Fayetteville police arrested a fifth-grade teacher at Cleveland Elementary School Tuesday on one count of child molestation, police said. Earl William “Bill” Howe is accused of molesting a female fifth grader between January and May 2007, police said. The alleged incident occurred after school hours while Howe was tutoring the student on school property, police said. According to police the student said Howe touched her inappropriately during a tutoring session. The student, who is now 13, was 11 at the time, police said. She left the school sometime in 2008 and didn’t report the incident initially, police said. The incident came to light after the student was seeing a counselor at her new school, and it was first reported to Fayetteville police in September, police said. Since then police have been working with counselors and other professionals as part of their investigation before making the arrest, police said. Lowe is no longer employed by the school system, said schools spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach. A substitute teacher who has a master's degree in education and a valid Georgia teacher's certificate is assuming Lowe's duties, she added. The criminal case does not involve any current students at the school and the victim no longer attends any Fayette schools, Berry-Dreisbach said. login to post comments |
