What I have learned...

I've learned that I don't have an opinion about the election and I can't make an opinion about other people's opinions. Craigslist.com has a rant and rave section. I decided to get on and I was reading some of the most racist comments. I live in the Atlanta, GA area and people in and around here are very...opinionated. I posted an opinion about how people need to lay off being racist and using racial slurs toward Obama, African Americans, and other minorities that voted for Obama. I also mentioned that I think Obama will make this country a better place and a role model for other countries. People were saying that terrorist are really happy he won. If anything, him being our soon-to-be president would make terrorist think twice. Other countries like Japan and places in Africa are very happy Obama won. I mentioned that it was my first time voting, being 18, and that I am an African AMERICAN. All the responses I got back about my OPINION was that I was stupid, an idiot, a stupid ape, the n-word, go back to Africa, leave the country we don't want you, etc. Why in the world do people say such hurtful things? I know people say "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." This phrase is so wrong. People reading this now maybe thinking I am stupid, an idiot, etc for letting people get to me but when they say this too you directly in a post or email back, it's like they are really talking to you, putting me down. No one will ever know how I feel about it. Now I know that I can't have an opinion about anything because people will tell me I am an ape and blah blah and to shut up $#!@ and stuff. All the comments and hate post that I got about my opinion on craigslist makes me not like being an African American because other people are making hateful comments toward us. Just from that sentence alone people will probably be emailing me and such telling me what a horrible person I am and this and that. People will probably say, "this is America and people will have their 'opinions' and if you don't like it, leave stupid (fill in blank)" This "opinions" that they would speak of are not opinions, they are racist and hateful comments. Why can't people realize what they are saying are very hateful and have some effect on people? People around the world will not only see Americans as powerful and strong, but they will see us as a nation divided. People shouldn't make this election about race but when I get hurt by people's comments, what am I supposed to do? (You say Ignore it) Don't you think I've tried?!

..that you'll be hearing from others, they are scared and afraid of change. The majority of Americans are happy with the outcome of the election and from what I am seeing, the world is filled with hope as well, that the U.S.A. is again, back on track.

"I also mentioned that I think Obama will make this country a better place and a role model for other countries."

People ask how Obama will change our country?

He already has.

Life is what you make of it, didn't your Mother's ever tell y'all that. To read all this bickering, nitpicking(sorry nitpicker) on these blogs is very ummm, sad, really. I can understand venting some, but we are all Americans no matter, black, white, green with purple stripes, we are Americans.

I look at this election as a baseball game, there are two teams, the other team is up to bat now, that is all. The thrill is there for whoever the winner is but usually all or at least most at the game enjoy it no matter who wins. I'm just glad we have at least two teams to play. What would we have if we didn't have two parties, maybe a dictatorship, who knows...

Life isn't perfect, there will be bumps in the roads of Life. Like Forests Gump's Mother told Forest, "Life's a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get"...

President Elect Obama is going to have a rough road ahead and he is going to need all the help he can get and I for one am going to do my part by being a good citizen. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism but all this racist talk needs to stop. We as Americans need to rise above all this kind of talk, we need to be one for the good of all of us. United we stand, divided we fall.

You have a right to your opinions and the rest of us have a right to our opinions. That really is what makes this country great. These are the freedoms that many of our soldiers fought for.

My grandparents escaped from nazi Germany. They came here with a suicase and they were happy to be here. They were proud to be LEGAL citizens of this country and pay taxes. I do not refer to myself as a German-American. I am an AMERICAN!!

Unless you and your family just immigrated here from Africa you are an AMERICAN first. The zebras and the lions at the zoo are more African than you are. You are an American black. I am an American white. I think it is hard for everyone in this country to forget race and move on when on particluar group of people will not let it go. I know that it is trendy for American blacks to identify with another country, but I think it is wrong. I also think this trend is what still causes the great divide we have in this country. I live next to people who have in the last 10yrs come here to America from other countries. They came legally. One family is from Japan and the other from Mexico. They do not refer to their homeland. They describe themselves as Americans and they seem very proud of it.

American blacks still use race to get whatever they want. They use throught affirmative action to get jobs they may, or may not have gotten without it. They use affirmative action to get into schools that they may, or may not have gotten into without it. I have only lived in Atlanta for the last 18 going on 19yrs. I have been appalled and astouded by our evening news. Almost everytime an American black is arrested or caught doing something wrong they play the "race card". People in this city and where I work play the "race card" probably more than they change their undewear. I think this is what brings about the disgust and the anger that you saw on the other blog site. People won't forget about or leave race alone until American blacks do leave it alone. I'm not saying forget your heritage, no one should forget their heritage. I'm saying if you forgot about your race and just became AMERICANS like the rest of us it would go a long way towards healing this country.

