New year’s drivers meet law enforcement checkpoints

It must have been a good night for celebrating New Year’s Eve, and for staying in place after the celebrating was done. A holiday roadcheck in Tyrone and Peachtree City amid frigid temperatures resulted in few traffic violations.

Fayette sheriff’s deputies and Tyrone police conducted the first phase of the roadcheck with checkpoints at Senoia Road and Crabapple Lane, and later at Palmetto Road and Arrowood Road.

Those efforts led to two violations for no license and one citation for an expired tag, according to Fayette Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Ward.

The second phase of the roadcheck began at 12:30 a.m. in Peachtree City at the intersection of South Peachtree Parkway and McIntosh Trail and ran until 3 a.m.

Violations noted by deputies included one DUI alcohol, one possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, three expired tags and one motorist driving without a license, Ward said.

Peachtree City police also issued one DUI alcohol ticket during the second phase of the roadcheck, said Peachtree City police spokesperson Rosanna Dove.

Officers in all locations experienced a slow, even sporadic, progression of cars through the checkpoints. The only constant that night was the moderate wind that accentuated the mid-20s temperature.

People are more careful around the holidays.

On the other hand my family was hit and almost killed in April by a careless drunk. We need these roadblocks throughout the year.
