Teen, 16, gets 3 years detention in gang caseTue, 12/30/2008 - 5:04pm

A north Fayette teen was found delinquent last month on charges that he participated in a street gang called “Sur 13,” according to Fayette County Juvenile Court records. Anthony M. Newsome, 16, of Wren Drive was sentenced to a youth detention center for 36 months, all of which must be served because there is no parole in juvenile matters. Upon release Newsome must be under another 12 months of intensive supervision by the Department Of Juvenile Justice. This was far from Newsome’s first juvenile offense, as court records detailed 18 other juvenile offenses he has been adjudicated delinquent for in the past four years, including theft of a gun and three simple battery charges. Those incidents were spread out over Clayton, Coweta, Troup and Fayette counties, according to court records. Though most juvenile court records are withheld from the public, this record is open to examination because the gang charge is a “designated felony” under Georgia law. In addition to the ruling on the gang charges, Newsome was also found to be delinquent on charges of obstructing a police officer and carrying a concealed weapon, according to court documents. Prosecutors dismissed charges of aggravated assault, battery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime. According to court documents: • Newsome was involved in a confrontation Nov. 20 in the Landmark Mobile Home Community with another juvenile and pulled out a knife, threatening to stab the victim during the fracas; • Newsome punched the victim in the face and other areas of the body and used his knees to strike the victim also; • Though Newsome denied in court that he was a member of the gang, he said that he and the gang members respect each other and they provide him with bandanas that he wore to show them respect; • Newsome also testified that that he is the protector of a close friend in the mobile home park who is a member of the Sur 13 gang; • A sheriff’s deputy testified that Newsome dropped the knife and an associate of his kicked it away in an attempt to hide it from him during the initial investigation. That deputy also testified that on a previous incident Newsome boasted of his membership in the Sur 13 gang, flashed gang signs and said, “We own this bitch,” referring to the mobile home community; • Newsome testified that he only bragged about a gang affiliation to upset the deputy; • According to the court records Newsome was expelled from public high school and later alternative school for behavior problems. He was later allowed to enroll in adult community school and was reported to be doing well in class; and • Newsome’s mother told court officials that she can not control him and she asked repeatedly for him to be placed outside her home. Newsome’s father reportedly has not had contact with him “for some time.” login to post comments |
