Former Rising Starr Middle School teacher and Senoia resident Craig Bowen was convicted Oct. 28 in Coweta Superior Court on four counts of child molestation. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 5 years probation. The 57 year-old social studies teacher was arrested April 12 on charges of aggravated sexual battery and child molestation. He was alleged to have had contact that was sexual in nature with a female relative under the age of 16 during the 2000-2003 time frame in question. The trial began Oct. 27 and ended in less than two days, with the jury returning with the guilty verdict after deliberating for approximately one and one-half hours. Assistant District Attorney Ray Mayer after the trial said Bowen had previously given a two-hour recorded statement in which he basically confessed, yet decided to continue with a jury trial. Bowen was sentenced to 20 years, with 15 of those to be served in prison and the remaining 5 years on probation. Superior Court Judge Jack Kirby presided at the trial. Bowen’s employment with Fayette County School System ended after charges were filed. login to post comments |
