I think it all looks pretty good.

If Kenny Loggins would just persuade his buddy, Jim Messina, to join him it would be fantastic.

If Peter Cetera brings a good band to back him up it would be a lot of fun to hear some classic Chicago stuff.

People are complaining about the Beach Boys? This is like griping about the colors on the U.S. flag. ("Stripes and stars: BOOORRRRING.")

I haven't even thought of Brewer and Shipley in years. "One toke over the line, sweet Jesus." The flip side to that 45 was "Oh, mommy, I ain't no commie" with the classic lines:

I like to wear my hair long
How can there be anything wrong?
Well, you already accused me twice
Of looking like Jesus Christ. Hallelujah.

But, heck, if Dollar would rather see me on stage, I have some old Kenny Loggins stuff nailed with guitar and vocals. People even used to say I look just like him. And everyone here knows I need the work.

Except for the Loggins stuff, I like your list! not familiar with Loggins.

But that isn't why I would come. I have appreciation for a man with two distinct talents.

I grew up with Fats, Richard,Haley, Page, Lombardo (saw in person), and of course, Swaggart's cousin---I saw him in a night club once.
Well, can't leave out Orbison and the Crickets!

That's a pretty fair set list you have there. I'd replace "Love Song" with "Pathways to Glory" (Loggins/Messina) and would love to sit in on bass guitar for "Midnight Rider" and "Whipping Post". "Old man" is good but "Four Strong Winds" is better for this demographic. I am also a karaoke black belt vocalist with "One" (had the female audience members in tears and I don't *think* it was tears of pain).

For an encore, I suggest you pull Skyspy on stage and duet on Meatloaf's "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights"....Hell, we'll do it as a closed-circuit pay-per-view charity event and balance PTC's budget. (Presuming Skyspy wears that red sequin halter-top thingee).

Yes, it does grow on you. Thanks for turning me on to it.

Each of our (grown) kids absolutely flipped over it, so I had to send bottles home with them from the original batch.

I could eat grilled salmon every day if everyone else didn't get sick of it. Ever used the sauce with salmon? It's wonderful. And then there's steak, pork, chicken, etc., etc.

Good deal on it by the case: $19.95 for 12. Have you bought it directly like that, going around back and ringing the bell and all?

The nice fringe benefit of the BBQ run is that it involves being in Savannah--one of my favorite places.

Just put a bit of the mustard sauce on the plate next to the steak and touch each bite into it. Oh, my!

Lee Anne Rimes at $50 grand? Come on now.

I don't know that other collection of old groups who have gathered for a shin-dig!

Try FATS Domino, or Elvis--if he can be persuaded to come out, is Glen Campbell sober yet?

I'll bet Muddle could put together a great band for 2 nights at much less than $50 K!

Personally, I like "Hog-tied Johnson and his jug thumpers," "Collard and Ham Eatin Mountain Boys," are rail gude ulso!

Jest food, shelter, and liquor, with about $100 will do it.

Here is some info which might help some of you younger readers:

The Spinners have been around since the 50's and has had 18 top 10 R&B hits including 7 number 1's ('I'll be around', 'Could it be I'm falling in love', 'One of a kind', 'Mighty love', 'Then came you', 'They just can't stop it (games people play)', 'The rubberband man'). The groups music has been featured in numerous TV shows & movies over the years. The group touring today features 2 of the original members but both of these men are in their 70's.

Kenny Loggins has been around since the 70's and had 5 top 10 hits including 'Footloose" which went to #1. His first big hit was a duet with Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac) titled, "Whenever I call you friend" but made a true name for himself during the 80's. Many people will remember his songs from movies such as "Caddyshack", "Footloose", & "Top Gun". Younger listeners will remember Loggins from "Welcome to Poohs Corner" where he wrote and sang the title theme.

Peter Cetera is best known as one of the lead singers of 'Chicago' before leaving the band in the mid-80's to pursue a solo career. Cetera had 7 top 10 hits including 5 #1's ('Glory of Love', 'The next time I fall in love', 'Afterall', 'Restless Heart', & 'One good woman') during his solo career. His music was featured in 'Karate Kid II" & "Three men and a baby". Cetera also wrote and sang the original title song to 'Baywatch'

Mark Volman (aka Flo) & Howard Kaylan (aka Eddie) are original members of the 60's group, "The Turtles". The Turtles had 5 top 10 hits including a #1 ('Happy Together'). An oddity in their original contract prevented from Volman and Kaylan using the name "The Turtles" or their own real names in show business after the group dissolved. In the mid-80's, Volman and Kaylan regained their rights but rather then reform the original group decided not to include other original members and thus we have "The Turtles with Flo & Eddie).

