The money is NOT state money. If the states had wanted to do this work, they should have borrowed or taxed it and done it!
They never would!!!

As to who to hire to work these jobs, the old CCC camps in Roosevelt's time who built many roads and dams and other timbering work, etc., work did a fine job, and they were mostly 15-18 years of age.

Of course they had supervisors and engineers who also needed jobs.

It can be done!

But not by giving the money to people like Sonny and many other governors and legislatures who haven't done and won't do it.

If you don't want 15-20 years of misery, better do this quick and dirty thing now.
Greed failed.

Right when Reich mentioned minorities and women. Who would have thought that a conservative source would edit out the crucial words that showed "inclusion" of minorities and women; not EXCLUSION of white men?

An excerpt from Sniffle's Media Matters link:

" while addressing concerns from women's advocacy groups and others about the composition of the proposed stimulus, Reich said then and has repeatedly stated that he favors a stimulus plan that "includ[es] women and minorities, and the long-term unemployed" in addition to skilled professionals and white male construction workers, not one that is limited to women and minorities.

During the January 22 edition of Fox News' America's Newsroom, Fox News contributor and syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin claimed that Reich proposed that "the stimulus funds should not go to white male contractors." During the January 22 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Rush Limbaugh claimed that Reich "doesn't want it to go to white construction workers," while on his January 23 show, he stated: "And by the way, we're dedicating today's program to white construction workers -- the white construction workers that we learned yesterday Robert B. Reich said he doesn't want to receive any of the bailout money to hire infrastructure workers." And on the January 22 edition of Fox News' Hannity, host Sean Hannity claimed that Reich "expressed concern that the current [stimulus] package is, well, too inclusive." After airing a clip of Reich's testimony, Hannity stated: "Now here I thought the package was intended for everybody. So aren't pink slips color blind?"

Wow! Who would have thought that
Hannity,

Malkin,

and Limbaugh

were

LIARS?

Please tell me he didn't mean it. Please tell me this so called great intellect made a poor choice of words. Please show me were I can find the full text of his testimony.

Finally, at about 2:03 of TinCan's video I got a kick out of what Congressman Rangel said:

We got to put money where the hemorrhage is at...

Is this guy serious or is this the Democratic mindset.

What a mis-statement! Americans are hurting, middle class, poor, etc. (The middle class today are the 'working poor'.) I cringe that our 'government' is dealing on this level - but I also cringe that our corporate heads have used the money from the bailout unwisely (better jets, fancier offices, etc.) Is Reich suggesting that somewhere he heard that this money was going to a dispproportionate number of white males? Was he trying to nip that rumor in the bud? I've been accused of being a 'closet racist' - maybe there are some in Washington that are 'coming out of the closet'. When are we going to stop being in denial - and admit that the history of America has had a racist/sexist 'tinge' to it for a long time - and we're now in the midst of change - and change isn't easy.

Here we go:

"We don't want highly skilled workers if they are white"

What the f....???

How would this go over if a white president and a republican controlled congress had said this: we don't want any highly skilled professionals if they are black or otherwise differently special minorities.??

Well don't all start typing at once....what do you think would happen??

If any white president or a republican controlled congress tried to say something like this they would have been flogged in the liberal, thumbsucking, bedwetting, media.

This is astoundingly RACIST!!

One: they are actively saying they will not hire whites, even if they are the most qualified.

Two: they are saying that they doubt most minorities are capable of being qualified for a job that requires highly skilled professionals. So they have to skew the whole hiring process, because that is the only way they could get hired.

OUTRAGEOUS!!

"We don't want highly skilled workers if they are white"

That is not what the man said. In the past - white, male, skilled workers have always had the advantage in the job market in this country. What he meant is that all Americans who need work should have an opportunity with this stimulus package. . .not just highly skilled white males. This isn't 'racism' - it's change.

