Late night golf cart joyride in PTC seriously injures girl

By: John Munford

A juvenile girl was injured just before midnight Friday after falling off a golf cart and being run over by the vehicle, police said.

The unnamed juvenile had climbed onto the front bumper of the cart while it was still moving prior to the fall, police said.

The victim, who is listed in critical but stable condition, was treated by Peachtree City medics and then flown to Grady Hospital.

The cart was driven by Allison Patricia Gair, 17, of Peachtree City, police said.

Gair and her two juvenile passengers had been spending the night at a friend’s home and reportedly took the cart without the owner’s permission, police said.

it amazes me how judgemental some of you are. a girl got seriously injured yes, but is it really any of yalls business what happened? no. the girl is in the hopital and the friend feels terrible about what happened. end of story. stop judging her friend and stop judging her for this. it is not as big of a deal as everyone is making it out to be. its not your responsibility to think up punishments for them. that is their parents. and im sure that they will. if this is honestly all our city is worried about then we have some bigger problems than just an injured girl. please everyone just drop it and leave her and her family alone. its over and done with and is being handled. much to most of yalls dismay there is nothing you can do about this except for rant about how terrible teenagers on golf carts are. and while you are doing this there is a classmate of mine in the hospital. everyone lets just drop it and let it be. the family and her friends are already worried enough without the added stress of a "concerned community". thank you

It seems to me that the children who have posted comments have not learned anything from this terrible accident. It's awful that a child was injured. I hope for her full and speedy recovery, and I feel for the driver, but I don't think kids should be driving golf carts. It seems ridiculous that the same kids who would not get in a car without buckling up would think they were safe in a vulnerable vehicle like a golf cart, and that parents would allow it. It's a terrible tragedy that could have been avoided. Kids are about having fun--they make wrong choices sometimes. It's appalling that children 17 and under are permitted to roam the streets at night. Where are the police? Where are the parents?

By the way, Student 15, "yalls" is not a word. Spend less time on a golf cart and more time studying your grammar.

I have up and coming teenagers. They do not believe that they will make bad decisions. It won't happen to them. They are bullet proof, etc. I doubt if any of the people involved thought of logical consequences for their actions. Well, others can learn from it. I pray that your friend isn't permanently affected by this.

Ok you guys have no right to comment on this because this is not the whole and truthful story and you have no earthly idea what actually occurred. The police and this paper are totally biased and make people sound and look like criminals when they're not. The Citizen really needs to get its facts straight before it shoots off its mouth and distributes false information.

I know u and i go to the same school and i am friends with the people it happened to and this is story is way off so get your story straight.

You guys really want to know what happened? Well here it is: The girl that was injured did not move to the front of the golfcart while moving. She may have been on the front, but not while the golfcart was in motion. And the girl that was listed as the driver did, in fact, drive the golfcart, but not while people were on the front. And the girl who was injured was injured because she tripped getting off of the front of the golfcart and hit her head on the ground.
I'm friends with all of those involved so if you try and say I don't know what I'm talking about, you're wrong.

Now is a GREAT time to stop talking about this; a really, really, really good time. Honestly. Stop digging. Please.

Police say--joy riding--or so says the newspaper. Girl fell off and got run over by the golf cart--------but no, says another------no one was driving the cart and it wasn't moving when she hit her hit on the ground----or something.
The girl hasn't said apparently!
Hack wants the conversation stopped, and no more "digging!"

Now is a really, really, really likes her time! (Sally Fields).

I have a better story:
There was a golf cart somewhere out there in the dark. A girl somehow had to go to Grady, hurt. Some were 17, and some were younger and they were outside late. One was left-handed and one leg was shorter than the other (I just threw that in). All of them had hair. All were dressed when the accident happened.
They were all citizens, no illegals among them unless they headed into the woods before the cops got there!

I saw a nine-10 year old driving one of those machines today. Daddy or Grandpa was in the shotgun seat, advising. I don't think it was that bunch---some were only 3-4 years of age. Some are dumb and dumber,

Maybe the cops and the newspaper can reinterview all and come up with one sensible straight story---which they won't print---but just prosecute any law violations. If none---forget it.
Could they be the ones destroying mail-boxes here again?

I wish I could tell you what really happened, but I'm not entitled to do that. Sorry

Regardless of how/why if I ever was even remotely involved in such a situation the first thing my parents would do is beat my bottom. Then they would ask me, “junior what happened”?

Parents…here’s some advice…stop being friends first with your kids! Be a parent first, then friend.

