Obama should tone down inauguration

Tue, 12/30/2008 - 3:34pm
By: Letters to the ...

The media predicts that 2 million to 4 million people, drunk on the adoration of the “new messiah,” will descend on Washington, D.C., for the presidential inauguration-anointing of Barack Obama.

I can’t believe that Homeland Security would allow such an assemblage, especially in the nation’s capitol. What an opportunity for terrorists.

The fiasco will cost millions and millions of dollars for increased security and other one-time costs, and result in a great deal of damage to landmarks, grounds and personal property. D.C. will be paralyzed for a week because of the debacle.

For the the sake of security and the economy, Obama would have been wise to limit the inauguration to a brief, simple ceremony. But he’s too impressed with himself to do that.

The nation has hundreds of thousands of people without jobs, and some are running out of food, it is said.

All that time and money wasted; the tremendous security risks; the hundreds of thousands of lost time on the collective jobs of the masses — for the sake of ego recognition.

It’s ironic that every time I use the words Barack and Obama, my word processor throws up a red flag.

Hey JC,
Perhaps, you better add Barack Obama to your word processor. He isn't going away!

With the economy the way it is, people out of work and hurting, I think that if Obama had a simple inauguration and gave the money to the people, he would gain a lot of respect. It is outrageous to waste all of that money, in these times.

Submitted by Bonkers on Sat, 01/03/2009 - 5:39am.

All money spent is contributing to the economy. It is not tax money anyway--it is all contributed by wealthy people.

I realize it makes some feel badly who want the money themselves, but you wouldn't get it anyway under any circumstances!

Let them spend it.

You should buy stock in the cognac and gin distilleries for their stock is about to to take off, Caddillac looks promising to, as well any company that produces the spinning rim. I hope guinness book of world records is on hand in D.C. that day for im sure we will see some new world records set, and created..GOD BLESS...

It was reported that In 2001 there was no ramp space left for private/corporate jets at any airport close to Washington DC, every oil/energy man was there with his boots and Stetson. Enron gave over $300.000 (remember Enron?) to the inaugural festivities, GM and Ford hosted elaborate expensive parties. Materialism was king and the big spenders had themselves a big party. They knew that they had a President who would push their agenda.

In 2005, in the midst of a war, president Bush again put on an inauguration of excesses. But there was still money to be made by war profiteers so the inauguration parties had to go on.

Now we are told By J.C.Lovett to cut back on the inauguration because we are in hard times- brought on by the Bush administration. I guess he did not vote for Barrack Obama.

We, the people who voted for our new President, are proud to donate $25 to the inauguration of President Obama. We financed his victory with our small donations and we will pay for our own inauguration, thankyou. Sore losers need not attend.

Submitted by jdoe41 on Thu, 01/01/2009 - 7:10pm.

It wasn't Bush who got us into this mess. Its called a negative one percent savings rate, 9-11, greed, and a self interested congress full of dems and republicans. I bet you failed to contribute to your 401K before pissing away $25 on the Obama campaign . . . see what I mean

So unless you were at the inaugeral party and can produce photos of these "oil guys in stetsons" - we are not inclined to believe you don't know what you are talking about and by the way . . . Castro did not have JFK killed.

Look, you guys claimed that the Clinton successes, after seven years in office, were the result of Bush the First policies.

We are just using your methodolgy to make our case.

I retired several years ago and do not need to contribute to a 401k.

jdoe41 you use a computer so I know you know about Google. Try it sometime.

Castro did not kill Kennedy. Prescott Bush may have known who did however.

Maybe look at the inauguration donation list that was published yesterday in the Boston Globe. $50,000 seemed to be the most dominant category of giving. Wonder what those people expect for their cash.

I suggest you maintain a laser-like focus on this issue until it gains the press it deserves; and the outrage! Stay the course. Don't falter. We are counting on you guys to shine the light of fiscal responsibility on this wasteful inauguration.

The fact that Obama has a huge ego and his followers (and voters) don't have a clue about how government works - except the welfare part is not big news, so why should an over-the-top inauguration be a surprise.

