Gas crunch still hitting Fayette

Refinery production improving in Gulf, but only at half normal capacity; only 2 stations in Fayette out of gas at 1:30 today

Some gas stations in Fayette remain out of gas while others are selling gas with hardly any lines to speak of at lunchtime today.

That seems to be better than the media reports from metro Atlanta this weekend, with stories of multiple gas stations remaining dry and frustrated drivers unable to fill up at all. And the gas stations that did have product in the metro area had significantly long lines, according to televised reports.

The latest report from the U.S. Department of Energy states that oil refinery production is up to 3.6 million barrels a day. By comparison on Tuesday that production figure was 2.7 million a day.

Still that's just half of the normal production levels, with 3.7 million barrels of capacity still offline or being re-started.

Just three refineries remain completely shut down on the Gulf Coast, and another 13 are either restarting or running at a reduced capacity, while another 17 are running at full capacity, the report stated.

Louisiana oil production is still struggling, as just 37 percent of the state's normal oil production has been restored in the days following Hurricane Ike, the report indicated.

well, higher gas prices is not an issue today. way back then people were enjoying the high prices (suv accessories), until the consumption crashed.. cutting off the production and gas consumption. then some thought of cutting the driving habits too.

WOW!! All the way from Europe, we are not out of Sonny's mind. He has now called for the President to release 'oil reserves'!! Did some of his brain trusts from Fayette offer this idea to get the wolves off his back??? They need to tell Sonny that this is NOT AN OIL SHORTAGE! IT IS A REFINED PRODUCT SHORTAGE!! IT IS CALLED G A S O L I N E ...GASOLINE!!

Folks, you just can't make this stuff up. SNL material!!

And what would recommend Sonny do now? HE already had the EPA to lift the "low sulfur" rule on gas.

He's in a Catch 22...I think the best thing would be a limit of $40 bucks or so per vehicle, and/or let the free MARKET decide how much gas should be until this is over. I have neighbors who top off with 3/4 of a tank, and ride around looking for stations all the time (burning gas all day long). Some folks are just crazy.

I understand the topping off as you describe above - riding around looking for gas to top off the 3/4 tank is a no-no. Watching the local news last night - we have issues with cutters, swooping into the pumps and cutting in line is also a no-no. I certainly remember the 70's with odd-even rationing and hope we don't have to go there.

Would it be kosher to use a golf cart to search for gas and hold a place in the line? If the family car with only fumes is parked off to the side, turned off, waiting for their turn at the pump- could the electric GC hold the place in line?

What say you? Otherwise we are wasting gas to get gas!

Ah, I remember well the oil crunch while living in the bay area of California. Odd even days, finding a station with gas, long long lines, then waiting for 3,4 5 hours for gas with two little ones under 5 to entertain for that amount of time. My spouse drove 80 miles a day round trip to work and worked midnights, so I had no choice spouse had to have gas in the car and had to sleep so it was up to me to get the gas. What was amazing was how quick the shortage ended, overnight. After that we bought a diesel, amazing no lines for diesel fuel back then.

Speaking on oil, T Boone Pickens(oil Barron of TX) today said on MSNBC that Oil will be our next Catastrophe, to the tune of yep $700 Billion...We are seeing the beginnings of not having enough oil so we better come up with some alternatives very soon or we as a Nation won't have much of a future.

Don't call 911 if you run out of gas. Smiling

Just out and about the southside and Braelinn Kroger gas is closed. Neither of the stations at Crossgtown and 74 have premium and Pit Stop has no octane boost. Didn't go in Flash to check. Not planning to trade for a regular gas car or a hybrid. Can buy an awful lot of premium in lieu of car payments. Hopefully the couple gallons of regular I put in the other day won't cause the engine to fall out.

I have yet to hit full throttle on the parkway. I'll try it later to test your theory.

Someday there might only be regular produced as way to increase refinery capacity.

Guess that's the day I'll have to dig out the old two wheeler from the back of the garage and take it to the bike shop for it's long needed tune up. Might help me get tuned up a bit too. Or maybe some of my IRA will magically reappear before it hits zero and I can engage in one of my "favorite" pastimes, car shopping.
