More Tax Evaders

Another one of Obama's Cabinet fails to pay taxes

barry's cabinet is full of gypsies, tramps and thieves

Former Sen. Tom Daschle, picked by President Barack Obama to lead his health reform efforts, recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in back taxes and $11,964 in interest, according to a Senate document obtained by The Associated Press.
Daschle filed amended tax returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007 to reflect additional income for consulting work, the use of a car service and reduced deductions for charitable contributions. He filed the returns after Obama announced he intended to nominate Daschle to head the Health and Human Services Department.

No change, nothing but more of the same corrupt politicians.

Before carbonunit is nominated for a cabinet post, or any post for that matter, I must confess that I have purchased items on the internet and not paid the state sales tax on them. If I am nominated, then I will pay up, per recent custom.

It's not easy being the carbonunit

Read On.. What type of people do we have running this place.. would you hire this guy?

The Heritage Foundation

During the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, President Bill Clinton mastered the art of burying bad news: release everything late on Friday afternoon and hope everyone in Washington forgets about it by Monday. Only one week into his presidency and it is clear that President Barack Obama is equally adept at this skill. Late Friday night, Obama's Health and Human Services secretary nominee Tom Daschle told reporters that he paid over $140,000 in back taxes and interest to the IRS on January 2, of this year. The $128,000 in unreported income came from the $353,552 he received in consulting fees and the use of a car service from a wealthy Democratic donor in just the three years since Daschle left the Senate.

But Daschle's trouble paying taxes on income he received from wealthy Democratic donors is just the tip of the iceberg. As the New York Times reports this morning, Daschle's post-Senate career, which allowed Daschle "to make $5 million and live a lavish lifestyle by dint of his name" provides "a new window into how Washington works." Much of Daschle's lucre has come from his work for the firm Alston & Bird where "Mr. Daschle has operated in the gap between the popular understanding and legal definition of a lobbyist." While there, Daschle has "consulted" for clients with business before the federal government including two Indian tribes, a firm with heavy stakes in ethanol subsidies, and another with key issues before the Federal Aviation Administration. Not to mention Daschle's work for the supposedly non-proft firm EduCap which allows some students to borrow up to $50,000 a year, sometimes at 18 percent effective interest rates.

But these links between big government and big business are not the most worrisome. Daschle will after all be in charge of health policy, and that is where his income from big business is the most troubling. The Health Industry Distributors Association, which successfully lobbied to kill Medicare's first ever competitive bidding program for health care supplies this summer, paid Daschle $14,000 to deliver one speech at their conference last year. And Daschle was also paid for his policy advice by UnitedHealth, a giant insurance company which receives a third of its revenue from HHS regulated sales of Medicare Advantage and Medicare supplement and prescription drug plans.

Daschle's nomination as Secretary of HHS comes at a crucial time for health care in this country. For more than a decade, the federal government has been gaining more and more control over the total number of health care dollars spent in this country. Today, the private sector spends only 53.7% of all health care dollars, while state and federal government cut the checks for the rest. The combination of the recently passed SCHIP expansion, and the further expansion of eligibility under Medicaid will certainly push government spending on health care well past 50%. But this is only half of the story. If we include all of the state and federal regulations that dictate private spending, the government already controls over 60% of the health care sector.

Daschle and the health care sector are only part of the big business/big government nexus that is killing our economy. The Obama administration is also using the power of the Wall Street bailout purse strings to dictate how cars are made in this country and how financial firms should operate. Just as the New Deal failed to restore economic growth because it tried to marry big government planning with big business profits, so will Obama's new New Deal. Daschle's story is just one window into what the failure will look like.

Gee, I've seen commercials where companies are offering their services to help out the "average" citizen that is having problems with the IRS. Perhaps the President will tell the new Secretary of the Treasury - a tax cheat himself and fifth in the line of the presidential succession - to suspend any further tax court proceedings at least until his cabinet is picked. Barry Again Fails to File Tax Forms

D.C. Council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) has again failed to file his tax returns.

