need?” Fleisch said. At the same time, Fleisch said she understood a property owner’s right to develop its property as zoned. She contends the flagging economy will help sort out businesses that will survive from those that won’t. “It’s a balance. Maybe in 10 years we will have more of a need for it,” Fleisch said. Fleisch says her views are in accord with many other Realtors in the city, as she has commiserated her opinions with them. “I was thinking, ‘Am I the only one who is seeing this?’” Fleisch said. Fleisch said she is not sure how she would have voted on the two recent annexations that added more than 1,100 homes to the city. But she admits her views fall in line more with those of Councilman Don Haddix, who has announced he is running for mayor. Fleisch said no one asked her to run for office, and running for office was her idea. Fleisch said she chose to run for Plunkett’s seat based on Plunkett’s voting record. Fleisch said she also thinks the city needs to support the police department more than ever as they will be busier thanks to the economy’s downturn which in turn has made other people “feel more desperate to do stupid things.” Fleisch lives in Emerling Grove in Kedron Village. She has volunteered at Holy Trinity and her children’s schools both private and public. Plunkett’s seat will be up for election in November along with the Mayor’s seat and the Post 3 seat currently held by Steve Boone. None of the incumbents have announced whether they will seek re-election. login to post comments |
