City may hire manager to run venue, take control from Tourism Association

Tourism board asks city to manage venue so it can focus on tourism goals

After hearing more than a dozen comments from amphitheater patrons, the Peachtree City Council directed staff to work towards resuming control of the city's amphitheater, currently operated by the city's tourism association.

City staff was asked to prepare a plan to hire an amphitheater manager in the near future. The association's chairman said the board also wants the city to resume management of the facility.

Mayor Harold Logsdon and Councilwoman Cyndi Plunkett agreed that any plan to change the management of the amphitheater should include consideration of how to best handle patron seating requests for season ticket holders.

If the amphitheater goes from its current concert schedule of two nights to one night, the city will have to figure out how to please season ticket holders because some, if not many, will have to be assigned different seats.

One resident said she preferred to go to concerts on Friday nights because she attends Auburn football games on Saturdays in the early fall.

I can only speak for our household, but I suspect many other former season ticket holders felt the same; the 40% jump in ticket prices from 2007 to 2008 was ill timed and too large an increase given the economy. How could they think this wouldn't affect renewals?? And now PTC is considering raising ticket prices further as a way to solve the current problems?.... Major acts are cutting ticket prices to help fill venues and cancelling shows when even that doesn't work and PTC wants to raise ticket prices again? I'm sorry, that just doesn't make sense.

In fairness to Ms. Yawn, she did do a better job running the amphitheater then the guy before her. She has good people skills. However it takes more then good people skills to run an Amphitheater. When you're only half-fill for concerts that should tell you that you are not bring in acts that people want to see. What is the point of doing a survey every year when you're not going to bring in the bands that people want to see?

Maybe who ever is responsible for the golf cart bridge by Best Buy could be in charge of the venue........ UNBELIVABLE.

Sell it and let a private company manage it. Government is not the answer. Same thing for the tennis center.

Good idea. Who runs Chastain? They do a good job.

Alcohol can only be allowed if the city owns it. Concert series won't matter if the folks in the seats can only drink 7up. I doubt a private business can serve alcohol that close to a school either. Also if it was private -they would need all kinds of variances: located in the middle of a residential area & they didn't follow the city's own rules on number of parking spots required.

I mean, most all of them cost PTC money.

FYI, the City of Atlanta owns Chastain, and the neighbors complain constantly about the parking/noise etc. I agree it's nice, but they actually use it regularly, and the residents here wouldn't put up with that.

Lets start with Bernie & the Mayor!

Gee the City of Atlanta runs Chastain and it is actually successful. Wow.

You are right people here would complain about the noise, but we aren't happy with the oldies either.

We seem to be going in the wrong direction.

Strongly disagree, I might add.

seem to be out of Ms. Yawn's control! Sometimes you have to do the best with what [little] you've got!! Anytime I have had contact with her, those smiles makes me feel like me and my family are welcome (and appreciated) there! PTC needs to come together, and help save this wonderful venue!
And I like some of the newer bands, too, but I will sing and dance with the "geriatric" crowd under the stars any night - SAFE and LOCAL!!
A lot of us like to go to college football games on Saturdays,(just not Auburn - ew!)and some of us even support our local high school athletes under the Friday night lights - that's why it is nice to have the Friday and Saturday shows!!

Not only does Ms. Yawn not know how to run an Amphitheater, she doesn't know anything about running a tennis center either! What experience does she have in either area? Whats going to happen with the tennis facility...please don't tell us that Ben Maes is going to continue to run that place! He has proven that he doesn't have any people skills, know how to run a tennis facility, hire any good pros or make himself available to anyone for any kind of discussions concerning the place. Really, the place has gone down hill, has lost members, no junior tournament players to speak of!

Unlike tennis Larry and jsmith, I have no problem hiring a girl that is utterly unqualified to a job such as manage the amphitheatre and Tennis Center. I just wish she was at least kind of hot.

I was looking forward to that show, and he's cancelled shows all over, including PTC.

Unless they actually start to book current entertainers, the only problem you will really have will be selling any tickets at all.

That's right Fred (the real mayor) Brown goes to Fayetteville instead. How's that for a comment on the quality of the talent when the namesake snubs the place.

Isn't this what Rapson/Weed/Brown wanted to do six years ago??? Didn't Logsdon say they were crazy?