The donor list of liberal elites who think our country's huge lurch toward total socialism is worth celebrating with $50,000 donations for a party rather than donating it to feed 50 families is not news either. It is simply more evidence of how sick our society is and how far gone we are when it comes to common sense.

Our grandchildren will be living in tent cities working for slave wages on government bridge-building projects and our generation will be living in government-run nursing homes until we need expensive medical procedures at which point we will be put to sleep. That's the real news and it is not far-fetched if you seriously read what this empty suit President-elect wants to do.

Oh yea, I almost forgot - Happy New Year!

I thought Bush had been in charge for eight years!

And, made the current proposals that you listed! Oh, he did give most of it to banks, didn't he? Even made some new banks (GMAC).
They won't even loan it.

It is sad when someone like you are so party oriented that you don't even know who allowed us to get so screwed up!

I think the Republican Party is useless and have no allegiance to them. I think Bush was a great President on defense and a miserable failure on immigration, government spending and the economy. I also think he's been phoning it in the last 2 years - he simply doesn't care anymore.

Both parties can take equal blame for the financial mess. I know how and why it started, but I'm not giving that lecture again (at least not now). When Bush warned Congress about Fannie and Freddie in 2001 and McCain did again in 2005 and 2 different Congresses did absolutely nothing about it - that's bi-partisan blame.

Obama deserves a honeymoon period, but he probably won't get it, partially because of the economy and the "big event" Joe Biden predicted. I think Iran will nuke Israel if they invade and clean out the Hamas scum this weekend - technically that would be a Bush problem, but it would be Obama's to sort out and manage the US reaction.

I look forward to the day - probably 2 years in the future when these small-minded people have to stop their Bush-bashing which of course is sour grapes about 2000 in Florida. Of course if it had gone the other way, Al Gore would have been President when the towers were attacked and he would certainly not have gone after Iraq. Then we would have the same situation in the Middle East PLUS an emboldened Saddam Hussein running Iraq - and by now he would have gotten those nukes from North Korea or Iran. That would complicate things, wouldn't it?

Oh yea, and Hillary would be the incoming President because Gore would have lost his VP about 2 years ago and appointed Hillary, so she'd have run as an incumbent VP and the Obama thing would not have taken flight. Couldn't promote "change" when you already had socialists running the country.

So, sure thing could be worse than they are.

Iran will nuke Israel even though they don't have nukes? The Middle East situation would be the same if Gore won and did not invade Iraq? Sunni Saddam would have gotten (non-existent) nukes from arch enemy Shia Iran? Gore's imaginary VP would have resigned or died and Gore would have selected Hillary? Complaining still about Dem's being socialist after what the Rep's have done?

Weird bizarro world you live in Robert.

It won’t change the fate of America & Western Civilization. The voluminous works of many historians from both sides of the spectrum including Marx, Toynbee, Spengler, Sarkar & Keynes helped produce a proven theory of the social cycle of historical determinism. History proves that society is composed of 4 types of people that create a cycle of social change and eras, each with a different frame of mind. They are by nature, Warriors, Intellectuals, Capitalists, and Laborers.

The first three take turns in controlling political power and social supremacy in any civilization. The laborers are unequipped to attain prominence.

The Laborer Era - Historically laborers are unskilled, workers, peasants or serfs who lack technical skills and education and do not take the lead in society. The distinctive feature of laborers is disregard of governmental authority and law. Such disregard is manifested in violent crime, disrespect for parental authority, frequent divorces, prostitution, and abandonment of the elderly. If most of these characteristics control society, it is unmistakably in the laborer age, which results in rioting and lawless chaos. One might note that America has one foot in this era.

The Warrior Era - The Warrior believes in physical discipline and authoritarian government. Warrior eras have been characterized by political centralization, monarchs, dictators or powerful military leaders. Warrior eras develop from of laborer eras out of necessity for societal order. The family becomes a discipline unit, unlike America today. The Warrior class is composed of army officers, skilled laborers, adventurers or anyone who wants to solve society’s problems via a fight or physical strength. The Warrior is more intelligent than laborers and forces them in line.

