Ice rink/sports complex will make PTC a more attractive place to live

My desire for an ice rink in Peachtree City transcends my use of ice skating as one of my own personal activities.

I have been an artistic skater for over 50 years and I’ve always been grateful for the presence of the business community and/or local government to build and maintain skating facilities for the public. It is a sport that can engage the body and mind of youngsters to octogenarians.

And who wouldn’t prefer that their children be involved in a sport such as skating rather than glued to their Nintendo or computers for hours on end? Skating can teach a young person the value of discipline and practice and build the strength and agility of their bodies as they grow.

This project offers us a unique opportunity to have such a facility at an auspicious time. The land is available and waiting (and it’s not being given to the facility operators).

Of the five ice rinks in the Atlanta metro area, there is no public rink south of Marietta, so a rink in Peachtree City would draw from the entire southern half of Atlanta.

Several thousand Northwest Airlines employees will be moving from Minnesota to the Atlanta area, an easy majority of whom are either hockey fans or players and would be delighted to live close to the airport and to a major ice rink complex.

A man I met at the Peachtree City Classic run said 500 of his company’s employees will be soon moving from Quebec to the Atlanta area and many of them will undoubtedly be ice skating fans, too.

The cost of this facility bond will be between $2 and $3 per month per household depending on the assessed value of your house. How many things can you think of that cost so little?

Very few; perhaps the cost of one Starbucks latté or a fast food burger, and that’s just one each, not per month. It’s certainly less than I spend on gas for driving 120 miles roundtrip to the Cooler in Alpharetta to ice skate. What a bargain this is.

Peachtree City is a desirable place to live and such a sports facility will make it even more so, drawing new residents here, which could help our property values to rise again to the historical values of 10-15 percent higher than the metro area.

Please vote “YES” on the Recreational Facilities Bond on Nov. 4. See The Citizen article, “PTC Rec Bond Vote” article in the 10/18/08 issue for more details.

All of the 'amenities', 'positive arguments' and 'benefits' of the ice rink will all still be there if the parties involved raise private money and build it themselves. If they truly believe in their own arguments, there is no reason for them not to build it. These are wealthy, successful business owners we are talking about. This city has much better ways to spend our money than building a facilty to be run by a private business group. Schools, additional policemen and firemen, improved infrastructure are just a few. As far it's success, there is a reason there are no ice rinks south of Marietta: they all closed. For those of you new to the city, we had a roller rink until a few years ago. It closed down and is now an autobody shop. If someone wants to risk their money, good luck to them. I hope it works out. I'm sure I'll patronize it if it's affordable and has something to offer. Just leave the taxpayers hard earned cash out of it.

I agree whole heartedly with MYTMITE. If this is such a good idea, let Mr. Thompson raise the money privately and charge admission.

Can you say Tennis Center???? We heard all these arguments re: the tennis center and where are we today? Paying off an undercover loan for a facility that hardly anyone uses. We have had ice skating rinks nearby before and they went belly up. As many of us have stated before, if this is such a wonderful idea Mr. Thompson should get a group of like minded business men (possibly you also?) to get the private funding for this. For some reason the $1+ to $2+ we keep reading about will grow and grow. No facility being built today ever meets the projected budget--and if this goes in the tank, who is left holding the bag or rather the debt? the citizens of Peachtree City. We keep hearing about all these groups of people who will soon be coming to our community and would love to have an ice skating rink. Sure, if you asked me there are lots of things I would love to have--you build it and I will come-- I would be happy to plunk down my admission fee to take my family to YOUR skating facility. Just don't ask me to pay for it. I'm too busy paying for a tennis center.
