How to cause a depression

How to cause a depression

As part of his early transition into the Oval Office, President Barack Obama would do well to take some time each day reading up on Great Depression history and studying the myriad economic theories surrounding it.

Did you read the article? Maybe if Bush and his advisers had read it - we wouldn't be in this mess now!

Submitted by Full Time Observer on Tue, 02/10/2009 - 10:06am.

I watched the President's press conference last night and have a few observations that are concerning to me:

1. What does it say about his thought processes and personality when he keeps referring to Cabinet members as "MY Treasury Secretary" or "MY Secretary of State"? Aren't they OUR Treasury Secretary or OUR Secretary of State or THE Treasury Secretary or THE Secretary of State. Those kinds of references indicate autocracy.

2. I believe the current economic situation to be real and in need of immediate action. But is it being made into a more dire "catastrophy we may never recover from" in order to push through unnecessary spending without scrutiny?

3. I was troubled that he was reading names off a list for questions and it was outrageously obvious. I know, it is too early for him to know all these people by name and face but it came off as if the questions were "planted".

4. His answers to reporter's questions had the tone of "lecturing" to the person that asked it as if they weren't intelligent enough to understand the answer.

These kinds of things raise my level of concern.

Some good observations there! My thoughts...

I think you're reading too much into this. The president's cabinet is his own, he nominated them and is ultimately responsible for their performance. These secretaries serve at the pleasure of the President, so I don't think it's inappropriate for a President to refer to them as "My Secretary of State", etc. "The Secretary of State" would have been okay too. "Our Secretary of State" in my mind would be inappropriate, seeing as we had no direct input on the nomination...

2. I believe the current economic situation to be real and in need of immediate action. But is it being made into a more dire "catastrophy we may never recover from" in order to push through unnecessary spending without scrutiny?

Times are bad right now, and are as bad as they have been in my lifetime. I don't think you can overstate the case for action, although some of the hyperbole does seem a tad overheated. You have to balance the rhetoric against the obstructionist Republican party, which has been treating the current economic collapse as little more than an opportunity to score political points against an enormously popular President.

3. I was troubled that he was reading names off a list for questions and it was outrageously obvious. I know, it is too early for him to know all these people by name and face but it came off as if the questions were "planted".

I noticed that too and agree with you wholeheartedly. It lacked professionalism.

4. His answers to reporter's questions had the tone of "lecturing" to the person that asked it as if they weren't intelligent enough to understand the answer.

I think in the beginning he was a bit pedantic. He hit his stride about halfway through. The press did not distinguish itself last night...the questions were sophomoric and tended to dwell on minutiae. I cringed when the blue-chip Washington Post wasted its question on Alex Rodriguez. Overall I thought it was a solid "B" effort...and its worth remembering that the previous president took nine months into his first term to marshal enough courage to face the press.

Did anyone see Newsweek.. We are all Socialist now? Are we really like France? Do you really want to be? This pork laden AKA "porkalisious" spending package will push us further down that slippery slope from Socialism to Communism.. Where did my Country go? Where did the people of Sept 12th go? What happened to US getting together and working for the common good?
We are further apart then ever.. The LEFT thinking Obama is as close to a Deity status as one could be while still having fevers over "Bush derangement syndrome" and the RIGHT rolling over and playing dead trying to be Democrat lite..
You can bet some RHINOs will be voting for the Pathetic attempt at pandering that this "BILL" is.
Liberals refuse to see this for it is.. PAYBACK to all the little special interest groups that has paid MILLIONS to the Dems coffers..
One World-One Currency-One Goverment all run by the ONE..

...is on t.v. trying to peddle fear into the minds of Americans.
If his spending bill is so gosh darn great, why the heck does he have to go out on the road and try to convince (read "scare") America into believing that we can spend our way out of this mess that the Senate Democrats caused.

Barack Obama - the worst president in history. Worse than Carter.

Senate Democrats caused? What a laughable assertion. It's the Republican/Bush recession and 70% of the people know it. Of our $10.6 trillion deficit, $8.35 trillion was added under Reagan, Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. Republicans have zero credibility on deficits and budgets. Don't you remember Cheney proclaiming that "deficits don't matter". Now the Dems have to come in and clean up the mess, for which they will get credit in the 2010 and 2012 elections. The only way the Republicans win on this is by hoping and praying for the economy to worsen and stay bad for two years. Now that's a winning platform!

Oh, Fred... he's out pushing his plan and rallying support because that's what leaders do. It's been so long you just don't recognize it. When the plan passes you'll see how that works.

Sorta summed up the Right's arguments.

I find it interesting that the fringe right has redefined "socialism" to mean "anything not proposed by George W. Bush".

"Uhh, this wasn't how I envisioned my presidency to begin....". "I inherited this economy". Blah, blah, blah. You wanted to be the man so bad, it's time to grow a set Barry. Quit whining and making excuses. There is a reason you are having to peddle this thing so hard....

