Three local schools deemed 'excellent'

Two Fayette schools and one Coweta school were named as Georgia Schools of Excellence this morning.

Ironically, Huddleston Elementary and McIntosh High schools tied for top honors for being at the tops of the 3rd congressional district.

Northgate High School was selected for having the greatest continuous gains in student achievement in reading and math, officials said.

Both Fayette schools were honored for being in the top 10 percent of schools in Georgia as measured by reading and math assessments, officials said.

The three schools will be feted along with Georgia's other top schools at a banquet Jan. 23 in College Park.

"These schools are getting great results from all students in many different areas," Georgia School Superintendent Kathy Cox said. "The teachers, students and administrators at these schools truly represent excellence. Congratulations to our 2008 Georgia Schools of Excellence."

Cox taught history at McIntosh before she was elected as superintendent.

How is this in any way "ironic"?

Is it verbal irony? Perhaps both schools are actually atrocious and are sarcastically being dubbed as excellent?

Is it dramatic irony? The rest of the city knows of the schools’ excellence, but the schools themselves do not?

Irony of fate, perhaps? Will the schools tragically close as a result of their recognition?

Is this a case of situational irony? Will perverse appropriateness enliven the discrepancy between the expected results of the school evaluations and the actual outcome?

Did you perhaps use your powers of foresight to predict the future outcome and recognize it to be in sharp contrast with Kathy Cox's view of the world as opposed to future paradigms? Is this a case of historical irony?
