NAACP says race ‘may’ be a factor in church shootingsFri, 01/30/2009 - 3:39pm
By: John Munford
In a statement issued earlier this week, the Fayette County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is urging “swift” apprehension of the person or persons who fired gunshots into two unoccupied churches in Fayette County last week. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incidents which occurred at two of Fayette County’s oldest historically black churches: Bethlehem Baptist Church in Peachtree City and Flat Rock AME Church near the western border of Fayetteville. The NAACP notes that the incidents “could potentially have racial overtones and are reminiscent of the civil rights era when churches were often targeted.” “Overall, the consensus opinion is while it is extremely unfortunate that someone has taken their anger and frustration out on these historic houses of worship, the African American community is resolute and steadfastly refuses to give in to fear,” the statement said. “Our prayers go out to these congregations and to those ungodly perpetrators who are in dire need of the salvation from God almighty who awaits the confession of their sins. The unprecedented reprehensible acts of domestic terrorism will not be taken lightly by the good people of Fayette County and we appreciate the support from everyone who believes in peace and progress. The group is urging the community to stay calm. “We also urge local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to aggressively investigate these incidents and we anxiously await the swift apprehension and prosecution of the persons responsible for these spiteful horrific acts of domestic terrorism.” The NAACP was established in 1909 by a bi-racial group of citizens who were appalled at the afflictions suffered by citizens of color. The Fayette County NAACP meets at the Flat Rock AME Church which is located at between Fayetteville and Peachtree City just off Highway 54 at 148 Old Chapel Lane. All current NAACP members are asked to please attend the very important general membership meetings on February 14, 2009 at 4 pm. Call 770-460-9934 or visit fcnaacp.org for more information.
