*** Update 1:48 p.m. Booth, Oak Grove, Huddleston and Braelinn had been on lockdown but were taken off that status just before 2 p.m.

A male, thought to be in his early 30s, has been shot this morning at a condominium at 1024 Ridgefield Drive in Peachtree City. The victim was flown from the scene by a medical helicopter.

The suspect in the shooting, a white male in a black ski mask, was seen running east on the cart path system, police said. He is tall, with a stocky build, and was last seen wearing a camo jacket, khaki pants and brownish work boots.

The sheriff's helicopter, Hawk 1, and tracking dogs are in the area trying to locate the suspect.

Three young people, who were either in the condo or in the area and were witnesses to the crime, are being questioned by police.

The scene of the shooting is just off Peachtree Parkway South and just to the north of its intersection with Crosstown Road.

A teacher said they lock the classroom doors during a lockdown. Does that mean the kids stay in the same room all day and skip other classes during a lockdown?

Does anyone have any additional information? It would be comforting to know that they have arrested a suspect or if they believe he is no longer in the area.

I always try and stay away from crime scenes. They are always looking for someone as a person of interest.
Makes it look as if they immediately caught someone.

Constitution doesn't mention "person of interest!"
Paris Hilton is a person of interest!

...the news hasn't said too much. The helicopters were up again around 6:30 or so. The shooter is still at large.

Those in the area of where he was thought to be got an automated phone call. So if you have ever called 911 to ask what was going on and were told you would be notified if you needed to be concerned that is exactly what they meant.

There have been multiple agencies working together on this and I just want to say thanks to all of them.

I live very near there---got no call!
Who would call 911 to see what was going on? That is not what it is for, is it?

Who are "multiple agencies?" You must get paid by one of them!

Submitted by NeedtoKnow on Fri, 01/23/2009 - 8:28am.

911 gets called for all sorts of crazy stuff:

Your area is having a fuel shortage and you want to know where you can get gas? Call 911! From home even!

Cat stuck in a tree? Call 911!

Get flipped off by a driver that passes you (legally) because you were driving too slow while talking on your cell phone (and you admit that)? Call 911!

Want to know what time it is in Spain? Call 911!

See a bad car accident and see officers already there? Call 911 to make sure they are okay!

You're right, that's not what it is for. I have a friend who used to work for 911 and according to him, most of us would be surprised what people call 911 for.

As for working for one of the "multiple agencies"... no, but I do appreciate them.

Well I know it will be a long night for my sonn who is now terrified from what happened at school today . I will just stay up all night and wait for the Citizen paper to arrive tomorrow with some info . So are you saying there is a gunman on our cart paths ?

Submitted by Bonkers on Fri, 01/23/2009 - 5:57am.

What on earth did the schools do except lock the doors? Did the teachers and admin types cry and scream? Did they tell small kids a boogie man with a gun was after them? What?

There are always gunmen on our cart paths! One third of the dudes in Fayette carry a concealed! Now they aren't quick-draw artists nor very accurate but they feel powerful with them.

...that we have folks who go to the trouble to get a carry permit and then actually have a weapon on them. Not to be paranoid, but several times have legal packing people thwarted a bad guy around here in "Pleasantville". As a former military officer I wish we had more training for people before we let them carry a loaded weapon. But, then I wish once we determined someone was both trustworthy and capable that they could take that weapon with them wherever/whenever. I for one would be happy to have to hit a target and show that I understand both the handling and the law associated with a weapon. Bad guys would think twice if they thought they would possibly get shot by anyone they threaten. Our police department is awesome. But, they can't be everywhere. Exercise your right to keep and bear arms. It's an easy process. Then go to a gun range and tell them you would like to be trained... They will help.

Thanx for your encouraging words . The school told the children enough to scare them . Pretty much like you said boogie man with a gun was after somebody . I don't ever remember the word gun ever mentioned when I was in elementary school , especially by the teachers and staff . They must not have caught him , cops are across the street right now in backyards with flashlights ,

They did? I asked my daughter about all the excitement and her reply, "What excitement?". She said that they just went about their normal day and the reason they were not let outside was because of the weather.
FYI, This is the same story I got from no less then 3 other kids in our sub-division & not a single one had any idea something was up.

Update - Sat, 10:00am - My daughter still has no idea anything happened on Thursday. In speaking with other parents yesterday, my kid is still not alone in this.
Terminalpreppy, I feel for you that your child may have been traumatized. I am thinking your child must not have been in the classroom at time and overheard teachers speaking or a teacher was forced to discuss it with students as one student learned what was going on and began to tell others.

I wish I had more info for you. I'm hoping for an update on the 10:00 news on Fox (though they didn't have all the info right earlier, so don't believe everything you hear on any of the channels).

How they got these school children worked by saying things like ; gunman, shooting ,helicopters searching . Only to be left in the dark and doing damage control on a young mind .

I agree there needs to be more tv coverage when incidents like this are taking place. I really enjoy the PTC area however I have noticed more undesirable residents in the past few months. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with Clayton County Schools. Even though I like the area more patrols should be implemented. It can be scary for those who live alone.

Your guessing this has a lot to do with Clayton County Schools ?
Because you've seen more undesirables in the past few months.

You make this statement because police are looking for a white man ?
or because he was wearing a black ski mask ?

we all know that every crime that happens in Georgia is committed by a Clayton County alum. hahaha

I am a teacher and I was stuck in a locked room with the kids today during the lockdown. I knew as much as the kids did, which is to say I knew nothing at all. So, I decided to see what I could find out while we were stuck in the room eating lunch. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover information on what was happening via your website. Thanks for posting things so quickly and on such short notice. It put my mind at ease (which I think the kids could sense, so it put them as ease as well) to at least know what was happening.

Thanks!

Got to go with you, Fluffy, where are the news alerts? I can't get an answer on this - is the person in custody? I was assuming that that was the reason the lockdown was lifted...?

Submitted by tiger2mc on Thu, 01/22/2009 - 2:20pm.

ALL schools are now off lockdown. They think they know who did it. Thank God for the awesome/swift response of our law enforcement. I'm on my way to get my baby girl and hold her tight in my arms the rest of the day. God Bless...

Thinking about the area where this incident happened, this scuz bucket could be hiding just about anywhere. A lot of property is not fenced and could very easily be hiding in a out-building or under a porch.
Until this guy is caught, THINK!!

There are more city trucks and vans working than ever seen before-what a great use of city employees (don't get me started on what would happen with outsourced help)...recreation, water & sewer, landscape, public utilities...unmarked sheriff cars around, TV crews at the entrance to Ridgefield..a camera man setting up outside Oak Grove school.
Let's hope this all comes to nothing....thank you to PTC police and Fayette County sheriff depts.

Lock down is over now at Booth

Haven't heard the helicopters for a while. There were four of them earlier and were flying over my neighborhood street by street according to my daughter. I could see and hear them from here, too.

MyFoxAtlanta says:

thank goodness the kids are safe; now time for us to start our deep breathing. For any other parents, this does mean bus disruption til lockdown's lifted, and no check-outs allowed. The panic button hit too quickly for all the school names to register before, Fox

Has this issue been resolved?

It does not appear any of the stations are covering this.

just the usual soaps and Tyra - am scanning channels here too. Will post if I hear anything.

One thing I really miss about Los Angeles is the "Breaking News Coverage". An event such as this would prompt constant news coverage by no less then 8 different stations.