Then he has the nerve to say it is time to put politics aside and do things to help the American people? Where was that concept the last two years specifically and the last 8 years overall? What legislation did you step up and sponsor that was non-partisan to fix things?

If we could have a dollar for every "uh" we just went through, the stimulus package could be cut in half.

Barack Obama throws Joe Biden under the bus

"As reporters started giggling, Obama came close to conceding that Biden was indeed a joke. "You know, I don't remember exactly what Joe was referring to, not surprisingly."

The President went on to say that "I think what Joe may have been suggesting, although I wouldn't ascribe any numerical percentage to any of this, is that given the magnitude of the challenges that we have, any single thing that we do is going to be part of the solution, not all of the solution."

Of course, Biden wasn't saying anything of the sort - Obama knew that and all the rest of us did too."

Submitted by baroombrawl on Tue, 02/10/2009 - 7:09am.

Biden meant what he said! It is such a mess that even with such brains as his and Obama's to work on the problem, they still could fail and we would have a depression, with the odds being 2-1 that they won't.

Good to have a truthful spokesman instead of a coverup character like Cheney!

What has Biden done to you?

Submitted by skyspy on Mon, 02/09/2009 - 8:42pm.

It is really sad. He is just like Bush when it comes to speaking in public.

Also if you want to see our future with this "stimulus package" Read Thomas Woods book Meltdown. Printing money isn't the way to go. Neither is low interest or no interest mortgages. Remember.....that's what got us into this mess. People living way beyond their means. DUUUHHHHH!

Soooo....America needs higher home interest rates? Good luck on selling that concept in the current economic climate! That is a FairTax-class non-starter!

I think that skyspy harbors a secret attraction for Obama, a condition called the "Mandingo Syndrome"

MANDINGO (Hottie)

Seems there's a lot of women these days who are envious of what the Obama's have...

“They (the Obama's) seem to have it all together — a great marriage, beautiful children, a modern day Norman Rockwell family,” said a divorced Harvard grad with children in a top D.C. private school. “Why them, not me?”

People like you asked for this for years!

First you tried to impeach a President for Lying when everyone in Washington lies all of the time.

Then you gave us George Bush, a person off no gravitas.

Then you supported and made rich such people as Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, and others who are total idiots.

This country is made up of all kinds of people and the sooner you guys realize it and treat everyone alike, the sooner such vengeance will die.

S. Lindsey's picture
Submitted by S. Lindsey on Tue, 02/10/2009 - 8:52am.

are your insane rumblings about? I guess the converse is correct also which means.. "PEOPLE LIKE YOU GAVE US CARTER, CLINTON AND NOW OBAMA..
Real winners all..

"First you tried to impeach a President for Lying when everyone in Washington lies all of the time."

So let me get this straight.. It is ok to commit a crime (purjury-Lied under oath)...because everybody does it.. REALLY.. Do I need to explain this one to you.. If you have kids the next time they lie to you just smile and walk away.. because all kids lie... that makes it right and good.. correct?

"Then you gave us George Bush, a person off no gravitas."

Gravitas.. Do you really even know what it means outside of liberal talking points? Somehow I doubt it... I would rather have a President with "NO GRAVITAS.. a created term never used before to describe a President" then to have a President that allows further attacks on our soil because he is unable to stand up against the Terrorist..

"Then you supported and made rich such people as Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, and others who are total idiots."

Nit is your "RICH" envy showing again??? By definition if someone is Rich (unless inherited) then they are not idiots.. You may not like these people because they express an opinion opposite of yours.. but by God this is America and they have a RIGHT to do so.. I know you would love to shut them up.. but you can't so deal with it..

"This country is made up of all kinds of people and the sooner you guys realize it and treat everyone alike, the sooner such vengeance will die."

You are right (finally) on this one.. the Country is made up of different people.. and it is all good as long as they think like you.. right? But I just love to point out the LEFTS HIPOCRICIES..

"you guys realize it and treat everyone alike"

your whole posting here was a diatribe against certain people, but yet you make that statement..

Gravitas (from Latin) is a quality of substance or depth of personality.

Gravitas (specifically dignity, seriousness, and duty) is one of the several virtues that ancient Roman society expected men to possess, along with pietas, dignitas, and iustitia.

"Gravitas" should not be confused with "gravity" in the sense of importance, although they have a common etymology, coming from the Latin for weightiness.
Gravitas include: - Discipline - Strength - Loyalty - Power [Army] - Usefulness - Steadiness

Hypocrisy is acting in a manner contradictory to one's professed beliefs and feelings, or conversely, expressing false beliefs and opinions in order to conceal one's real feelings or motives

Describes you well.. Have a nice day Eye-wink

He answered the questions - honestly! Something we haven't heard in a long, long time! (8 years!!) He uses words that some fifth graders may find difficult - but the message is clear. We Americans have to work together to get out of this mess!
