Senate follows House approval

Georgia is getting a second crack at trying to stave off voter fraud now that Gov. Sonny Perdue has signed the latest voter ID bill.

The bill was approved earlier this week by the State Senate, following last week’s approval from the state House of Representatives.

The main difference between this year’s bill and last year’s version, which was struck down by a federal judge, is the creation of a special “voter ID” for persons who don’t already have a driver’s license or state-issued ID card.

The bill requires all county elections offices to create such photo IDs. That program is in response to the judge’s ruling that the previous voter ID legislation created a de facto “poll tax” since it costs money to get a driver’s license or ID card from the state.

Critics of the proposal say it is unfair to require voters to prove their identity with a photo identification, saying it will disenfranchise the poor and elderly. But the special “voter ID” card will be available free of charge, which should eliminate some of those concerns.

Sen. Ronnie Chance of Tyrone voted for the bill, as did Sen. Mitch Seabaugh of Sharpsburg.

It is unbeleivable to me that anyone can, with a straight face, oppose a bill that would require one to prove their identification before one can exercise this basic right in the USA.

The fact that someone opposes this only tells me that there may have been some massive voter fraud in the past to the benefit of the group that opposes the bill. To say that having a state issued driver's license or ID is a poll tax is a stretch at best. Now that the lawmakers have figured out a solution, what is the next objection to this.

I want to feel confident that the premise "one person, one vote" stands in Georgia! I only vote once, but (Horrors) I have voted each and every time the polls have opened since 1981.

Will someone tell me why a voter should not be required to prove their ID? I must prove it to fly, drive, bank, use a credit card and thankfully to vote!

Have a nice day and take your ID to the polls in March to vote for the Fayette County Commission open seat.

RIP Van!!!

The ones who holler the loudest about voter photo ID are the ones who have been benefitting from voter fraud all these years. I am amazed that we have not had to have photo ID long before now. Previously one of the forms of allowable ID was a statement from the voter that he or she was who he or she said they were. A self serving affirmation. Where else could you use such a statement? Oh, I know it works to get out of county students in Fayette County Schools.

Who in this day and age has no picture ID? How can anyone do any kind of business today without it. Cash checks, drive a car,get goverment benifits, young or old etc.. What is the problem with anyone proving who you are when voting? The new law will even provide free ID to those who can't afford them. If it is to much of a hardship to get a free ID,then It will be to hard for you to go vote. That is unless you are sending someone else to do it for you or someone else is voting in your place without your knowlege. Get real for honest voting!!!Most voter should not be alowed to vote because of their knowledge of the issues and records of whom their voting for anyway. At least we should know if you are who you say you are. Lets stop making Uncle Harry or Ant Mary look stupid because you are voting for them with or without their knowledge, just to get your person elected. Maybe we can get more quality people in office like Westmoreland, with proper and real IDs.

I don't know why you think Westmoreland is so great. There is not a nickels worth of difference between him and John Wieland. Also, Ant should be Aunt.....maybe that explains things.

As Dan Aykord would say, " Luella you ignorant sl--". (You get the idea and I will not stoop to the bathroom humor you used). It so happens that your spelling and grammar are on the 5th grade level. Why do you think you should correct someone on spelling which was probably just a typo. You don't know about typos yourself since you never proof read. Your signed off "Chow". Are you a dog or were you trying to say Ciao, which is Italian for goodbye? The majority of the people around here think that Westmoreland is doing a good job. Could you be sour grapes?

I feel you are...JEALOUS....! OH MY...WHERE IS YOUR GROUP OF COOL AID DRINKERS?... you may be grammaticly correct...but who cares?...unless you keep switching IDs ..and talking to yourself...you don't have a following... ...WHAT... you think, or say...doesn't matter, you can try to go head to head with Grace, but she won! The people spoke! and you can't stand it. We cool aid drinkers like her, she is honest, and the only thing you can do is ..speculate...as to what she ...might...do wrong....she won on a clear choice by the voters on ...FACTS... what your group has done...as opposed to what she and Gloria have done...and most importantly...lived by....suck it up...and shut up...you lost..and there is not a thing you can do about it....but vent and look stupid...oh guess what ....we all feel sorry for you....we will buy you a bigger dictionary, and you can look up bigger wordsssss? Is that ok? The idea is...it doens't matter the words, the meaning and idea are still the same no matter how you slice it....CHOW...Caeo... get the idea...YOU LOST...NOW YOU WILL HAVE TO PLAY IN THE REAL WORLD@!

A mis-spelled word does not explain anything. It only explains your lack of ability to define why you think Westmoreland is not a good Rep.. Maybe there is a polical difference, but that's a cheep shot. I'd be more specific if I were you or are you being potlical and taking the easy way out? I also pronounce the word aunt, not aunnnt! I don't know what aunnnt is?

I'm all for eliminating voter fraud. However, I hate to burst your bubble but there is far more voter fraud reported in absentee ballot voting than someone voting who isn't whom he/she claims to be. Don't believe me? In the 2004 general election here in Georgia, 20% of votes in 49 counties were cast by absentee ballot and those who mailed in their ballot were not required to verify their identity. According to the Federal Elections Commission, since 1999 there have been allegations of absentee ballot fraud in 13 counties here in Georgia. How many cases of voter identity fraud? A big fat zero!! Therefore, the question begs to be asked - why isn't the legislature tackling the real voter fraud issue - absentee ballot voting? As usual, the answer is politics. Absentee ballot voting occurs mostly with older voters, people who are not in town to vote on election day due to work or leisure as well as our citizens serving in the military, all groups who happen to vote overwhelming for Republicans. Now I can't say that I blame the Republicans for not addressing the problem (heck, why risk losing your core constituency!) but give me a break - all of this huffin' and puffin' about voter identity fraud due to no ID!! Smoke and mirror issue!

What you say is true, but you have not burst my bubble, you must accept the fact that this is the first step in stopping the abuse. The next step is to require a photo copy of valid ID with the absentee ballot. I don't care what it takes to stop voter fraud, fraud has to be done away with by both parties for honest elections to take place. I may not be in favor of the person who wins, but I need to be sure the win was honest, whatever it takes. There is no bias in wanting an honest election. I do question your proof that Republicans cast most absentee ballots. Democrats like to say that, but what factual proof do you have?
I've voted non Republican until the George W. Bush ran for president the second time. No president in my life time since I could vote for Harry Truman, ever cut my taxes. No President did what he said, and went after the people that attack our country where ever they are. I turned Republican as a whole. I don't like all that Bush is doing. He needs to do more for border security, and gas prices and helping the poor. But at least we know where he stands good or bad, and thats a step forward.
Back to the subject; You are right, stop all voter fraud!! Don't say one is no good without the other. Let's take another step and do away with absentee balot fraud! Why say what we are doing now,we should stop doing anything at all or blame any one party. Fraud is on both sides.Legal voting should be supported from both parties, and may the best person win.

I like voter ID even though it is just a political window-dressing issue. It makes it tougher on the lazy and stupid to vote and I'm all for that.

Guess you did not hear about the Cynthia McKinney race in DeKalb County or the fraud in Dodge County. Stopping that is not window dressing.