I can tell you I really didn't know what the "race card" was until I moved here. I am disgusted by it, and angered by it when it is falsely or wrongly used. First of all when people over use and abuse the "race card" it diminishes the value of people who may actually still be experiencing true racism. I and many other people now turn a deaf ear when we hear cries of racism. It has been used and abused so much in my work place that we don't give it any credibilty or attention. I'll give you a couple of examples to ponder to try to explain to you where the anger and disgust is coming from.

First in the past 5 or so years at my work place we have had several trainees who were not doing well and were probably going to be let go. All of a sudden they reported that they had been receiving threatening racist notes. Huh?, Through security investigation and watching several security tapes from around the building and handwriting samples it was determined that they had sent the "threatening notes" to themselves. Not cool.!! There is a situation right now where a certain individual who has attempted to play the "card" in the past has now been AWOL for at least 2 weeks. The rumor is because the said individual is in jail. Who knows. I can just imagine what the poor cop went through that arrested this rabid racist. "you can't arrest me I'm black, can't you see I'm black" Yeah , I bet that is exactly how it went. Anyway this is the kind of stuff that makes people angry.

One more thing Iran did endorse Obama which also makes me nervous. They said he would be "easier to work with". Not good.

I think the divide is great in this country. I don't think there are any easy answers. I think a big first step would be for all of us to take pride in our country, and to take pride in working hard for a living. America only works when we all work for a living. I do reject anything that smacks of socialism. I see Obama's policies as socialism and apparently I'm not the only one who sees that. I do like the idea of making rich people pay their fair share, but I think the only way to do that is with the fair tax. As our tax system stands right now the rich people will just get their tax attorneys to find more loop holes so they won't have to pay the higher taxes. Under the fair tax plan everytime they bought a new BMW they would have to pay a tax and no tax attorney would be able to get them out of it. As our tax system stands right now you and I and every other middle class person is still getting stuck with the bill because we can't afford to hire someone to get us out of it. That is why I didn't vote for Obama. I don't like socialism.

Get outside today, it will cheer you up. It should be the perfect fall day.

My grandparents escaped from nazi Germany. They came here with a suicase and they were happy to be here. They were proud to be LEGAL citizens of this country and pay taxes. I do not refer to myself as a German-American. I am an AMERICAN!!

My great-grandparents were slaves. I never heard that they were happy to be here - but they were fortunate enough to belong to persons who allowed them to learn to read. They were identified in the south and in the north as 'blacks'/Negros/ colored. There were laws that prevented them from enjoying the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of American citizenship. My grandmother marched with the suffragettes although she would not be allowed to vote because of the color of her skin. She and all the members of my family have been identified as a hyphenated American by custom and law. We did not 'self-identify'.

When I was in Germany, I was identified as an American. Here in my country, The United States of America, I have always been identified by the color of my skin. Your relatives, even though they were from a 'foreign' land, were identified by the color of their skin - white.

You are entitled to your opinion based on your background and experience - but don't denigrate my opinion because my background and experience in 'our' country is different from yours.

LOL! We're not blind. We are just becoming appreciative of our individual expression of Americanism. We come in different shapes, sizes, colors, and opinions. No one has missed that the past 43 presidents have been 'white'. That's not playing a 'race' card - which has a negative connotation - it's just the way it is. Our 44th President is 'black' - he's still an American who like all the rest, has worked hard to prepare himself for this awesome job. As he said, he can't tackle our problems alone - he needs our help. . . all of us, not just those who voted for him. I am still so impressed with McCain's graciousness. He is truly an American hero - and role model.

Was the first bi-racial, mixed race or black president.

New York Times April 6 2008

"If the notorious historian William Estabrook Chancellor was correct we have already had a bi-racial President"

The article goes on to explain that once Harding took office he denied the claims in Chancellors book. The book went out of print only a few copies exist. In Chancellors book he sited statments from neighbors of the Harding family and also Harding's own father-in-law. The claim is that Harding was the great grandson of a black woman.

Warren Harding served our country from 1921-1923 his term was cut short by his death.

This man helped our country recover from WW1 and the recession that was very reminiscent of what we are going through right now. Read his inagural address and his first and second state of the union addresses. Very interesting. I think his decisions on policy and the role the Federal Gov. should play in private industry kept the country out of a full blown depression. That would come 7yrs. later.