Look here.. he did say it.. Mean it.. I don't know.. but he did say it.. in America the most Capable should get the job.. no matter the race. But then again I am beginning to not recognize this country.. Must be a differnet co-parallel dimension I have slipped into.. oh well time to go nitie night..

I think it is pretty clear.

Submitted by skyspy on Thu, 01/29/2009 - 12:09am.

Then watch the news see how much it gets turned around or how much gets deleted. They have yet to show the part of "we will hire highly skilled workers unless they are white" It was shown clearly on C-span, but the major networks are highly allergic to reporting the news. Even though anyone can watch it for free.

"not simply go to white males or skilled construction workers" - not verbatim, but what I heard. Come on guys - you know that the construction unions don't have a plethora of minority American workers. Many are illegal. (That's another issue) Nighty night. LOL.

Submitted by Nitpickers on Wed, 01/28/2009 - 5:49pm.

MOST of them will be white, skilled workers!!
What Reich wanted in his talk was SOME of the others to be hired.
They would not be if the feds didn't demand it for our tax money.
The money doesn't belong to Georgia but to all of the USA.

We have a black president. We have proof that everyone can make it here if they try.

News flash, hard work never killed anyone. No more free lunch because of the color of your skin.

As a white person and LEGAL citizen of the U.S.A I have been harmed by the racist comments of our democratic leaders. Watching that c-span clip has irreparably damaged my self-esteem. I doubt I will be able to sleep well tonight, because of the damaging racist remarks. If I lose sleep I will be forced to call in sick for an undetermined amount of time. The loss of wages will have to be reimbursed with interest. The cost to my health will have to be evaluated and compensated for.

This has made me fell unwelcome in my own country. Without reparations I doubt that I could ever feel safe or whole here again.

Actually, Correta Scott King said this about a year before her death. There was an interview with her a few years ago in the AJC where she, more or less, believed that the Black community had lost it's way as far as equallity goes. Martin Luther King believed that ALL men should be judged on the content of their character, and not the color of their skin. I'm all for that. But the victim mentallity of "the MAN is keeping us down" is circling the drain. No more excuses, especially when you have a black, excuse me, a half and half president.

There you go again with your blanket statement about minorities in this country. I, nor my father, uncles, cousins - got a 'free lunch' in this country because of the color of our skin!! We EARNED our degrees, above middle class salaries, and community respect!! . . . in spite of legal blocks put in our way until recent times. The reason Obama is historic in 2009 - is because many Americans and others in the world thought this country would never get over giving the 'white' guy an upper hand. Stop your personal whining. You still have the upper hand - and you know it! Don't fear the change - just be sure that you are qualified and prepared for whatever you chose to apply for - for there may be an American of a different hue that is selected because he is more qualified and better prepared.

Submitted by skyspy on Thu, 01/29/2009 - 12:22am.

Ever since affirmative action was instated there has been a free lunch in this country based on race.

I can tell from what you have written over the years, you have worked hard. I know that you love our country as much as I do.

I have not seen the most qualified get jobs. I have seen whining sniveling, I have seen people place racist, hatefilled notes in their own mailboxes( with security cameras watching, duh, it is a workplace ), I have seen people break their own car window on a security camera and cry "hatecrime" and then cry "racism". That is what my 18yrs in Atlanta have shown me.

This is a new day. Everyone, even a kid raised by his grandparents can reach the highest office in the land.

I'm sorry if this upsets you, but Reich needs to answer for what he said.

I don't have an issue with you. You have the same values I do. We both believe in hard work and we love our country.

I think the jobs should go to the most qualified and that questions of race or age should be against federal law for any job application. Someones age or race has nothing to do with their education or their abilities.

Have a good night David's mom, I think we are on the same side. I think we both love this country. I think if people like us in every community work together, we the people will save this country. NOT POLITICIANS. Because their isn't an honest one in the bunch.!!!

To have government mandate to private business that they must hire based on race and gender is despicable.

Reich is calling for quotas which by their very nature are discriminatory.
