FreeSpeech for 11-05-08Tue, 11/04/2008 - 4:53pm
By: The Citizen
Why for the last two years do a few city employees continue to try and force the citizens of Peachtree City into a contract with one provider for curbside pick up? We do not want this; we will not have our freedom of choice taken away not even for our trash pickup. We are adults capable of making our own decisions. Please investigate why these employees are wasting taxpayer dollars and time to keep pushing an already defeated proposition. How much of our time and money was wasted this year? Who is responsible for them and why are they out of control? What do they gain other than more power and control? When is enough, enough? We want to know. - - - - - - - - - - - Two tunnels and a bridge, all to accommodate golf carts and pedestrians. The two tunnels have been in place much longer than the bridge, and the bridge has been in place for almost two years. All that has been needed is three short sections of cart paths to connect to the bridge. The fourth path section, on the west side of the bridge, was completed prior to the bridge installation, complete with paved path, and landscaping. You can drive through the tunnel, in hopes of connecting to Huddleston Road, but the owners of what appears to be a landscaping business, on the east side of Huddleston Road, have blocked the dirt path that had been made by cart drivers. And these property owners standing in the way of this project are all akin to Wall Street CEOs. The second section of cart path is on property that was owned by owners of The Avenue, according to The Citizen (Oct. 22, 2008). The Citizen stated that PTC had offered those people $14,420 for the property, based on property appraisal, and The Avenue owners, Cousins Properties, countered with an offer five times the amount that PTC had offered. I believe that no other offer to buy that property would have ever been made, to Cousins Properties, unless someone wanted to put up a lemonade stand. It is bordered on two sides by the railroad tracks and Ga. Highway 54, and the other side by Books A Million parking lot, and several large hardwood trees that Cousins Properties could probably care less about. And now that Cousins Properties has sold the property to PTC, give thought to the other end of this tunnel: it goes directly into Ethan Allen parking lot. Is their home address also Wall Street USA? Just sign me, “a golf cart driver.” - - - - - - - - - - - Early voting on Monday started out to be a wonderful and rewarding experience. The lines apparently started forming before 8 a.m. By 8:15, the lines had grown and everyone settled in for a wait. The group seemed to be very friendly and many comments were made about how great it was to have so many people vote in this election. Some read, others chatted quietly. It was a testament to what common sense and basic manners can do in what otherwise could have been a very unpleasant way to start out your week. Except for one man. This person had two iPods and had the sound on so we could all hear during most of the wait. He had it pointed out to him at least twice that his listening choice could be heard (loudly). Apparently he thought we all needed to be exposed to his questionable music taste and a political speech by one of the candidates. Isn’t there something about no campaigning within a certain distance of the voting areas? Most people in the line just looked at each other in disgust as this gentleman totally ignored the basic good manners required to stand in a line for a long period of time. After being asked to turn it down twice, I think people just gave up. I think some of us were afraid of being considered racist because most of us were white and he was not. That is ridiculous, but has become the world we live in. How very sad. - - - - - - - - - - - Does anybody know what are the functions of the park’s monitor? We have seen his car parked in front of the Glenloch Recreational Building many, many times. He never gets out of the car, the engine always running, stays for some time and then he leaves. How much do the taxpayers have to pay for this? - - - - - - - - - - - Kudos to science teacher Edinger in his, “Not just wealth” letter to the editor. What an absolutely perfect and simple example (by spreading the “highest” grades around) of why Obama’s plan is just downright unfair and undesirable. Unfortunately, though, the message couldn’t be any more clear, but get ready for the deluge of counterpoints supporting this kind of system. They’ll go something like this: “My child is not as gifted as others.” “This teacher has it out for my child.” “My child is involved in several sports and cannot afford the extra study time required in science.” “My child suffers from attention deficit disorder and is, therefore, at a greater disadvantage.” And the list goes on and on. With a few (diehard, but admirable) exceptions, the core principles of responsibility, accountability, and hard work have all but faded from the ethical fiber of this country. So, let’s face it: as long as the number of them continues to outpace the number of us, we’re in for a losing battle. - - - - - - - - - - - The Braelinn PTO president didn’t deserve to be trashed in the newspaper. She has served the school generously and her time and efforts have benefitted our school and children. If you had a problem with the email, the bigger thing to do would have been to contact her rather than anonymously attack her and the PTO, giving audience to the