Last Friday, the Fayette County Lady Tigers completed the regular season with a 24-0 record. They did it in amazing fashion, knocking off Mays, the only other unbeaten team in Class AAAA and ranked second in the state behind Fayette, 73-50. The Fayette County Lady Tigers made it to the precipice of a state championship last year, falling to Southwest DeKalb 62-46. Everything they have done so far this season has been to make it back to the final game and emerge victorious this year. Head Coach John Strickland is trying to make his team a state champion, one that battles adversity and weathers the storms that their opponents create. So far, so good. Fayette County has won all three tournaments they have entered this year and are nationally ranked. USA Today has the Lady Tigers ranked 18th in the nation. They are only the second team in school history to go undefeated through the regular season. The 1985-1986 Lady Tigers finished with a record of 26-2, winning 24 straight games. They lost to the eventual state champions, Jordan High School, in the state semifinal. They will open the region basketball tournament at Lithia Springs High School next Wednesday against the winner of the Alexander/Villa Rica game.
