Whitewater makes playoffs, avenges early loss to Mays with 35-7 winFri, 11/07/2008 - 10:43pm
By: John Munford
Whitewater secured a playoff spot Friday night in a manhandling of the Mays Raiders 35-7. The Wildcats controlled the ball in the driving rain, eating 10 minutes off the clock before scoring on their first drive. Josh Clemons punched his way in from the 1 to go up 7-0. But it wouldn't be until the second quarter when Whitewater began to pour it on. On their first possession in the second quarter, Austin Faulkner's 28-yard run just missed scoring, but Zach Mann drove it home from the 1 to make it 14-0. Then with five minutes left Davis Knowles picked off a Mays pass at midfield and danced around several would-be tacklers on his way to a score, putting Whitewater up 21-0. On their next drive, the Wildcats perfectly executed a flea-flicker as Jack Grove chucked the ball nearly 50 yards to a wide-open Jeff Ashley for a 28-0 score at the half. Whitewater added one more score in the third quarter as Faulkner dashed 58 yards for a touchdown, faking out the final defender between him and the end zone. Mays, which was held in check by the Wildcat defense with few threats the entire game, scored with less than five minutes left as a running back leapt over the middle from the 1, but that was all the Raiders could manage. login to post comments |