The former District mayor has not submitted federal or city tax forms for 2007 -- the second instance in which he has not filed required returns while on probation for tax offenses, said two sources familiar with the situation.

Obama probably has Marion in mind to head the "White House Office of National Drug Control Policy", no doubt.

Did we really expect anyhting new from Obama? Come on, Obama is simply paying back those he cut back door deals with to get their support. You can already count the number of broken pledges this new president has broken.

Its the same ole tune, they say anything to get elected, then set out screwing us all over again. Say what you will about Bush, But Obama has proven to me to nothing more than wolf in sheeps clothing.

I was astonished by the lack of scholarship and thoughtfulness on the part of either Presidential candidates in 2008. The issues have been reduced to sound bites and promises that are broken on the votes have been counted. Barack Obama promised to run the most transparent White House in history—disclosing donations, shunning lobbyists, and broadcasting important meetings on C-SPAN,Transition captain John Podesta reiterated the point Tuesday when he said Obama's would be "the most open and transparent transition in history."

Um.....Dang you sound Like Bill Clinton. Laughs.

I read the link you posted and IMO Huston is grasping at straws. I realize that Huston is looking for something to criticize Obama with but this really strikes me as weak. I was pleased with the choice of Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff . His job is to knock heads among the WH staff. His not being bipartisan is irrelevant to that position. In fact, I'm kinda looking forward to some fireworks if and when the new SecState starts following her on agenda. If that happens, I think you'll change your mind about Rahm and will find him very entertaining.

As for Henry Rivera, he hasn't been a lobbyist for eight years. Seems like a bit of a stretch to claim that his appointment breaks a promise not to hire lobbyist. Eight years is a long time. Particularly the last eight.

I'm with you. This scenario could rival any drama drummed up on daytime TV. Hillary as Sec 'O' State and Biden as VP... each with extremely large egos and personal agendas. You have to wonder what is muttered under their breaths as they force themselves to become subordinate to that new upstart President Obama and Rahm. Eye-wink The reality is that this could very well be a non-issue. But you have to admit that the elements lingering in the air could form into the 'Perfect Storm' for providing us with some very entertaining viewing. If it busts loose let's get together and throw some Butter Lovers Act Pop Corn into the microwave and watch the show. I'll even melt up some extra butter and salt to drench it down good with.

In this linked post I talked of the irony of a tax cheat criticizing tax cheats.

What struck me in your posts, outside of you posting to your own post, which people do from time to time, was that you had this criticism of the presidential candidates:

"I was astonished by the lack of scholarship and thoughtfulness on the part of either Presidential candidates in 2008."

All while bringing this scholarship to the fore:

"Say what you will about Bush, But Obama has proven to me to nothing more than wolf in sheeps clothing. "

"The issues have been reduced to sound bites and promises that are broken on the votes have been counted."

"Obama and his crew are showing their true colors, the law doesn't appy to them, only us. But then again, right after his election he started breaking promiss even before he was sworn in.."

If you are going to criticize scholarship, bring your high-dollar spell-checker and grammar tester along for good measure. Good Sunday to you. Time to make the doughnuts.

In the town I grew up in, there were two kinds of guys, those that got caught and those that did not. The current financial world is the same. I used a technique in my youth, when I was doing custom built projects for well to do clients, to keep them off my back. I would leave something undone or a little bit off, in an easy place to fix. The clients always would look until they found something, and if I did not leave something easy to fix, they would find something wrong where there was nothing wrong. I believe the Obama team is doing the same thing. I knew he was smart, and now I am thinking he is smarter than I figured.

These are not smart things, or thinking---they are deceitful things by cynical people.

However you are right about people wanting just a little more all of the time to make them feel good.

That is why they buy stuff 70% off! Off of what price, I say.

Ten % off of 1 thousand is better than 70% off of 30$!
Better yet most goods now NEVER sell for the original price ticket--they are marked OFF when racked! I know that for a fact.

