Goodwill coming to F’ville?

What Peachtree City didn’t want, Fayetteville may get — willingly.

A proposed Goodwill store and career center could add more than 60 jobs to the county, along with providing a career center for prospective employees.

“In this economy, every job counts,” said Fayette County Development Authority Director Matt Forshee.

It was almost exactly one year ago when news of a Goodwill store replacing the Kroger supermarket in the heart of Peachtree City precipitated a near uprising by city residents against the change. Kroger reconsidered its closure of the supermarket and Goodwill said it would look elsewhere.

That elsewhere is Fayetteville.

The new building would be located behind Picadilly Cafeteria on north Ga. Highway 85 and would be 25,000 square feet.

Ironically, the location is directly across the highway from another Kroger supermarket.

In addition to adding a retail location, the career center would offer prospective employees tips on creating resumes and interviewing skills.

“There’s a similar center located in Macon that has a five-star restaurant attached to it. Students can study culinary arts and then move into the restaurant,” said Forshee.

The Development Authority is involved in the process because it is being used as a conduit for $5.1 million in bonds to build the facility.

Forshee added the average salary of the workers is expected to be around $35,000. The Development Authority will hold a public hearing on the issuing of the bonds Sept. 29 at noon in its courthouse offices.

Contacted Monday, Fayetteville Planning & Zoning Director Eldridge Gunn said Goodwill representatives have been talking and working with city staff and could submit development plans for the November meeting.

Goodwill is going to spend $5.1 million on a store. Do you honestly think it's going to be some blight on the city????

The large majority of the benefit of this Goodwill will undoubtedly be for Clayton County. Do we really need to attract MORE of this classy county down to our hurting hometown?

This is a stupid idea. At the very VERY least, but it in an already built building. With all the strip malls going up and existing ones at 40% occupancy, it would seem as if Fayetteville is going for the award for "Most Vacant Storefronts"

Honestly, this will put a permanent symbol of decline in the middle of Fayetteville.

I am willing to put some effort towards stopping this.

I wouldn't be dissing Goodwill right now. After all, Goodwill may be the only place we can afford to shop soon, once the government is finished dismantling and socializing everything.

Soup lines for all.

Thats what you dems want.....remember???

All of the great gov. run programs like welfare, food stamps, free medical care.....you know the cornerstone of what every DIMocrate loves.?? Entitlement programs. Fannie/Freddie giving away mortgages to people without jobs, just because they fill in the race box correctly.( the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act) Sure you remember now?

Remember how your false god promised to tax the "windfall" profits of corporations to the point where they all move overseas?? The kicker is they will take American jobs with them. Sure you remember....how we need "universal no-health care" and everyone gets to pay for the people who can't, because they don't want to work?? It's all coming back to you now isn't it??

I have to vote Republican because we can't all be on welfare.

Boy, the fact that about 1.5 million blacks, and 4.5 million whites are on welfare has made you ill, hasn't it?

Where would you suggest they work and will you keep the kids?

I don't care about who is receiving welfare or any of the other entitlement programs. The point is none of those programs were intended to be a way of life.

Since the Gov is passing out all this money, I wonder when we will get ours.

You know the people in the middle just get to work harder.

As soon as the dow goes back up over 11 I'm going to shift money over to euro markets. I saw one rate on a swiss CD of 10.49%. Anyway, I think we will all survive this too. I just won't be able to retire when I thought I would be able to.

Can't this Goodwill/Career Center go in where the Food Depot shopping center is? It is already there and is falling apart. There is even already a good restaurant location sitting empty there.

Don't build more more more! Use what we already have!!

Did anyone else smell something fishy when they mentioned that the average salary was $35,000?????

Also, isn't there is a good chance that Goodwill will employ more Clayton County residents than Fayette given their proposed location?

This isn't really about Goodwill being good for the county, this is about the county being good for Goodwill.

Maybe it's just me, but do we really want a Goodwill here? Any comments?