This story is important because it demonstrates how dangerous a golf cart can be. I've seen adults and kids alike driving with reckless abandon and this shows everyone what can happen.

HOWEVER, what purpose does it serve to print a 17 year old's name in your publication? How are your readers and the public's interest served by your decision to publish her name?

Your journalistic skill and judgement is better suited for the National Inquirer. You owe the girl an apology.

I agree with your first comment. It seems to me that PTC needs to limit WHO can drive a golf cart. No one under 18. Those who do drive a golf cart should have a license to drive it, and they should be subject to laws that dictate the way it's driven or have their license revoked.

Problem solved.

Submitted by LandStar on Thu, 11/13/2008 - 7:34am.

Is the golf cart the PTC status symbol? Elderly people without licenses should not be allowed to drive a cart on public streets, in my opinion. Kids should not be allowed to drive a cart on public streets, in my opinion.

Following your logic, why not get rid of the law that prevents kids/elderly citizens without licenses to drive Harleys around PTC?

Sure what's another death or two (that could be avoided)? Nothing unless it's someone YOU love.

PTC Ordinance

Sec. 78-93. Operation regulations.
(a) Those persons who are 16 years of age and older may drive a motorized cart on the recreation paths and/or streets and those areas accessible by the public of the city unless such person has had his or her license to operate a motor vehicle suspended or revoked by the state which issued said license in which case such person shall not be permitted to operate a motorized cart on the recreation paths and/or streets and those areas accessible by the public of the city during the time of suspension or revocation.

Change the ordinance. The city just saw the consequence and combination of kids, golf carts, and parents who don't know where their kids are.

They tried that a couple of years back. Some conservative judicial activist declared unilaterally that a golf cart was a car and therefore only licensed drivers could operate one.

The very first bill to come out of the legislature the next year and signed by the governor was a bill stating a golf cart was most certainly NOT an automobile.

Kids can drive in carts from 12 onward with parents aboard and 15 and up with a learners. I think that is fair and reasonable. The number of cart accidents pales in comparison with car accidents around here. I think golf carts make excellent drivers out of kids.

Let's see, first this steals a vehicle and while joyriding in it critically injures one of the joyriders and you're worried about the reporters judgment? Your judgment and priorities is what's in question.

That there's just nothing for teenagers in PTC to do! All these pent up hormones will spill over into mindless senseless distractions and actions. If you really want to help prevent the majority of these infractions and accidents, come up with places for teens to go so they won't BE in the predicaments. SPLOST this one, Fayette!

How did teens get by 30 years ago without a specific place for them? 40? 50? It is not that teens need a place to cater to their every whim. Realistically, life is not like that. We parents need to quit coddling our kids, giving them no boundaries, and trying to be their friends.

Let's see..it was around midnight and a group of kids had nothing to do and thought to be mischievous. How about this...after 10:00pm or whatever time the football game ends, be home or somewhere with a definite purpose. My parents never gave me a curfew, but I had to tell them exactly where I was going and what time I would be reasonably home. Hanging out behind someone's house with no adult supervision wasn't tolerated.

It works pretty well to parent that way.

I think the girl owes the girl in the hospital a big apology plus they all got a lot of splainin' to do about why they were on that cart in the first place.

Submitted by LandStar on Wed, 11/12/2008 - 7:08pm.

rzz, Kids are kids, and the situation could have been reversed. 17, legal or not, is still a child and I'm sure the driver is very distraught over the child who was hurt. It was an accident! She happened to be behind the wheel. I wouldn't want my child to be in either position, and I don't think it's productive to say hateful things about the driver. Why not just hope that the injured child recovers completely, and that parents and kids learn something from this.

Submitted by Daniel Ross on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 4:28pm.

By law, a 17 year-old loses the anonymity of childhood and their names are released by the police to the press. This can be demonstrated in the article where the injured girl's name isn't released while the driver's is. Also, if you do the crime, everybody should know.

Sorry . . . poor journalist judgement

You sound like an attorney so tell us who determines whether a crime was committed in the United States?

Submitted by skyspy on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 6:11pm.

Not poor journalistic judgement. Actually people 17yrs and older have been named in every newspaper across the country when they make "poor choices".

Didn't your mama ever tell you: If you would be embarrassed to have it put on the front page of the newspaper DON'T DO IT!!

Is anyone really surprised that this happened?? Seriously??? It is sad that it happened but ....seriously I see teens dragging each other all of the time behind my house. Either they are dragging someone on a skateboard, or bike or rollerblades or they run to catch up and jump on, just like this kid did. This isn't new folks.

Can we move on to some real news?
