Coweta schools will close Election Day due to expected heavy turn-outThu, 10/16/2008 - 3:55pm

Coweta County students will have the day off from school on election day, Tuesday, November 4. In September, the Coweta County Board of Education voted to request that the Georgia Board of Education waive the state’s 180-day student attendance rule for the general election date. The Coweta County school board made the request because state and local election agencies are predicting very high voter turn-out on November 4. In addition to heavy traffic expected throughout the day on November 4, nine of Coweta County’s schools and the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts are used as polling places. Superintendent Blake Bass informed Coweta County board members that the state board approved the request at their October board meeting in Atlanta. Students should not report to school on November 4. Teachers will report to school on that day as a regular workday. Faculty members at several schools used as polling places will report to separate worksites to allow for better parking for voters. School buildings used as voting places include Canongate, Jefferson Parkway, Northside, Thomas Crossroads and White Oak elementary schools, Madras and Smokey Road middle schools, the CentralEducational Center, and the Arts Center on Lower Fayetteville Road. The waiver of the “180-day” rule for student attendance is the same waiver granted when schools miss regularly-scheduled days due to snow or other inclement weather. The state does not require a missed day to be made up unless schools close for several such days during the school year. login to post comments |
