Look before you buy at the grocery store.

Cyclist's picture

I went to the local grocery store - which will remain unnamed - to purchase the ingredients for today's lunch. I was sort of taken back when I seen that the frozen vegetables that I was going to purchase were grown in China.

The Food and Drug Administration’s discovery of melamine and a byproduct of the chemical in two U.S.-made formulas doesn’t pose health risks,......

The FDA had said before finding the contamination that melamine may be harmful in infant formula in any amount.

Speaking of eatin' and killin' critters...Sarah Palin conducted an interview recently outside a turkey slaughter house, while in the background "Joe the Turkey Killer" shoves a turkey into a death machine, as the bird struggles and kicks violently before it is decapitated. Weird scene... bizarre and comical at the same time. I found myself not even listening to her, but watching that struggling bird fight for its life and "barnyard Joe" grinning in the background.

Wake up, Sarah! Try to be a little more circumspect.

This is like the Theater of the Absurd. Or, it reminds me of a scene in Woody Allen's "Love and Death." There is a conversation taking [place in the immediate foreground. But in the distant background, you see Napoleon and his double interacting. First, Napoleon is instructing the double on how to conduct himself. But it breaks down into a fistfight between two Napoleons. The movies in the "Airplane" genre were good at this sort of thing as well.

A politician who would grant an interview in the foreground of a bloodbath would also think she is talking to the French president--despite the many hints given by the comedians (e.g., "My wife is hot in bed," "I can see Belgium from my house").

It's good to know that our food and subsistence isn't something that is fabricated in a factory. But... I think I would have chose a different backdrop for an interview myself. LOL.

Anyways... I can't wait to sink my teeth into some good dark meat dripping with some rich giblet gravy come next Thursday. I'm driveling as we speak....

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Lest you be a turkey. Oh well..it's a very good thing to be at the top of the food chain. Smiling

The only meat I buy at the grocery store is chicken. I get hamburger...etc. at Spezzano's Village Market in Tyrone. Very good meat that they hand cut in the store.

My son went to my favorite grocery store (starts with a P) to pick up some hamburger meat. On the label ..product of USA, Canada & Mexico!

I buy most of my groceries there. I'm having second thoughts now, and will email the company.

Dean Keiffer, president of OG&SP, responded to a question from the
audience regarding whether packers would comply with the spirit of the
law. He said the loophole allowing them to use a mixed origin label on U.S. cattle was being addressed in Washington D.C. Early on, packers had threatened to stamp all of their beef with a label saying it was “Product of the USA, Mexico and Canada” to avoid extra paperwork and segregation requirements. In recent days, the major packers have said they will instead agree to label as much of their product as they can with Product of the USA. Tyson, for example, estimated that 90 percent of its fresh beef and pork would qualify to be labeled as USA product.

Thanks for the info. and the link. Very interesting. I grew up on a farm and we ate just about everything, so I don't think I'm one of them wussies. LOL

I'm still boycotting P----- until I get a response. Smiling

Missed you too. I'm doing well and hope you are. As far as where have I been? Ahhh... tired of bickering over politics and issues with folks who have chose a side and refuse to budge even when the facts prove them in error. I've been re-examining my politcal philosophies and am conservatively strengthened in many ways and moderated in others. Problem is I pretty much stand in direct opposition of both parties that are leading us today. It's a pretty complicated thang we've got going on these days. So I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to kick back, watch the feeding frenzy from the side for a bit, and self indulge and let the rest of the world devour it's self until it comes to my door. Hell, ain't no one else willing to make the hard decisions needed to redirect this country so why should I give a rip anymore?

I'm just going to try to avoid that loud sucking sound that everyone seems to be gravitating toward.

Other than that... Life is GREAT!

Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm a turkey eatin' wuss and rarely eat beef anymore. I remember seeing this video several years ago and recall vividly the part about cattle and how the USDA would certify meat as "pure", even though the meat had come from cows with cancerous sores and puss-filled lesions....Shocked oh yummy!

Veggies look awful good after watching this. I grew up on a Farm and our animals, cows, pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, geese, horses, raccoons, squirrels, cats, dogs etc. were always part of the family. The kitchen was an area to set baby animals by the stove to get warmed up and to be fed by a bottle if need be. My Grandfather had a dairy farm and all of his cows, were his girls, treated like Queens, they all got sweet talked every day at milking time.

I remember years ago reading about all the chemicals that have to be put in chickens, turkey's an other fowl, practically from still in the shells, it was sickening and stayed away from chicken, turkey for a long time.
After watching how all these animals in this video are treated, is absolutely sickening and very unnecessary. Yes, Veggies look awful good. Time to feed my critters and I will give mine an extra hug today..and tell them how lucky they really are.

