Local athletes make their collegiate choicesThu, 02/02/2006 - 4:10pm

A number of local athletes got in on the act on National Signing Day, which took place this past Wednesday. It was the first day that athletes could sign letters of intent to accept a scholarship from a university to play a sport there. Starr’s Mill had three football playersmake committments; Lewis Parks, a tight end, signed with Bowling Green State University, while offensive lineman Tony Barr and defensive end Bradley Conner made a committment with the Air Force Academy. There was no official confirmation from the school because recruits in the service academies do not sign letters of intent. Starr’s Mill also had seven soccer players sign letters of intent on Wednesday with Kelley O’Hara choosing Stanford, Katie Jacobsen signing with the University of Georgia, Adrienne Phillips and Jamie Daley committing to West Georgia, Tannah Castro selecting Furman and Sarah Capati signing with Berry College. Riley Phelps of the boys soccer team signed with Coastal Carolina University. Fayette County High School had four football players sign letters of intent on Wednesday. Jamal Daniel chose Louisiana College, Jeremiah Enloe signed with Georgia Southern University, Brandon Henderson comitted to Mississippi State University and Channing Welch chose Furman. The school also had three soccer players sign letters of intent. Jenny Ross signed with West Georgia, Nasar Onyeuku signed with Furman and Jonathan Collier selected Virginia Tech. Sandy Creek High School had five football players make committments to colleges and universities. Stephan Atrice committed to the Air Force Academy, Brent Brewer signed with Florida State University, Aybid Coleman selected Charleston Southern University, E.J.