Our country didn't shrivel up and die then, I think we will do just fine now......as long he drops the socialism thing ....

I'm not denigrating your opinion.

I'm saying we can't be healed unless we are all identified as Americans together.

Everyone has a different story of how they got here. We also have different stories of our experiences now that we are here.

How are we all going to work together as a people and as a nation to remain the best country on earth? I don't have any easy answers, and the sad thing is I think we have become more divided over the years.

Thanks for your time. I hope you were able to enjoy this great day.

Submitted by Davids mom on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 5:56pm.

With yesterday's election, the healing has started. Americans elected Obama - not white, black, conservative, liberal, right, left.. . but AMERICANS! The young people who worked so hard in the campaign didn't pay any attention to who was working next to them. They were Americans - working together to reach their goal. The streets were filled with citizens who were swelled with pride and joy. How are we going to work together? BY DOING IT!! Will it be easy? Of course not - but let's begin by learning how to disagree without denigrating or putting down one another's experiences. You and I have started - and so can others. I continue to enjoy this 'day' that I never thought would be realized in my lifetime. OH HAPPY DAY!!

I will give Obama the same respect that the left gave Bush. Most liberals i.e. Pelosi, Reid, et. al. think that working with conservatives means getting them to vote their way, not compromise. They will steam roll their agenda through Congress and the only thing that can stop them is the filibuster. This is the beginning of Chicago style politics in our nations capitol. Remember the vitriol from the left after the 2000 election. That was a great example of how they want to work together. They only want to work together when they are in charge and make the rules. They are lies, DAM_ lies!

Tom Delay, alias the "Hammer" rammed legislation through the house of representatives and bragged that he had ignored any Democrat's amendments.
Newt Gingrich, who wrote a book on how to label ones political enemies as un-American and weak.
George Bush, who promised to be a uniter but would not invite democrats to the White House to discuss policy.
The arrogance of the Republican party in the first Bush administration was beyond compare.
A new day is here. Barrack Obama will not solve all America's or the world's problems but he will unite us in an effort to solve them.

Sour grapes, amigo? Was there a problem in 2000 with the complete control of Washington by the GOP which lasted until 2006? Hmmmm? When a president pokes his chest out and says "You're either with us or against us," there lies the risk of people being "against" him. I don't see Barack playing cowboy. Never been his style.

Great way to start the healing process. (NOT) Let's see what happens. We've seen what happens with a group of leaders who cannot compromise and do what's best for our country - but rather do what they think is politically expedient. We're (the country) tired of Rove-style politics (which is very similar to Chicago style politics). Let's savor the 'togetherness' that is felt now among many Americans. It's obvious that you will have some difficulty doing this. I think you are in a minority at this time. There are MANY who want to see this country become united in purpose. The vitriol expressed towards one another and the rest of world has not served us well.

aliquando's picture
Submitted by aliquando on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 8:34pm.

My point is that the Left demonized Bush from the get go. If the left was not willing to compromise and get along with the President, why should the right give the next one anything but the same treatment? Their idea of "working together" when they are in power is following the rules laid down by Pelosi and Reid. They want the conservatives to sit next to them like a good dog and behave. Bush and the republicans did many things that were compromises. They passed No child left behind(Bush and Ted " the swimmer" Kennedy's bill. They gave Seniors the prescription drug program. They did not act like conservatives. Do not preach to me about working together when your side of the table never did!

aliquando's picture
Submitted by aliquando on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 9:21pm.

I do not either, my point is what is the definition of working together. What "bone" will be thrown to the conservatives? If it is a cabinet position for Lugar, he is not a conservative. I would be dismayed if there was a true "reaching out" to the right by the new administration. His choice for chief of staff was quoted as saying" Republicans can go F___ themselves". That is a great start to getting along. Why did the left not get over Clinton bashing for the last eight years? When you ask me to lower my defenses when all you have done is attack I say you first!

Iran did not endorse Obama. Saying that he would be "easier to work with" than the Bush administration would apply to every country in the world.

But anyway, interesting things are happening in Iran right now. Last week, Parliament dismissed Ali Kordan, the interior minister, on charges of dishonesty for faking a PhD. from Oxford. This was a serious blow to President Ahmadinejad and reflects a growing dissatisfaction with his rule. Worse, the vote for Kordan's dismissal (188 voted to fire Kordan, 45 voted against) was broadcast live on radio adding to Ahmadinejad's humiliation. For several days a fake resignation letter full of misprints and crossings-out, reportedly written by Kordan, was being passed around making him a national laughing stock. None of this would have happened if Ahmadinejad had not been seriously undermined politically. Even 18 months ago it would have been unthinkable.