What a debacle! What happened to the amphitheater because you couldn't get tickets in the past?

More government socialism.

What about Bernies right hand man, his assistant. Hell, let him run it we might as well get something outa him for all the money he's costing us. Maybe he can fix it so Bernie doesn't spill wine on any more of our Officers shoes!

Maybe if the current geriatric crowd of "season ticket holders" weren't pandered to so much, things would get better. Old folks aren't the only people in this town that spend money. How about letting more youthful bands play? Up and coming bands would probably love the opportunity to play here and there are plenty of teenagers with buttloads of their parents money to fill that place up. The younger crowd couldn't be more hassle than all the likered up old farts that leave those lame old shows. Small venue doesn't have to equal has been acts. 3 Dog Night? No thanks!

And for this resident who preferred Friday night concerts in order to go to Auburn Football games should be sent to Auburn!

Why is it we must always "hire a new manager?"
Don't we have enough smart people already on the payroll for that?
What will that person do in the wintertime?

There are whole organizations full of names of Venue Managers that you can pick from however! They all want $100,000 if they have been successful! Wintertime or no!

This is a good example, I'm afraid, of just how well we will manage them, however. Not on Saturday nights, my ggggg.

Maybe you could find someone with enough guts also to run an excellent teen center with everything in it? Maybe.

Maybe they should hire an amphitheater manager like they have always had. Then let Lauren Yawn focus on other things instead of pretending like she knows what she is doing at the amphitheater. I am a season ticket holder and often see her at the concerts either frantically running around or sitting at a gold table with her friends. Just hire someone who's had experience and knows what they are doing. It's that simple.

Ms Yawn seems to think she can fix everything simple by smiling. A question I would like answered is why is her boyfriend always allowed to go backstage to meet the bands? Is he a sponsor?

It would take an Auburn fan to bring football (played in the fall) into a debate about concerts at The Fred (played in the summer) as a reason to reschedule.

God, please save us from fools. That means the Auburn lady and Harold and Cyndi.

Solution is easy. Take a page out of the stevebrownplaybook and fire whatever group is running the show and hire someone who may or may not know what he or she is doing. Let's see - Christi Rapson? Leslie Mitchell? Nancy Price? Katie Evans? No, no, no. They have all done a good job. Let's get someone unproven and new to the City. OK?

Submitted by CuriousBob on Fri, 09/05/2008 - 12:35pm.

Seems to me she had put the Fred on the map. Ahh, but she made the fatal mistake of actually wanting to be rewarded for doing a good job. How silly of her?? The city was paying her peanuts for providing a venue that was making money consistantly.

The new manager's job is going to be a contract job....kind of an at-will employee that can be let go by simply not renewing...should save the city money on benefits. It will also, simplify the problem of eliminating a poor performer. I kind of like this idea!

I do think someone should offer Kristi the opportunity to apply. Shouldn't the contract pay a salary with an incentive? Oh, and another thing...let the new mgr decide whether the venue should be one day or two. That's what managers do--they manage!..duh!

Submitted by Bonkers on Fri, 09/05/2008 - 2:59pm.

She sued the city!!!

And you want to hire her again?

It is and was a part-time job at best and no simple job like that pays anywhere near what she wanted in salary!

The town officials must have someone who can contact suppliers and get decent entertainment. Surely someone in the recreation department can handle maintenancve and cleaning?

As to a contact for changes and escorts---a hundred people would love that!

Don't set up another Tennis Center fiasco.

Let us not put another 75,000 dollar person on the tax dole just to schedule 10 or so shows with a booking company! That would pay Cher to come here!

If there aren't current members of the dole who can do that, then we need to replace them! Heck, I'll do it for free! City workers can clean up the place, I won't scrub up that wine!

Submitted by mudcat on Wed, 09/03/2008 - 7:01pm.

$75,000 is about right for that job if done properly.

Cher would be good if she could be 20 years younger. Poor babe is past the prime.

Neal Sedaka and Bobby Vinton would be better. God, I love Bobby's leather pants!!!

Again, $75,000 for a professional would be worth it. The non-professionals don't get the job done. Maybe we could fire the assistant city manager and use half his salary to get the show business started.

We deserve it.
