PTC’s ‘Baby Kroger’ to close March 7

Company declines comment on future of shopping center anchor

The Kroger Company has announced it will close its smallest store in Peachtree City on Saturday March 7.

The “baby Kroger,” as it has affectionately known, had experienced declining sales “over an extended period of time,” said Glynn Jenkins, director of communications and public relations for Kroger.

All of the store’s employees will be considered for relocation to other Kroger stores and no layoffs are expected, Jenkins said.

The store is located at the intersection of Ga. Highway 54 and Peachtree Parkway in the former location of the Big Star, which was later operated by Harris Teeter before it was purchased by Kroger several years ago.

Jenkins said the decision to close the store came after extensive and careful research into the matter.

Jenkins declined to comment on the company’s future plans for the location, which is the anchor of the Peachtree Crossing shopping center. Last year the company announced plans to close the store and sub-let the site to the Goodwill corporation. That move was opposed by both fellow tenants of the Peachtree Crossing shopping center and by neighbors who enjoyed shopping there and didn’t want to see it leave.

Ultimately the company relented and decided to leave the store up and running. Until now.

The store closing “will help Kroger operate more efficiently,” Jenkins said.

The other two Krogers in Peachtree City have extended offerings in their meat and seafood departments as well as fuel centers and other offerings, Jenkins said.

The “baby Kroger” is significantly smaller than the company’s typical footprint and thus could not host a full complement of items and services typically offered by Kroger’s larger store formats.

The Kedron Kroger, for example, also features a Starbucks coffee and bistro in addition to a Bank of America branch, Jenkins said.

The company expects to continue to serve Peachtree City residents at both the Kedron and Braelinn locations, Jenkins said.

I would like to use the building as a bar. We could drive our golf carts inside and drink beer. Drunkan golf cart driving is a Peachtree City tradition.

About time, heck I have a son who works there and its past time that store close its doors. Most of the time its just one big gathering place for the PTC kids and former teens who worked there in the parking lot. So many times we've visitied the store only to find the teens playing around and the so called evening managers doing little but sitting in the customer service area talking on the phone.

Some of the management is first class, a few of them are more interested in bad mouthing others to anyone that would listen, that included customers in the check out lines. Where else could you go and see a teenager channeling Elvis with his shirt collar up, struting around like he is something special.

Close it,tomorrow would be better.

Another empty storefront! Doesn't seem to be a problem just over the county border. Peachtree City does need to face up to the fact that the Newnan shopping centers have gotten better. It might be interesting to try to figure out why they've got a really nice-looking shopping center with interesting stores, and we've got storefronts for lease throughout the city, and empty industrial sites all up and down Dividend.

We already have 3 grocery stores plus Walmart and Target and possibly another Publix. Why does everyone want another grocery store to replace Baby Kroger? Be creative people. How about a bowling alley? Or, maybe Dar Thompson could open his hockey arena there. How about another chucrch? You can never have enough of those. I like the porn shop idea but coweta already has one. A strip club would be nice.

For all of you who want a Whole Foods there, stop dreaming. Get ready for a Good Will store or something. With this economy you can't expect much more.

No way they let a competitor of any kind come into that space. Good economy or bad..they won't let it happen.

Submitted by fluffybear on Wed, 01/28/2009 - 8:53am.

Let's not say "It won't happen". Depending on the wording in the lease, Kroger may be obligated to make every effort to fill the space with another food store. I have seen this with a great number of shopping centers. Typically the replacement is never a major chain or a viable threat to the outgoing store.
Some viable options might be

A 99 cent store - before I get jumped on for this one. I can name you at least 2 dozen cities which are similar in demographics to what PTC is or use to be that they thrive in.

A Food Depot - A discount grocery store by any other name. These stores typically sell items which did well in the traditional store or can no longer be sold in one (ie. Wheaties Box with picture 2008 World Series Champions comes off the shelf in favor of 2009 Super Bowl champions)

Aldi - Anyone who has been to one knows this in no way is any serious competition.

Submitted by ptcmom678 on Fri, 01/30/2009 - 5:27am.

However, I would love it if an Aldi came there. Great prices, best place for German beer and chocolates since World Market shut down. Actually it's gotten so it HAS primarily replaced Kroger as my main grocery store.

Submitted by Spyglass on Wed, 01/28/2009 - 12:00pm.

The owners of Aldi and Trader Joes are brothers.