Sounds like you had an adventurous upbringing, growing up on a farm with all those critters.

With Thanksgiving coming up, I'm tempted now to cook a "Tofurkey" for my spouse's, meat-eating southern family, but I think they would end up throwing it at me. One year, a relative brought some wild deer sausage he had made from one of his backyard kills and that was the year Georgia was finding "mad cow" disease in the deer population. We didn't touch the stuff.

Growing up on a farm was wonderful and never a lack of something to do.
I love Tofu but like your family mine would not appreciate Tofurky even though they too have a love of animals, they still have to have their meat fix and so do I except I prefer fish. So Turkey it will be on Turkey day.
On Palin video...that woman is such a twit..I sure am glad she is happy in Alaska, if she would only stay there now.

On another subject. I was reading about all the store closings on a web site for early next year and it said to be careful of gift cards this year because of so many store closings that might be happening next year...so just wanted to give everyone a HEADS UP before Xmas and gift cards. I was surprised by some closings. I will try and find that web site and post it on blogs. I don't know if it is an authentic site so do your research on stores, before you trust a web site.

The web site for store closings next year. Make sure you check this info out because I'm not sure this is an authentic list. Better to know than be sorry later. If this list is authentic I will be sorry to see some of them go completely out of business. Times sure are difficult for everyone these days.

Even though the meat might come from other Countries it still has to be inspected if it comes into the USA. I believe we(USA) have been getting beef and other meat from more places than even Canada, and Mexico. Now, since Bush has been in office almost 8 years there is a possibility he has deregulated the inspection Office, just kidding...but I believe I have read that they(AG department) don't and can't inspect the meat like they use to because they don't have the people to do it. Guess this will be another item Obama will have on his plate to correct if we can afford to do it. Who knows what we have all been exposed to for the last 8 years under deregulation of everything.

Have you ever tried ground turkey meat instead of hamburger? It's healthier, less fat, and the critters are raised here in the U.S., not in Canada or Mexico.

Also, that "Springer Mtn. Farms" all natural meat sold at Publix is healthy, no hormones or chemicals and I believe the critters are raised in Tennessee.

I thought that I would share with you all my recipe for spaghetti. If you try it, I think you'll be amazed by how good it is and it calls for veggies instead of meat. I don't ever measure when I cook so I'll just give ingredients - you can measure to your own taste.

REMEMBER: WHEN IT COMES TO HERBS, FRESH HAS THE MOST ROBUST FLAVOR.

In a saucepan saute in olive oil: fresh oregano, basil, italian parsley, garlic, onion, finely chopped mushrooms, finely chopped celery, and finely chopped carrots (yes, carrots - they are naturally sweet and will, along with the chopped celery and mushrooms, add a 'meaty' texture to the sauce). Saute briefly then add 1 can of crushed tomatoes (homegrown is best, but hard to find this time of year). Add brown sugar a little at a time - while the carrots are sweet you will still need to add a small amount of brown sugar or honey. I often find that I add a little more onion powder and pepper for taste but that will be up to you. Allow to simmer a while and serve over vermicelli (doctor says I should be eating whole wheat pasta but I just can't get used to it).

My husband ate this spaghetti for years and never knew that it was meatless! I hope you try it and love it. I also sneak in some baby spinach into the salad and the kids never know that they're eating spinach. Then, to top off this healthy dinner - I cover my salad with Caesar dressing!! Yeah, I know!

...ground turkey is the way to go. Further, the Deli at Publix is a notch above(opinion). Haven't really noticed where the critters are raised, I don't shop wearing my glasses, so I'll take your word for it.

Every once in awhile, some of us just have to experience that homemade 100% ground beef cheeseburger supreme deluxe. You could call it a male thing.

I have bought and usually paid more for meat I purchased at that store because they have always advertised that they do not inject fat, water or anything in their meat products. When I saw that label and asked the butcher about it he just shrugged his shoulders. I didn't and won't be buying any of that meat--in fact, more and more I am trying to stay away from meat products for just that reason. When I told friends about the labels they couldn't believe it. Pays to read labels. We have restrictions on how our meat is grown and processed in this country and yet we let meat come in from other countries which do not adhere to same standards. Go figure! Let us know if you get a reply to your e-mail--I didn't.

I loved it. Getting your steaks cut exactly as you wanted them. Good customer service. I had the same type of place I would frequent when I lived in South Florida---then after years it went to pre-packing it's meat---still good and fresh but not the same. More and more I am moving away from meat and chicken. Sad part is that I am not that great a veggie lover--guess that will have to change.

Foreign countries don't have the same standards as we do. Some chemicals and pesticides that have been outlawed here, are very legal and used frequently there.
