The Evangelical Climate Initiative

Father David Epps's picture

Several evangelical heavyweights have joined together in something called the Evangelical Climate Initiative (ECI). The Initiative, anchored by over 250 “senior evangelical leaders,” including Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, Gordon MacDonald, Jack Hayford, and a gaggle of Christian college presidents.

I, too, received an invitation to join ECI. I have declined to do so even though I believe that we should care for the place we live and work to keep pollution to a minimum. I personally do “give a hoot and don’t pollute.”

The brochure of the organization is “Climate Change: An Evangelical Call to Action” and lists four claims made by ECI:
Claim 1 – “Human induced climate change is real.”

Well, as far as being a detriment to global well-being, that is up for debate. There are thousands of scientists who believe that “global warming” is a bogus issue. Climate change is one thing — human-induced global warming is another.

According to one source, the volcanic eruption of Mt. Saint Helen’s spewed more contaminants into the atmosphere than the entire range of human technological endeavors since the Industrial Revolution.
A television news report revealed that there has been “no warming of the planet in the last 10 years and the past six years have actually recorded a global cooling.” The past year was declared a “bad year for global warmers” by one source.

Claim 2 – “The consequences of climate change will be significant and will hit the poor the hardest.”

What consequences, other than theoretical? As far as the poor being impacted, the sad truth is that the poor are always the most adversely impacted.

There is no doubt that the poor are hit hardest by war in Iraq and Gaza. Where is the “Evangelical War Initiative?”

In this current recession, the poor are impacted terribly. Where is the “Evangelical Recession Initiative?”
The poor are hit the hardest by drug use and teen pregnancy. Where are the Evangelical Initiatives for these and a hundred other issues?

Claim 3 – “Christian moral convictions demand our response to the climate change problem.”

And just where is that in scripture? Did Jesus say, “Go into all the world and proclaim the need for action in the face of alleged global human-induced climate change?”

Did he say, “You shall receive power to proclaim the ‘carbon footprint’ agenda first in Jerusalem, then in Judea, and then to the uttermost parts of the earth?” I didn’t think so.

Where, anywhere in the ministry and teaching of the apostles, do we find justification for such a thing?

Claim 4 – “The need to act now is urgent ...” Really?

What follows in the ECI brochure is a list of talking points that can be found in any liberal environmentalists’ agenda. ECI claims that “deadly impacts are being experienced now.” We must, ECI says, “pass national legislation requiring sufficient reductions in carbon dioxide emissions through cost-effective, market-based mechanisms.”

Does anyone remember “Y2K”? Supposedly, at the turn of the century, the world was going to be thrown into techno-catastrophe by a glitch in the global computer/technological network, and people were running around all over the civilized world shouting that the sky was falling.
It was all a myth, yet hundreds of millions of dollars were spent to “do something” or else we were going to be thrown back into the dark ages. It was bad science.

In the 1700s, 10 Russian Orthodox priests and monks journeyed to the unexplored territory of Alaska to proclaim the Gospel of Christ, to baptize, and to teach the new converts. In an eight-month period of time, over 7,750 native Alaskans embraced Christianity and their lives and communities were changed. With the exception of one priest, all died in the endeavor which, over 200 years later, still influences Alaska.

If one wishes to change a culture, there must be a spiritual change in the human heart. That is the “Evangelical Initiative.”

That is the mission of the Church — not to squander its credibility and influence on the latest issue of the moment, whatever that issue may be.

So if the arctic ice cap is made up of frozen sea water, and it all melts, will the seas really rise. Try this little experiment:
1. Get a bowl of water.
2. Put some ice cubes in the water.
3. Wait patiently for the ice cube to melt. Most liberal climate freaks will have this kind of time on their hands.
4. Measure the change in the level of the water after the ice melts.
5. Re-verify that there was no change.
6. Start kicking yourself because you bought into all this nonsense in the first place.

I've heard this argument over and over. The point is true but totally irrelevant and only brought up to obfuscate the issue. There is no scenario in which the arctic ice melts whereby the Greenland ice cap does not also melt. The melting of the Greenland ice cap would raise sea levels approximately 9-12 feet.

Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" explains this false experiment. I can loan the documentary to anyone interested. Fill the glass of water to the brim, then float a few ice cubes on top. When they melt ... you will need a towel.

Recently, I was speaking with a friend of mine who owns Turnipseed nursery in Fayetteville. Two years ago I planted creeping fig to grow up the brick on the outside of my fireplace. Two seasons later it has grown to the top of my chimney and down into the chimney causing cracks in the mortar. My friend chuckled and told me that when he started his business long ago, fig would not survive our winter and was treated as an annual. Many of my other plants have been reacting in the same manner. Just goes to show how different the climate has become. Seen any palm trees lately? I have.

BTW: I like Reisling....I just love the sweetness. I am a novice wine drinker and have only recently graduated from blush to white. I find that I like the oak flavor in chardonnay. Reds are nice - I just haven't acquired that taste yet.

BTW, I am looking to sell off a portion of my wine cellar. I figured you being a fellow Oenophile, I would give you first crack at it.

Any burgundy or Pinot Noirs?