And you're right, the lease wording will have something to do with the tenant....an anchor helps the other smaller tenants in the center greatly.

Remember the "Harry's in a Hurry" in The Avenues in what is now a book store? We frequented it and thought it was doing well, but when Whole Foods bought Harry's Farmer's Market, they decided to close it.

CC is one of the reasons we have "wild" kids nowadays. Parents can go and chat while the kids learn vandalism among other things.

These same kids can wreck another's house and the parents do not care when they visit! Amazing.
Never have seen such laziness and ignoring of one's children!

They are not taught table manners nor how and what to eat---so they eat sweets just before meals often!

This also is to keep them busy and not require supervision
and training.
Absentee Fathers and working Mothers cause much of this. They don't want to upset the kids, what little time they dedicate to them!

Submitted by fluffybear on Wed, 01/28/2009 - 9:13am.

Nitpicker, From reading your post would I be correct in assuming that you are some dried old prune who sits on his balcony and screams at the children playing below because they are disturbing you sitting there thinking about how pathetic your life is?
My daughter had a birthday party over this past weekend and I was amazed how well mannered most of those children were. Yes, they were loud but at their age, I would be very concerned if they sat there perfectly quiet and were not allowed to enjoy themselves. Children go to places like Chuck E Cheese to play and have a good time just as someone such yourself likes to go to Kroger and drink their coffee & eat pastries and talk with your friends about how life stinks and how much it was better in your days.
My children have friends over all the time and neither my wife or I have yet have to repair anything or get loud because they were doing things they shouldn't be.
Lastly, just because you were raised not have manners and eat properly or this is how you chose to raise your children does not mean everyone else is this way.

Submitted by ptcmom678 on Fri, 01/30/2009 - 5:38am.

I've got well-mannered kids, and my husband and I have long since agreed that we will never host a Chuck E. Cheese party, and don't really like going there. Why? It IS noisy, and I think that's got as much to do with the way the building's set up. There also isn't that much supervision. It gets nuts trying to find ten little bodies going every which way when you're supervising a party there.
The jumping places have as many kids, and the noise level isn't as great. Their parties are also better-managed and supervised. You may not agree with people, but well-mannered people don't need to make personal attacks to get their point across. Attack the words, not the person!!

Submitted by fluffybear on Fri, 01/30/2009 - 8:29am.

I won't argue with you that Chuck E. Cheese is not a great place for adults nor would I ever host a party there (for the same reasons). My child has not been to a "jumping" party yet but we have done a few spirit nights there. The big difference I see is parties at Chuck E. Cheese are done during normal business hours and it can get hectic rather quickly. Place like Jump 2 it have set party times during non business hours which makes things easier to control. I also noticed that during spirit nights parents were required to stay with their children and that also can make a huge difference on behavior.

Submitted by Nitpickers on Wed, 01/28/2009 - 9:58am.

It is hard to raise kids with the above talents. I know.

There is a vast difference in kids playing and kids hurting and destroying, and with NO table manners!
Many nowadays have rarely eaten a meal at the table because they don't know how without disturbing everybody there!

If you haven't seen it then you aren't looking!

If raised that way they continue into adulthood with ill-tempered and ignorant manners! It is your duty to do this.

Is this another place to let them run wild while you yap?

Submitted by fluffybear on Wed, 01/28/2009 - 9:20am.

Yes, another place that allows children to run free and enjoy themselves. Some parents do use the time to socialize just as I am sure parents did when they took you to the park when you were a child.
Try and think back for a moment what it was like when you were a child! Chances are you were left to play outside by yourself or at a friends house or the park without any adult supervision. What rotten parents you must have had to allow you to go outside and roam the streets on your own!

Submitted by ptcmom678 on Tue, 01/27/2009 - 6:14pm.

Fairly decent supervision, but I have a great time sliding with mine. You have to supervise your own kids at the jumping places - there's too many there to be able to depend on the teen attendants. Jumping Jelly Bean's pretty good, but they do need to refill their Jelly Belly containers a little more often;)

I think that Kroger should take both baby Kroger and its parents ( Kedron and Braelin ) and both leave room for a REAL GROCERY STORE
like WHOLE FOODS or even TRADER JOE'S.

Makes you wonder what Kroger's plans are since they won't reveal them. Guess the memory of what happened last time is too fresh. Would love a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Kroger probably wouldn't want competition from another grocery. They sure went all out with Kedron Kroger---more wine than most wine shops carry. Didn't know there were that may wine drinkers among us.

