Donations sought to help family, which lost everything in blaze A woman and three children safely escaped a house fire late Wednesday morning in downtown Fayetteville immediately adjacent to Allan Vigil Ford, officials said. Donations are being sought to help the family which consists of one mother and eight children, ranging in age from 3 months old to 17 years old. The family lost everything in the fire, said the mother, Eronna Porter. The kids’ schools were making efforts to provide clothing and other items for some of the children, Porter said. Of all the family’s needs right now, the greatest might be rental housing as it’s difficult to find a place large enough for the family, Porter said. The family has a particular need for clothing for the four oldest children as follows: • A 17-year-old daughter who wears size 4-5 pants, a medium blouse and shoes size 8; • A 15-year-old son who wears size 34-34 pants, an extra large shirt and a size 10 shoe; • A 14-year-old daughter who wears size 7-8 pants with a medium top and a size 7 and a half shoe; and • An 11-year-old daughter who wears a size 12 pants, a small top and a size 4 and a half shoe. There is also a need for baby furniture for the three month old, Porter said. Donations may be dropped off at a family member’s residence on Price Road in south Fayetteville. To arrange a dropoff, Porter may be contacted at 770-885-6948. Porter said the family would be grateful for any assistance the public can provide. Despite heavy winds that added to the danger of the fire, firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to a nearby home to the east, said Fayetteville Fire Lt. Bill Rieck. Teachers at Fayette Middle School have responded by collecting clothes and other items for the family, which has had four children attend the school, said Principal Sharlene Patterson. An investigation into the fire is underway and it was noted there were several space heaters inside the home though that is not an indication one of them somehow started the fire, Rieck indicated. The first fire crew arrived within three minutes of being dispatched, but by that time flames were shooting outside parts of the home, Rieck said. Fayetteville fire crews were able to work from inside the home to extinguish the flames. Fayette County firefighters also assisted in battling the blaze. The fire was reported as under control just before 12:30 p.m. Rieck said it was surprising how much of the structure is still intact given how intense the flames were initially at the scene. The home's address was 145 Washington Avenue, which is a side street that extends off Church Street. login to post comments |