community. - - - - - - - - - - - The Braelinn PTO is a wonderful organization led by a dedicated, amazing president. We are so fortunate to have her and our children benefit greatly from her tireless efforts. If anyone does not want to receive her emails they could send her a civilized email requesting that they be removed from the list, or they could do what sane people do and delete the emails that do not interest them. Instead, someone sent a cowardly, bitter attack to Free Speech. It makes me sad that there is such an ungrateful, vicious person in our otherwise supportive and friendly school. - - - - - - - - - - - Is it just bad timing that, within two weeks of the Tyrone Council’s decision to scrap impact fees that would have funded a new police station, they “discover” mold and structural damage in the existing police station? Or is it part of Grace Caldwell’s master plan to eliminate Tyrone? Who now will have to pay the costs to correct these problems? Guess they must be looking for another reason to soak the taxpayers. They already are going to raise taxes to repay the developers for impact fees collected and now even higher taxes for this decision. Where is the accountability and fiscal responsibility they claimed they had? - - - - - - - - - - - The majority of conversations these days are about where our taxes are going and how the taxes will help the community and go towards the schools and the other areas of government. Presently, the Fayetteville Pavilion area is unsafe with the dangerous activities going on there, specifically reported at the movie theater. If the Pavilion does not get their act together and try to fix up the area and make it more safe for people to shop, the people are going to stop shopping there. And the people will start going to Newnan because it is a much nicer place. However the people from Fayette County shopping in Newnan are supporting Coweta County and not the county they live in, especially if the SPLOST is passed. Not to mention that if we go to Newnan the stores at the Fayetteville Pavilion will suffer. So after all the events that happen at the Pavilion it should be a wake-up call to them that they need to clean up the Pavilion so kids and other people are able to watch a movie or shop without the fear that something could go wrong. - - - - - - - - - - - All Fayette County citizens need to check their mailboxes for the special package to be delivered after the Nov. 4 election. The Fayette County Board of Education is going to be sending your own nose ring that is customized to accept their tailored leash. You see, a small but powerful and well-connected group in this county, among them number the Fayette County Board of Realtors, all Fayette County educators and employees and our elected officials, have been pushing for this tax increase, regardless of whether or not we actually need it. As tax revenues are down across the state and everyone is having to make do with a little less, this porky group is not only wanting to maintain the status quo, they want to grow at the rate they’ve been growing. Never mind that attrition has thinned their ranks by 63 employees, they just pushed through their millage increase. They have prime acreage for sale next to Inman Elementary after that sweetheart deal. They have at least one elementary school more than they need. Now they want all of us to pay 1 percent more for every dollar we spend in our own community. You better ask yourselves who is paying for all of those ESPLOST signs and banners throughout the county and why, and why the ever-vigilant Fayette County marshals are leaving these signs alone. Yet they pull up every other one in sight. Look at the credibility issues that have surfaced at the Board of Education for everyone that is clamoring for this tax increase. Finally, and think about it, everyone who wants this tax increase is telling you it is necessary for maintaining our high standard of education, but they are not changing one thing in their budget to make this happen. They are counting on making it on the backs of the Fayette County citizens. They aren’t tightening their belts or getting non-Fayette County students out of our schools. Wake up and hold them accountable before you look around one day and wonder why we pay so much just to be mediocre. - - - - - - - - - - - Someone needs to inform the idiot driving the blue Lexus GX470 in High Grove that they put stop signs at intersections for a reason. You never slowed, you never looked, you just blew through the intersection and came within a couple of inches of having the side of your vehicle crushed. It’s a good thing one of us was paying attention to what was going on. - - - - - - - - - - - There is something terribly wrong with a system that allows one man to walk into a company, dismiss half the workers, freeing up the money that would have been paid in wages, and creating a false appearance of improving the company’s financial position. Then that one person takes all that freed-up money as his own compensation. Soon thereafter, the company goes bankrupt and that one person walks away with millions of dollars in separation pay as a thank-you for bankrupting the company. The workers then go home with no job and no retirement to eventually lose their home. That one person then goes to one of his million-dollar homes in Hawaii or in the mountains or on the coast or in Europe, or South America, etc., to plan and scheme for the next company he will loot. That one person is called a CEO. login to post comments |