I remember Hudson's very fondly--very nice people.

Guess we will have to wait and see.

A thrift store is still better than a big empty building. And if people want to tear the building down and make a park I say go for it as long as PTC pays kroger for the building.

I spoke with the folks at Whole Foods corporate office and they concluded about a year ago that we had the wrong demographic in PTC, did not pull from enough zip codes and the retail market trend in PTC was headed down...not up. I received basically the same news from Trader Joes (although they were much more upbeat about it). Chipotle told me the same thing last winter when I looked at opening a franchise here in PTC. I guess the glory days of retail in PTC are over...bring on the Big Lots.

That's the only issue. It's a catch 22...I enjoy the low density of Fayette County in general, but we can't bitch and moan when certain stores won't even consider the area.

Submitted by thecueman on Fri, 01/30/2009 - 11:12am.

This town was desiged on the village concept. Everyone should have their local grocery store.
This one turned out to be a real piece of work. I can think of very few grocery stores with such bad selection and poor quality. The back row used to be an entire run of floor coolers and freezers. Now it's the place to find piles of toys and BBQ grills. I'm sorry sir we don't carry flat leaf parsley. We don't have the room. By the way you haven't bought you weekly lawn table set yet. It would help our density problem, you see.
I don't disagree on other chains feeling we don't fit their stats. I doubt we ever did. We are rather unique. However Kroger has failed us with a lousy rendition of a store. The landlord will fail us if he allows the food concept to be replaced by something different. The city will have failed us for allowing such a breach in our village concept.

You nailed it Spyglass. You can't have it both ways.
Density means enough people shop to support a store.
Less density means fewer people to support the same store.
Fewer people means less in store revenue and less in taxes.

So what do we do?

Submitted by skyspy on Tue, 01/27/2009 - 7:11pm.

Don't confuse me with that guy.

We could have had a enough room for whole foods, but instead we have acres of empty retail space and no trees. People don't pay high dollar to live amongst empty ugly strip malls.

Submitted by Bonkers on Tue, 01/27/2009 - 6:44am.

Teeter tried it with fancy foods here---total failure.
Way too expensive and not nearly enough fools and their money!
Even those with the money only bought what Kroger didn't have!!!

I think we should open a Bloomingdales, or a Richs, (bring en back) or a Macy's, or a Cadillac Dealership--now that is prestige!

Submitted by mthom5436 on Fri, 01/30/2009 - 11:35am.

Through out this post many people have argued against the possible success of Trade Joes or Whole foods due to the fact that Harry's and Teeter's have both failed before. I have never been to a whole foods but I have been to a Trader Joe's. Trader Joe's is a much different concept than Harry’s. It is almost specifically designed for people cooking for two. I think that concept would be great in PTC for retired people with no kids and young people like my fiancée and I with no kids. I find that it’s incredibly difficult to cook for two at Kroger and Publix. Every thing is portioned for 4 or more. Half the time when we cook it works out that it would have been cheaper to go out.

Submitted by PTC50 on Fri, 01/30/2009 - 1:01pm.

Trader Joe's is not interested in coming to PTC. I did hear they have looked at Newnan. As for smaller portions. The meat dept will cut them for you.

Greenspace with trees and wooded lots are what many people want. It is the only reason I moved here.

Let's just bulldoze the empty shops, and plant trees. We could make it festive. Have a citizen planting day. Working together we could get our city back.

Yes it really wasn't the place to comment about the PCFD. Instead of driving the $500,000 fire truck a quarter of a mile, they will have to drive it up to Kedron or Braelinn to sort out dinner for the boys.

The changes that you will have to save that man from a fire are about the same chances that Obama will become a republican although I applaud your efforts.

I would welcome a starship and other novelty stores that support a younger demographic of people. Unless PTC lets up on there laws for retailers you will never get the choice stores and everything that goes along with it. You want a trader joes you have bring in younger home buyers. The only way to do that is to have things for younger "DINKS" to do. Dinks stands for "double income no kids". Pretty soon you will have no one wanting to move here and there go all the tax dollars.

Nightlife is practically non-existent, totally non-existent for teens, the only stores geared towards younger people are some of the clothing stores at The Avenue. Although Gypsy Warehouse, while not a novelty store, is a pretty decent mix of merchandise for younger people and older too. It's next to Plumyumi next to The Avenue. I think PTC is starting to lose the kids - they grow up here, go away to school, and never return.