Chuck Negron is a founding member of Three Dog Night and remained with the group until they dissolved in the late 70's. Three Dog Night had 10 Top 10 hits including 3 #1's ('Joy to the world', 'Mama told me not to come' & 'Black and White'). There music has been featured in countless movies and TV shows. 4 of the original members are touring officially as "Three Dog Night".

Felix Cavaliere is a founding member of the group, "The Rascals". "The Rascals" had 6 top 10 hits including 3 number 1's ('Good Lovin'", "Groovin'", "People got to be free"). The 'original' Rascals' were inducted to the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

Badfinger has been around since the early 60's (originally named "The Iveys". The group changed their name to Badfinger in 1969. There 3 top 10 hits came in 1970 & 1971.

Hopefully this well help some of you understand who these people are and where they fit in the history of Rock N Roll.
Looking at the list of performers for 2009, While I like most of the names scheduled for 2009, without the original artists, it is just not the same. I might be persuaded to go and see Kenny Loggins and Peter Cetera & possibly The Beach Boys (depending on how many of the original group appears) but if they plan to charge anything like they did last year for single events, I'll stay home!

Hey, Fluffybear, no history needed for the "younger readers". Do you really think anyone under 40 cares about any of these acts?

I'm 57 years old and know the history so please allow me to add a little bit to your history lesson if I may.

Spinners...first formed in high school 1954. Do the math...assuming they were say 16 years old when formed they would be 78-79 years old when they hit the stage this summer! Fact is all of the members during their heyday are dead including lead singer Phillip Wynne who died 24 years ago. So basically what you have is a cover band.

Beach Boys....all dead except for Brian who hasn't toured with them in 40 years. Yeah, Mike Love sang most of the hits but again, a cover band.

Badfinger...a good band in the day but two of the main song writer members (Pete Ham and Tom Evans) hanged themselves over 25 years ago. So again a cover band.

Peter Cetera....while a member of one of the great bands of all time with Chicago also one of the worst purveryors of awful MOR music. Should have seen that coming with "If You See Me Now" a song he wrote when in Chicago. Last hit? "After All" with Cher. 'Nuff said!

Kenny Loggins...made some really memorable music with Jim Messina but quickly fell into the same MOR genre Cetera did. "I'm Allright" anyone??

Chuck Negron...lots of Three Dog Night music but the Fred had Three Dog Nght here so one more time - a cover band.

Leann Rimes? No comment necessary.

As for the Hippiefest, I don't know....gonna be kinda sad to see paunchy bald headed dudes still thinking they are groovy. And thats just the acts! God knows what the PTC citizenry will look like.

And by the way, Felix Cavaliere was just here at the Fred in September. The man can sign but man it was painful seeing him try to dance.

Point is I love the oldies as much as anyone but geez it's getting kinda old recycling these oldies groups through here. I just wish PTC would support some different genres of music at the Fred.

Submitted by fluffybear on Sun, 01/18/2009 - 2:37pm.

Since the comment was made, "I don't even know who these bands are". I thought it was a good idea to introduce who these bands were. No need to be rude.

BTW, Do the math yourself! 1954 to 2009 is 55 years + 16 is only 71.

FYI, Henry Farmbrough and Bobby Smith (original members) are still alive and touring. For the record, Bobby Smith was born in 1936 and by my calculations will be 73 while Henry Farmbrough will only be 71.
As for your opinion on Cetera and Loggins! I'll just remind you that it is only your opinion. I know of a lot people who would disagree with you!
While I will agree that this line-up leaves a lot to be desired and would not mind seeing them show different genres of music. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out who and why they have selected the line-up they did..

borntorun's picture
Submitted by borntorun on Sun, 01/18/2009 - 3:12pm.

Don't think I was being rude, Fluff. Just stating a fact that the "younger" readers probably have no interest in seeing this lineup.

LOL! I'm sorry to laugh but I don't know whether its a good thing or bad thing that two original backup singers over 70 years old will be singing at the Fred! Phillip Wynne was the voice of the Spinners during their heyday and without him it will be like when the Four Tops played at the Fred a couple of years ago without Levi Stubbs. Wasn't the Four Tops then and it won't be the Spinners this summer.

You are correct, the opinions expressed about Cetera and Loggins are mine and I'm sure there are people who look forward to seeing them. The question is are there 4,000 or so (two shows) people looking forward to them. I haven't heard anyone in 20 years even mention Peter Cetera's name much less express a desire to see him in concert. Time will tell with ticket sales.

And again, I think Loggins put out some great music when he was with Jim Messina. They played some shows the past couple of years and I woul love to see them at Fred. Saw them in 1972 in Athens and it was a great show.

As for who selected this lineup, I assume Nancy Price did the selecting and as for why this lineup was selected.....well..let's just say the Pink Flamingos will be happy I'm sure! Smiling

Submitted by fluffybear on Sun, 01/18/2009 - 4:07pm.

