Santa Run changes: no dash thru PTC

Children in Peachtree City won’t be able to get a glimpse of Santa Claus whirling by on a fire engine this year.

Due to budget cutbacks and a need to reduce fuel use and wear and tear, the Santa Run format has been changed, organizers said.

It’s the end of an annual tradition that featured neighborhood children listening for the sirens to know Santa was nearby.

This year children are being invited to visit Santa at the Leach Fire Station at Ga. Highway 74 and Paschall Road on Sundays Dec. 14 and 21 from noon to 4 p.m.

Santa and his elves will be there and canned/non-perishable goods will be collected for local churches who feed the needy. The station is also a drop-off point for the annual U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots drive, so participants are asked to bring a new unwrapped child’s gift if they wish.

Visitors will be welcome to check out the fire trucks, the fire station and visit with firefighters during the event.

Organizers hope to return to the original Santa Run format next year.

The trucks need to be driven anyways, a certain amount at least..

Oh well, another nice tradition apparently down the drain. Sad

Like PTC doesn't have enough operational costs? Do you know what the costs on the fire trucks are? It would be different if they'd put the PD on motorcycles and in more efficient, yet suitable vehicles, but for some reason, Fayette County is GLUED to automotive inefficiency and waste. We don't have any real terrain, yet the force owns an SUV.

Just run a search on hybrid police cars sometime (like
http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0geu6oC6T9J38QAwm5XNyoA?p=hybrid+police+cars&y=Search&fr=&ei=UTF-8) and see how many cities of all sizes are finding new solutions. There is NO reason for towns the size of PTC and Tyrone to be in big Crown Victorias. When there are incidents, they can always call for backup. For regular patrol, motorcycles would seem ideal in an area where there's only potentially bad weather 2-3 months per year . . . And with the recent rain deficit, they ain't exactly getting all that wet . . .

Another highly informative site is http://www.government-fleet.com/News/List.aspx.

It would be great to understand why code enforcement and the restaurant inspectors are riding around in 5-passenger sedans . . .

Your post is so flawed I really don't know where to begin.
1. You are obviously not familiar with law enforcement, "There is NO reason for towns the size of PTC and Tyrone to be in big Crown Victorias". How much are the hybrid cars you propose? I assure you they can not beat the government discounted price for the crown victorias. The interior room is essential for prisoner transport. I have seen other police departments go with other vehicles and they always go back to the crown victorias. The only thing close right now is the dodge charger. By the way, all City vehicles are purchased via the discounted government rate. That is the reason why they can drive around in SUV's and other vehicles.
2. You may not be aware but the Peachtee City Police Department was one of the first agencies in the country to become "green". In the mid 90's PCPD changed over it's entire fleet to natural gas vehicles. What a complete debacle that was. The vehicles began breaking down around 20,000 miles and cost more in upkeep than the savings.
Listen, you need to move away from budget cuts in regards to any public safety matters. Why don't you focus on the outrageous Rec. Department budget for Peachtree City and Fayette County. Leave the public safety matters to the men and women who know what they are doing. Have a nice day.

And you make good points, why do they have to use a fire truck and an ambulance and other trucks.
