PTC Council eyes vote on Hwy. 54W. traffic signal

An application for a new traffic light on Ga. Highway 54 West will be considered again by the Peachtree City Council Thursday night.

The light would be located at the intersection with Line Creek Drive to serve a proposed shopping center. The proposed light has been denied twice by the Georgia Department of Transportation because of its proximity to existing lights at Planterra Way and MacDuff Parkway.

At issue is whether or not the City Council is required to file the application for the light. According to a development agreement between the city and Capital City Development, the city has agreed not to oppose CCD seeking the traffic light.

City Councilman Don Haddix says that does not require the city to file the application for the traffic light. But Mayor Harold Logsdon argues because the DOT wants the city to apply for the light, the city must do so to comply with the agreement.

Some opponents of the proposed traffic light say traffic is bad enough in the corridor, particularly during heavy commuting times.

Also the city’s agreement to sell a large part of Line Creek Drive to CCD hinges on the ultimate approval of a traffic light there.

CCD has agreed to purchase the right of way to the road for at least $500,000 and perhaps more if the appraisal comes in higher than that figure.

The 14-acre site owned by CCD is zoned general commercial, meaning that CCD could build a shopping center up to 150,000 square feet with no store larger than 36,000 square feet without needing approval from the City Council.

“Lindsey summarized the development agreements major points”; “The developer would approach the DOT about a traffic signal.”; City Council Minutes, June 5 2008, Page 3.

Nothing in the public PTC City Council minutes, in any way, commits the city of PTC to request a traffic light from the GADoT on behalf of this developer.

Just as the city had no power to influence the GADoT about killing the buffer along highway 74S, Highway, utility expansion will kill 74S buffer, the city has no obligation to assist a developer with the installation of a traffic light.

It’s ludicrous to think that in one situation the city can’t do anything to protect the rights of its citizens and in another argue that the city must intercede with the state to protect the rights of a developer who lives in Colorado!

Mayor Logsdon, keep abuse the title for as long as it lasts, you’re no longer welcomed in Peachtree City. After you and the other two stooges loose in the next election I would suggest that the three of you consider moving somewhere else. (I hear Clayton County needs a few good men.)

“DON HADDIX” for Mayor in 2009!
