Solutions sought to amphitheater’s projected $236K loss this year

Peachtree City officials are hoping to get public input Tuesday night on operations of the city’s amphitheater and tennis center.

The amphitheater, home to the city’s summer concert series, is planning to scale back its concert schedule next year from two shows per artist to one per artist for the 2009 season. That announcement came as the city’s tourism association published budget projections that the amphitheater may lose $236,000 this year.

There is some wiggle room, however, as there are three concerts left in this season that could bring an uptick in revenues, a tourism official told the City Council last week.

The workshop meeting will be hosted Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

The new plan would not include a ticket price increase and the facility will continue to book 10 artists are the current series does, officials have said.

Mayor Pro-Tem Cyndi Plunkett said the meeting will include a presentation by the Tourism Association but she wants public input also.

“We want to hear how they think it should be handled,” Plunkett said, adding that some residents might be OK with the way the amphitheater is being operated now.

“They might not care if it loses money. They want to see it stay the way it is,” Plunkett said.

Plunkett, who also sits on the tourism board, said the amphitheater originally had each artist come just for one night when the concert series started. She said the two night per artist schedule “experiment” has failed.

The tourism association operates both the amphitheater and the tennis center on behalf of the city, which owns both facilities.

An open meeting being called by the City Council on the Amphitheater and Tennis Center Tuesday night. This is your chance to be heard. Everyone knows that you haven't had that chance at the tennis center for the last year! How can a company keep any one in charge of a budget that loses $236k??? what a disgrace! If you can not attend the meeting at least send them an e-mail. All city council e-mails can be found on the city web site. If you don't take this opportunity now for either venue than the city council will think everything is ok when it isn't!

We have had a Saturday GOLD table from the beginning. You know... Back when it was 1/3rd the cost of today!!! And you actually felt "welcome" back then. And your tables were not jammed in like sardines.

I say look back at the excellent job Kristi Rapson did running the thing and take a few lessons. Re-appoint a tourism board that actually thinks like the residents. In the "old days", Renewals were 99%. How about now? This is our last season. Good luck. You have run a good thing into the ground. Current administration and Tourism Board just don't get it. The Amphitheater was in the black and held back on making a profit back in those years as it was a non-profit venue. WAKE UP.

Are holding a meeting to decide on the Amphitheater, are they?
Doesn't the "Tourism Authority" run that enterprise?
And the Tennis Center as a group, what about it?

Just who is responsible for these venues? The debts, I mean---and maybe the operation---such as how many shows, how often?
That seems to be the problem---not the quality of the shows or who picks the shows and publicizes them!

What are the plans for the "winter" for the Amphitheater? The Tennis Center? Are there fancy Tennis tournaments in the winter?

The "two night per artist has failed," said the temporary Mayor of PTC!
Why, because it lost money, maybe? I didn't see the Tennis Center "fail" when it lost tons of money!

It is a simple matter of management! That is why we con't have a youth facility worth a grain of salt! Too much like work and lack of expertise in the management!
What a near shame it is to let Fayetteville show us how to continue it.