Kordan's dismissal is especially important because he was one of Ahmadinejad's top people and his ministry is in charge of the next July elections when Ahmadinejad is running for reelection.

Opposition groups are trying to get Mohammad Khatami to run against him and are (ironically) portraying Ahmadinejad as the “Iranian Bush”, controlled by the most fundamentalist wing of the conservative camp, overly militaristic and leading the economy to wreckage (last week the Tehran stock market plunged 12%, inflation is estimated at 27% or more, massive deficits are being incurred because oil is at $63 and the economy is geared for oil at $100).

Could it be that Ahmadinejad will lose the June election? It'll be interesting. Let us hope.

Were you expecting anything different?"

That was election day, Skyspy? How could you forget your very own FOCUS ON RACE of a suspect? You are pathetic skyspy. Absolutely pathetic. You, OF ALL PEOPLE, are going to try to lecture someone on using race inappropriately? You, the one who brought "rag heads" to the boards as the racial slur de jour?

You, the person who attempted to scold a pilot writing a letter on traffic safety, as to him having diminished credibility (in your short sited eyes) because he had a traffic ticket????? But you, the black crime racial demographic tracker, are going to try to tell this young man that only YOU can use race to his disadvantage? How dare he be offended by someone calling him an N word? Are you kidding me?

"People in this city and where I work play the "race card" probably more than they change their undewear. "

Skyspy, I imagine some folks use racial slurs about as often as they dye their gray roots blond, but you don't see us trying to apply that to the entire white population. Oh, you have examples of people using the race card. Well, must apply to all of 'em, right? Typical black people. Oh, but wait, you are not a big fan of labeling people "typical," right? But, gee, that's what you are doing to blacks around these parts. Now I'm really confused.

The fact that you can't see your glaring hypocrisy tells me that your problems may be much more than superficial!

Good luck with that, and spare us the racial high ground lectures, less a "rag head" or "black wallet theft suspect" get mixed signals from you.

ps: Pure comedy that you are worried about Iran's opinion of Obama. I'm sure Al Qaeda saying John McCain would be their candidate of choice didn't phase your sloped forehead at all, did it? My response to the crime report was pretty mild. So far the increased crime here has been perpetrated mostly by one demographic. With the exception of the pedophiles of course. Yes, I know in divaville crime stats. are racist.

You have some serious issues. Please get help. Contrary to what you believe there is not racism around every corner. Take your anger out in the ring.
All you have done with this, and your attacks on others is reinforce the negative stereotype of the raging out of control black person. Please get help. In no way did I suggest that this young man should have to put up someone calling him a racial slur. There is anger on both sides of these issues. Some justified some not. Your out of control anger hurts you more than it hurts anyone else. Maybe using this blog as a tool to vent helps you. Whatever.....

Skyspy, I fully understand why you view someone confronting you with your own words as "bullying." And, yes, in my personal life, when the pot looks across the stove and says, "Hey kettle, you're black," I usually say, "Hey pot! Look at yourself in this mirror. What do you see?"

For instance, this was you moments ago:

"Save your little angry black man chip for people who will bow down to your name calling tantrums."

But THIS was you earlier today:

"I'm saying if you forgot about your race and just became AMERICANS like the rest of us it would go a long way towards healing this country."

Hmmm. Fight with yourself much?

You say you didn't tell this young man he had to tolerate the racial slurs? Skyspy, you blamed HIM for those slurs when you wrote this:

"I know that it is trendy for American blacks to identify with another country, but I think it is wrong. I also think this trend is what still causes the great divide we have in this country."

As for your last couple of sentences, I encourage you to read them aloud to yourself. Maybe read them twice.

"You have some serious issues. Please get help."

"your out of control anger hurts you more than it hurts anyone else. Maybe using this blog as a tool to vent helps you. Whatever....."

ps. North Carolina just went Socialist Shocked

Skyspy, that was so well put! I've tried and tried to put into words what you just did so eloquently about Americans just being Americans. Do the black people in Germany call themselves African-Germans? What about African-Australians? Africa has white people too, so get over yourselves. This African dash business is ridiculous. I've noticed that Obama is being called the first black president. Not African-American. That has been refreshing, if unnecessary.
