New Fayette gov't watchdog group unveils plansThu, 12/11/2008 - 12:23pm
By: Ben Nelms
Fayette County’s newest non-profit, Fayette Citizens for Open Government (FAYcog), held its first press conference Thursday morning. The group used the occasion to announce its intention to serve as a watchdog on behalf of citizens, to monitor local government and inform county residents of ongoing issues of importance. FAYcog members said they will monitor the actions of several elected bodies throughout the county and advocate for greater transparency and accountability by requesting that governments televise meetings and/or include them on their respective websites. But the group’s initial focus is on Fayette County Commission. FAYcog Co-chairman James Wingo said representatives will attend the county commission meeting later today, noting the group’s opposition to the proposal to implement a defined benefits plan for county employees. Though not opposed to employees having a benefits plan, Wingo said the current proposal is an example of poor communication with the people of Fayette County whose taxes will fund that plan. “They just put the information on the website last week,” Wingo said. “But they have had the information since October 2007.” Co-chairman Harold Bost said the group has approximately 40 active members along with approximately 40 others that maintain some level of active participation.
