Education SPLOST, Smola win; PTC ice rink sinks; Fayetteville OKs Sunday alcohol drink sales
Ruppenthal holds off challenger by narrow margin in magistrate race; White defends magistrate seat over Thompson

With all precincts reporting tonight, the education SPLOST passed by 1,212 votes; the Peachtree City recreation bond was defeated with 62.47 percent voting no and Fayetteville will get Sunday alcohol by the drink sales by a 58-41 margin.

- Janet Smola defeated write-in candidate Nicole File with 88.47 percent of the vote.

- Incumbent Robert Ruppenthal narrowly held off Post 3 magistrate challenger Sheila S. Huddleston; Ruppenthal won by 651 votes with 50.66 percent of the votes.

- Incumbent James A. White won with 53.53 percent over challenger Jason B. Thompson.

- John McCain won Fayette County with 64.73 percent of the vote compared to 34 percent for Barack Obama in the presidential race.

- Incumbent Saxby Chambliss had 61.94 percent lead in Fayette County over his opponent, Jim Martin, for the U.S. Senate race.

- Incumbent Ronnie Chance had 73.8 percent of the vote in Fayette County over challenger Jerry Brillant for the Ga. Senate District 16 race.

- Incumbent U.S. Congressman Lynn Westmoreland won Fayette County with 67.14 percent with a lead over challenger Stephen Camp.

These results are not finalized as the elections officials need to investigate provisional ballots filed and also scanned paper absentee ballots that were rejected by the machine. The wait also gives more time for absentee ballots from overseas military members to arrive.

It is expected that the election will be certified Friday afternoon.

America is still as ideologically and racially split today as it was eight years ago. Call me a pessimist, but I see no improvement in the offing for the new administration than I did for the current one. While I'm glad I lived to see this nation move past its fixation on whether or not a person of color be elected to the highest office in the land, I've yet to hear any real solutions how we fix US. This is one time I hope I'm proved wrong.

Cal, I'm pretty sure that 12% Write-In Votes
for our Post 1 School Board position(5,149)
has got to be unprecedented in Fayette county.

Nicole File ran a good race, raised the right
questions and hopefully, raised awareness
in our county.

Janet - - watch out. Though it's nearly
impossible to oust a Republican due to the
crazy summer primary process here, we are going
to unseat you eventually!!

Fayette county - - - pay attention to your
school board issues. They impact your children,
grandchildren and property values!!

Huge win for Janet Smola. For a while I was worried due to all the negative messages from SUGGARFOOT etc. But Janet kept telling the truth to those who would listen and the BOE can now continue to work for excellence in the the school system.

It wasn't ...truth...that got your soul mate elected...it was ..punch down the left for republican...

But..OF THOSE BLIND ZOMBIES PUNCHING STRAIGHT REPUBLICAN, THE SIGHT OF SMOLA'S NAME CAUSED SOME TO COME OUT OF THEIR STUPOR FOR A MOMENT...

INDEED..OF ALL in office...SMOLA GOT THE LEAST VOTES!!

I think that the "Little Rebel" Nicole, has found an army. I'm proud of her.

Smola can't keep relying on voter stupidity or big donations...Big dogs are watching...If was her, I wouldn't want that pressure. 7 years is a long long time.

This may be the most shameful thing I have ever seen as far as Fayette county kids...someone should call DFACS on everyone that voted for Smola.

Swac says Janet Smola won because she kept telling the truth. Are you serious??? How about the fact her opponent didn't appear on the ballot???

The ESPLOST only wins by 1,200. Maybe so many people voted against it because Janet Smola kept telling the truth.

Behaving badly isn't a trait I look for in school board members. Smola's low financial IQ has accounted for a whole heap of problems.

Vote Republican

I am merely a pragmatist. Write in candidacies never work. They don't work because of a normal lack of visibility and a hassle to remember and extra steps to vote. One cannot say that File had a lack of visibility. It was the best write in campaign that I have ever seen.

Why couldn't see have run an effective primary campaign to unseat Smola? That is the source of her election failure. It is laughable to think that a 12% vote against a sitting board member would give them any pause to think any differently than they do.
You are deluding yourself to think otherwise. On that analysis, I am much less ignorant than you.

Submitted by swac on Wed, 11/05/2008 - 1:32pm.

Sorry about the Jerk bit but you did call me ignorant.
I did not say Janet won because she told the truth. I said she told the truth about the cost and policies needed to continue excellence in the school system.
ESPLOST won because Fayette County residents want to retain superior schools for their children and grandchildren.

Smola + stupidity + $ = smart middle class kids in Fayette county

we all know that

middle class kids + parents that work with their kids + good teachers = kids that can't make it without SMOLA INTERVENTION!!!

Give us a break swac!!! The ESPLOST won because the FCBOE kept scaring parents into thinking their schools would fail.

Janet Smola has wasted more money than some small systems take in. She didn't tell the truth on the school capacity issue, that's for sure.

Smola gets a salary of $500.00 a month, no kids in school, no vested interest, but she still wants to stay and call the shots...oh my bad...
Her kid, right out of college, went to the head of the line for BOE jobs..I bet there may have been a lot of experienced applicants that should have been interviewed first. I'm sick of people on the BOE having special privileges and the rest don't. Smith and Sweat's kids get to pick schools out of their area to go to, Smola's, with no experience, gets a job at one of the better schools.
I don't want anyone to say I shouldn't mention..their..kids...because after all it is about ...our...kids too, and special privileges for the BOE's and not ours.
...sick sick sick!