The Intellectual Era - Warrior eras at first are welcomed by the people (Hitler) and initially enjoy progress and stability, but as people tire of autocratic rule, the intellectuals take control of the warrior’s mind by devising theories and dogmas to confuse the warrior in government, education and law. Priests, scientists, lawyers, physicians and teachers constitute the intellectual group. They obtain political power by their superior use of their intellect and use the warriors to control the laborers.

The Capitalist Era - The capitalist mind enjoys money, wealth and material things and amass wealth for a rainy day. Capitalists are made up of money lenders, merchants, investors, wall street, and business corporations. Everyone likes money and material objects, so the capitalists over time come to dominate the other three groups by purchasing their services. They buy control of government by giving money to politicians. Capitalists control all presidents including Obama. They amass untold wealth from government contracts, favorable laws, regulations and tax incentives, control of natural resources, production, supply and money. In the first stage of capitalism, everyone’s standard of living goes up. In the later stages of capitalism, materialism corrupts all of society and evidences of crime, divorce, broken families, prostitution, disrespect of parental authority, excessive government and individual spending collapses the economy and signals the end of the capitalists era. Then the cycle starts all over again. This is the natural order of the rise and fall of civilizations. Sound familiar?

Those who argue Democrats and Republicans are merely caught up in the last days of the capitalist era. Obama’s big spending program will be the final nail in the capitalists era coffin. Look for the laborer cum warrior era next.

According to the Washington Post 60,000 people have volunteered to help with the festivities. They will have to pay for their own transportation and food etc.

Good spin on he Boston Globe article Robert W. Morgan. The headline was "Obama inaugural fund a study in transparency". You did not mention that.

Folks, this election was a rejection of the Bush Doctrine, the Clinton Legacy and the Kennedy Dynasty. America overwhelmingly voted for change. We are done with the old politics. Obama is the most pragmatic politician we have had since Truman. He will do what is necessary to bring this country back from cronyism and intolerance.

So, go ahead all you cynics and naysayers, look at the negatives and nothing else and you will miss the ride. All Hannitized and Limbaugh ditto heads need not apply.

No, “America” did not vote for change. I suggest you check the statistics of the voter breakdown. The “America” you refer to are the ones that didn’t bother to come back out to vote in the Georgia Senate Race. Funny how it is that since the Senate race didn’t include a minority…..Saxby won!!! Go figure!

Don’t be so quick to say “America” voted….hate to burst your bubble….the people that believe “their (savior) man” is going to pay for their housing, gasoline and take from the rich and give to them, is the America you refer to.

Flip? Hello? Is anyone home? Are you saying that the red state of Georgia = America as opposed to America equaling America? You are a proud red-stater. That's fine, but don't forget: You lost the Civil War and you lost the last election on every level; House, Senate, and Exec. I don't know why anyone repeats this because you will continue to somehow try to paint a decisive electoral victory by Barack as some kind of nail-biter or minority turned majority voodoo mathematics. Fine with me, because I know who will be on the phone with Olmert come January 20th.

Submitted by swac on Thu, 01/01/2009 - 7:59pm.

The Georgia senate race was unique. The dems did not want Vernon Jones to be their candidate. Jim Martin was the anti Jones vote by the dems.

The surprise was that Saxby did not win by a landslide in the general election. If the dems had put up a viable candidate they would have won.

I wouldn't be too happy that it took two elections to beat a second stringer.

We democrats do not believe that president Elect Obama is our savior. I only read that kind of talk on right wing web sites. We only have one Savior and he is not political.

His name is not Saxby. At least not his last name. His last name is Chambliss. But he put out innumerable political ads where he called himself Saxby, and now the whole world seems to think his name is Saxby. It just shows you that political brainwashing works. He is the only U.S. Senator (out of 100) that people call by his first name, thinking it's his last name. How about that!