I will not dispute that "younger" readers probably would never go to see this line-up let alone watch one of the classic TV shows on RTN (2-2) but again my OP was only to enlighten them.

I have seen many of the great performers from that era perform within the last 5 years and you are right, it is not the same by any means. What makes it worse is when you can see one of them struggling to remember the lyrics.

Yes, this line-up was specifically set to please that Pink Flamingo crowd and we all know why, They have the money! Let us also not forget that this is probably the only performers 'The Fred' could get for what they want to pay! While I have not read their contracts, I can tell you that there are number of oldie performers who will work a room for nothing more then a cut of the take.

Maybe someone can answer this for me but is 'Fred' used for anything else throughout the year? If they depend strictly on this concert series to fund the place, THEY ARE IN TROUBLE!

borntorun's picture
Submitted by borntorun on Mon, 01/19/2009 - 9:00am.

Fluffy, I guess you are right....money talks! I think they could probably get some newer acts but if what you say is true, the Flamingo crowd would never approve.

As for The Fred being used for events other than the series, I think you can find a local theater group using it a couple of times as well as a military band concert. (I've never attended but I hear that it is quite good!)

Seems like I saw something in the paper a few weeks ago there is a sock hop planned for The Fred sometime during the July 4th holiday. And I think I saw where there was a $17.00 per person charge but that may be wrong. Not sure how that will go over but we'll see. I hope it succeeds!

I think there are plans for open mic nights, some movie presentatins and a couple of other minor events. Glad to see there are plans to at least try some new things.

It is a shame its not used more often but seems like there hasn't been much community support for events other than the concert series.

Carbonunit, they tried jazz at the Fred a few years back but it bombed big time. I guess it was too deep for The Pink Flamingos!

You would think PTC residents would appreciate listening to something a little more interesting than Peter Noone but doesnt seem to be the case. There doesn't seem to be a market here for people who appreciate true musical talent or history.

I remember folks griping and asking who the heck was Paul Rodgers when he played The Fred a couple of years ago. Unbelievable! Only one of the greatest singers in rock and roll with Bad Company and now fronting Queen selling out arenas around the world.

Thanks for the feedback regarding jazz at the Fred. I have not been here long enough to know those kinds of things. I saw Derek Trucks when he was 12 years old, the kid was something else. The Derek Trucks band is exactly the kind of show that the Fred needs, but I suppose we are stuck with the Dino-Tours this season.

Well, considering Brian Wilson quit touring with the Beach Boys in 1965 and the other 2 Wilson brothers are dead, I think we're doing well to get two of the three surviving original members. Mike Love did all the great vocals (except "good vibrations" and "God only knows")...he and Bruce Johnston have had the same "Beach Boys" lineup on tour for over 10 years now. They put on a very good show.

I thought I recalled Brian Wilson reuniting with the entire group (with the exception of Carl and Dennis) a few years ago & talking about touring again.

Submitted by jokerman on Sun, 01/18/2009 - 8:40am.

Brian rejoined the BB on tour in '76 for the "Brian is Back" tour. He toured with them sporadically in 81 and was with them for Live Aid in 85. They have talked recently about reuniting again for a tour, but it just wouldn't be the same without Carl and Dennis.

Brian put out a couple of critically acclaimed cds in the past few years (Smile in 2004 and That Lucky Old Sun last year) and has played shows supporting them but he hasn't been on the stage with the Beach Boys since '65 I believe. I saw a taping of the show for Smile and it was really good.

Indeed, I would prefer to see Brian at The Fred rather than the retread Beach Boys. While you may not get a lot of the Beach Boys oldies, you would get a better show and better music.

But then again, the poor Pink Flamingos just wouldn't get it. Smiling

Does any one have 'Old Habits Die Hard'? I think it's off the album 'Lost In Love'. I'd appreciate it greatly if someone would send it my way. Is that against the law? Puzzled

I thought I had that album. Dug all mine out the other day since I got me an turntable that coverts vinyls to digital. What was really neat was seeing all the artists and titles that I forgot I even had.

As far as the Fred goes..... no thanks. I agree with SpyGlass in his opinion that this a very weak line-up. I suppose in about 10 more years we'll see Mick Jagger at the Fred.

HEY! Pass some of that No-Doze over this way......

check your email...I just sent it via one of the snifflespawn's iphones. I'm assuming you wanted the Mick Jagger version?

I was after the AS version but am very grateful none-the-less.

No Jagger, but Ringo will appear next year! Alone with his drums. $50K!

I sure would like to see FATS, once again! And his band.

I'm not impressed at all. Over the years, the biggest crowds by far were the ROCK bands. This group is WEAK. Maybe I'll score some freebies from friends....this has to be the weakest lineup I've EVER seen for the Fred. I should have figured, it resembles the lineup I've seen for the last few years at Fayetteville, doh....
