Forget 1-day holidays; county gives 5 for 2

By: Letters to the ...

I was disappointed when I attempted to purchase my tags for my vehicle [the week before Christmas] that the Tax Commissioner’s office was closed three days for what is a one-day holiday.

The office was closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day (expected) and also the day after Christmas (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday).

I feel that as a taxpayer-funded office that is supposed to serve the citizens of Fayette County they should at least have been open on Friday after Christmas.

They also are doing the same thing again this week by closing for the day AFTER New Year’s day, turning a one-day holiday into a two-day holiday at the taxpayers’ expense and inconvenience.

I wonder how much of hard-earned Fayette County taxpayers’ money was paid out in salaries for turning two federal recognized holidays into FIVE paid days off?

It surely is thousands of dollars in tax money that was expended, and it also inconvenienced those of us that have late December birthdays and must get our tags. I could not afford to mail it in and pay early as the clerk suggested I do.

Rather, I expected my county office to be open and working regular business days like the rest of us are.

I am not against the employees personally because they had the five paid days off, but how about a reduced staff instead of full closure of this important office?

I sure wish I could have five paid days off for two holidays. What about you?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Fayette County Tax Commissioner’s Office!

Are you that desperate for something to complain about? Seriously? These people take care of us and our needs all year long. They deserve some down time.

You have it in reverse!
We take care of "those" people all year. (I don't sign their paychecks but I put the money in the bank for the checks).

Some could have worked and others could have worked later!
Or, take the actual legal holidays only, plus their vacations earned.

We are getting adverse to customer service in this country! Even doctors and dentists are closing fully at lunch! Just try a phone anywhere at lunch time!

Ever hear of one-half work at 12 to 1, other half work 11 to 12?
The one-person departments would need someone cross-trained!

The 12 on 12 off thing for three days is also getting abused. After all there are seven days in a week!

Every working person deserves some down time now and then. Most of us have the weekends. Most companies (and I have worked for 4 in my life) have 10 paid holidays. Normally 2 around Christmas (day of and before or after depending upon the calendar) and New Year's day itself. Are you seriously going to suggest that they are only getting 10 holiday days off all year like normal people? With five days off around these past two weeks, they are most likely approaching 15 days of holiday. That is ridiculous for a government-type job with very few metrics and performance measures.
I will go third person for emphasis--The Wedge agrees with Mr. Gay.

My son saved his hard-earned money to buy his first car on December 31st...He got his insurance, emissions sticker and title, just like he was supposed to. He wanted to go up to the tag office that day but I told him to wait until Jan 2nd, because I thought the tag office might close early (like the post office does) on New Years eve.

I was pretty embarassed when we trucked all the way up to the tag office only to find it was closed.

Closing a goverment office the day AFTER a holiday doesn't seem to be a good use of taxpayer dollars.