And yes, this is no ordinary WAG (wild a** guess) this is a bona fide SWAG (scientific wild a** guess)!

Now that's what I call science! Let's talk vitaculture.

I have mostly California cabs, with some blends sprinkled in here and there.
Raymond Generations (1) 750mL, (1) magnum
Hartwell 2004
Frontier Justice, Beckstoffer from the Bounty Hunter guys
(1) 1996 Chateau St Jean, Cinq Cepages
(1) 1997 " "
(1) 1999 " "
(2) Flora Springs Trilogy
A couple of Whitehall Lane cabs
Some higher end Beriger stuff (Howell Mtn, Brancroft Ranch)
I do have a 2004 Silver Oak, Napa Valley pre-release on it's way as well.

Plus a few others.

Let me know.

Go out and build huge factories and nuclear waste producers and pollute the air to your hearts content!

It is obvious that we stay sick a lot due to polluted air! Whether or not the ice caps are melting permanently.

What is it that make evangelicals be against any kind of control on pollution?

If we can give scores of trillions, before it is over, to crooked banks (money changers) to try and make our life and health better, why not helping to stop pollution?

The initiative that Epps is writing about is one that treats carbon dioxide as a pollutant. To speak against this is not to be for indescriminant polluting of other gases or solids. Why do the AGW people think that we are heading into a crisis when there are two previous periods of higher temperature - the Roman Warm period and the Medieval Warm period? Warm periods have been better historically for agriculture and for humanity than cool periods. Lets spend money on preventing heavy metals and NOX pollution before we worry about CO2.

Finally! Hey don't forget about the SOx emmisions from coal fired plants. If we could all agree that there is a difference in the global warming irrational thinking, and the reason to go green. It is a matter of panic vs. efficiency (respectively). If we monitor emmision for proper burn control we save ourselves money if fuel costs, regardless of type (coal, natural gas, even nuclear). Every 1% increase in oxygen used during the combustion phase, equates to a 10% increase in fuel associated costs.

I totally support your decision on this. I can't believe that many well-respected Evangelical Christian leaders are taking part in the liberal-based hullaballoo of a scare-tactic.

Father Epps claims "There are thousands of scientists who believe that “global warming” is a bogus issue." I doubt that. Hundreds maybe, thousands is a great exageration. Scientists by a margin of ten to one support the concept that human activities are probably making cyclical warming worse.
For official US news on global warming go to- http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/detect/ice-glacier.shtml. I know this will not be believed by the Flat Earth Society but the news must be told.

Using biblical quotations to reject sceintific evidence is dangerous- remember Galileo.

But Father Epps is often uninformed when he strays away from religion. I remember him being outraged that a friend of his had his handgun confiscated when the friend tried to go through customs in England. Father Epps was "unaware" that the right to bear arms, especialy handguns, is not a right in the UK.

The world has a tendency to go into periods of great cooling, with interspersed periods of warming. The current period is called the Holocene period. These warming periods, according to the geological records and ice core samples in places like Vostok Antartica, have historically lasted about 12,000 years or so. The Holocene period's 12,000 years are soon at an end. Take a look at the current tracking of Solar Cycle 24. The sun is in an increasing unusual period of quiescence. Are we heading for a maunder minimum or a milder Dalton minimum? We shall see eventually.

Oh now your in for it...
The Man made GW fanatics.. just hate it when you do that.. to think that the Sun might actually have anything to do with it.. is well absurd..
There used to be Glaciers covering North America.. and the Desert used to be under water... Cycles have been repeating since the beginning of time..
But Gore said it.. and I must bow to his superior knowledge.. So to hades with Logic..

Increased CO2 in the atmosphere is known to increase the speed of crop development, increase size of plants, and provide higher yields. If one can convince the aging hippies and liberals in the universities that this would greatly increase pot crops, would they change their loyalties and be onboard with AGW? Which loyalty is stronger-Gaia or Weed?

I have read dozens of scientific papers. I have talked with numerous scientists. I have studied. I have thought about it. I know I am correct. There is no run away climate change. The impact of humans on climate is not catastrophic. Our planet is not in peril. I am incensed by the incredible media glamour, the politically correct silliness and rude dismissal of counter arguments by the high priest of Global Warming.

As the temperature rises, polar ice cap melting, coastal flooding and super storm pattern all fail to occur as predicted everyone will come to realize we have been duped.

The sky is not falling. All natural cycles, drifts in climate are as much, if not more responsible for any climate changes underway. I strongly believe that the next 20 years are equally as likely to see a cooling trend as they are to see a warming trend."

That again is from John Coleman, the founder of the Weather Channel. But he's, I'm sure, in with big oil or he's an idiot or he's just naive or he is just trying to further someone else's agenda. Let's believe all the environmentalists. Yet there's no question that global warming -- that the globe has warmed in the last 100 years. The problem is the warmest date on record in the last 100 years was 1934. 1934 was the warmest year in America. 1934. If it's warming, shouldn't it have been warmer? They said it was 1998 but unfortunately that's not true. One of the gold standard from NASA for Al Gore got that one wrong, later had to correct it. Wouldn't it be getting warmer now? How's that possible?

Concenus.. I don't think so..