Also, those "going out of business, 70% off sales are farces for the most part. The 70% off price is still too high!
Plus they get rid of "junk" that has never nor will ever sell at most any price!.

If we can haggle, we are happy and can assume (ass---u---me)we got a bargain that we didn't. Makes good party talk!

Is the BACKGROUND of the "whistle blowers"

This is so funny I have to post a segment of the USA Today article on the BIGGEST TAX DELINQUENTS IN THE COUNTRY!

"Dick Morris: The former political adviser to Bill Clinton is a Fox News analyst. The IRS filed a $1.5 million tax lien against him in 2003. The state of Connecticut reports Morris owes $452,367 in back taxes and penalties.

Morris says he's reached an agreement with Connecticut and his name will be removed from the next delinquency list. He says he is committed to paying his taxes: "Following a difficult period in my life, I fell into arrears. But since then, I have paid almost $3 million in state and federal taxes."

According to the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS), Morris owed the state $443,915 as of November 1, 2007, making him the state's sixth-biggest tax delinquent at that time. He was also listed as one of Connecticut's 10 biggest tax delinquents as of October 1, 2007, and April 1, 2007. Morris is not cited by DRS on its recent list of "The Top 100 Delinquent Income Taxpayer Accounts" in Connecticut as of November 1, 2008."

I know. I know. Dick Morris doesn't have a job in our federal government, but from a journalistic standpoint, and where Fox "News" is concerned, I use the term "journalistic" loosely, why in the world would you use a guy that owes hundreds of thousands more than the person he is criticizing to deliver this story? That's funny right there!

Cheers

As far as Dick Morris goes... Is he a piece of human debris or what? Any time I see his lips move the channel changes.

I think this should absolutely disqualify Daschle. I can't think of a plausible excuse either for his actions or for keeping him.

It reminds me of that old Steve Martin skit about how to get a million dollars and not pay taxes: first, get a million dollars, then don't pay taxes. And when the IRS asks you about it say: "I forgot!"

As far as I'm concerned this is an ethics test for Obama. I'm hoping they pass.

meanoldconservatives's picture

If this is an ethics test for Barry, it would appear to be a double failure....

"I am running to tell the lobbyists in Washington that their days of setting the agenda are over. They have not funded my campaign. They won't work in my White House."

As Homer would say, "doh" number 1

"WASHINGTON -- President Obama "absolutely" stands by Tom Daschle's nomination to be secretary of health and human services even though the former Senate majority leader dodged paying more than $128,000 in taxes until he after he was nominated.

The president gave the one word answer Monday while in a meeting with Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas. Obama Treasury Sec. Tim Geithner was confirmed last week despite revelations he failed to pay employer taxes in IRS filings between 2001 and 2004."

As Homer would say, "doh" number 2

So, first he shouldn't have ever been put forward for nomination by Barry, and then once he was and the "mistake" was uncovered.....he gets "absolute" support.

Steeeee-rike two......

There are many policies that I desire to see fail for freedom's sake. But I do wish him success in being an honorable man. But, reality is that he is apart of that Chicago machine.

My faith in our leadership has taken many blows over the years. For example I value alot of Newt's ideology. I know in my heart he is right on many issues. Yet I can no longer support him and I view him about the way I do Dick Morris and many others.

Unfortunately, finding a person of money (we have never had a poor one) and experience to be a Cabinet Secretary is extremely hard to find who hasn't cheated on taxes or used illegal labor!

There are simply scores of millions of them. Taxes are seen by many if not most people as something to get away from paying or to claim false deductions. They are hated since they are deducted and not spent!
That is why a 30-40% sales tax is wanted by some, one only loses it one buy at a time, and then there is the stolen black market w/o sales taxes!

I suspect Daschle had an accountant, and Geithner responded to all the questions TurboTax had asked of him.

When's the last time you remitted the Georgia use tax you owed on a so-called sales-tax-free internet purchase, Fred? (Don't lie to me!)