Let's face it. If Obama won with 88% of the vote, they would call that an overwhelming mandate and beat into the ground that the "people" have spoken. A 12% success rate is not a good job. Lets get it right and have a good fight in the primary where it matters. And lets have more than 35% particpation in off year elections.

Submitted by camconcay on Tue, 11/04/2008 - 11:59pm.

I am astounded that "we" (in quotes as I did NOT vote yes) voted FOR a tax increase. I do not care how they couch it (it's for the kids or we will have to cut so many programs etc etc) the esplost is a tax increase. It will NOT affect those outside the county more than those of us that live here like "they" kept saying (one article had a school board member thrilled to count a few out of county car tags at the avenues one afternoon - failing to mention the HUNDREDS of Fayette county cars and golf carts).

It does come on the heels of a huge bond "we" agreed to pay for to build new schools (one of which was built where there weren't any kids to fill it but no worries, we suddenly need to close a school that we just spent millions on renovating but that's another sad tale).

There is little to no accounting for where all the money is going NOW - and "we" agreed to give them more. I see on the front page that our school board has decided to make things even more secrative and harder for us to find out what's going on - nice. I also see all the incumbent school board members up for re-election were resoundingly re-elected so I guess this rant (although making me feel a bit better) is falling on deaf ears. Note the few write in candidates - the one named None Above is my write in as there were only two choices for the school board races - incubment and write in.

If the school board and those in charge of the money we send to the county for education would guarantee in writing that EVERY penny of the new esplost went directly to TEACHERS pay I would campaign for at least a 1% sales TAX increase and be glad it passed. With most of us not having any idea where most of the money goes, the board making it nearly impossible to find out, and sadly most of "us" not caring at all (I care) I guess it's business as usual in Fayette County.

Submitted by TyroneTerror on Wed, 11/05/2008 - 12:05pm.

Its a penny, one solitary penny on each dollar. So now instead of it costing me $1.06 it costs me $1.07. People Get Over it. You pay that penny when you shop anywhere in surrounding counties to support their schools, why shouldn't they pay to support ours? I also voted for it because even the Illegals clogging up our schools, living in rental homes and not paying property taxes, will contribute towards our schools. Not to mention the Section 8 housing people that do the same. Its about time they paid for something.

Spear Road Guy's picture
Submitted by Spear Road Guy on Wed, 11/05/2008 - 12:19pm.

Go look at all of your tax bills TyroneTerror. Keep in mind they acculated over time because fools like you kept saying it's just a small amount and it won't matter.

Meanwhile, the school board just keeps throwing good money down the toilet because there's nothing to stop them because fools like you keep says the increases are just small amounts of money.

When is it enough TyroneTerror?

Why not throw in another $15 a month for Dar Thompson's ice rink and fitness center? It's just money? Hey you can come up with another reason to tax us next year.

Vote Republican

Don't call me a Slob or Fool. Our current school board may not be the best, but they are what we have. Vote them out next chance you get or better yet, Why don't you run if you can do better? Oh Please run and Save us oh Mighty "Spear Road Guy".

Have you ever been somewhere where the school board was REALLY bad? Would you rather have Clayton's school board? How about a school system where the board was so incompetent they gave the state $80,000,000 back rather than build a Comprehensive High School and Hire quality teachers that would have better served the students of the county. Now that County has CRCT,SAT, and ACT scores in the Bottom %5 percent of Georgia. I have been there and its no fun.

Am I against raising taxesasa a whole, sure I am, but I have a brain and can pick and choose the ones I want to support.

I just love the way the friends of the FCBOE dumb-down the argument to make our nuts in charge look better.

TyroneTerror compares us to Clayton County’s school system and says look how lucky we are. If TyroneTerror gave me $30,000 for a car and I gave her a piece of junk worth $5,000, all I would have to do is point to the junk yard in Clayton County and say look at those cars. They don’t even run. See how lucky you are!!!

What a sorry argument.

Hey, I tip my hat to Mike King for running for office! We needed someone to stand up to Harold Logsdon and I'm sorry you didn't get in.

First on our new president's agenda will be to declare open immigration to the US from all African nations. This will eliminate hunger in Africa by letting all who work in the US pay more taxes for welfare. It will also guarantee the Messiah's reelection in 2012. Next immigration from Europe will be stopped as a fair and balanced immigration policy. Second, all minorities will be given a federal government job until 2040 when whites will become the minority. If my forefathers had known we'd end up with a black pres., they would have picked their own cotton.

The great lesson learned tonight - Americans are participating in the process and making their voice heard.. . . and the new kids on the block have made their voice heard. Change is here. Regardless of the fears of some on this blog, the new president has brought together a diverse group of Americans who are willing and able to work with him and our elected leaders to help restore our economy and our standing in the world. The Republicans brought this on themselves. Where was the party for small government the last four eight years? The Party was too rapped up in in spending pork with a President that grew government at an unheard of rate. The country is suffering from Republican greed on Wall Street AND Democratic vote buying for uncreditworthy housing loans through Fanny Mae and Feddy Mac. I don't have a litmus test about abortion or many other supposed conservative requirement. I just want taxes appropriate to the common good (infrastructure, schools, fire, police, and the military); a nation of laws; and decisions made at the state and local level. Neither Senator McCain or President Elect O'Bama met those requirements. While I congratulate President Elect O'Bama and his supporters, Georgia and Fayette County both remain conservative. Smaller government with fiscal discipline will never go out of style at the local level.
