PTC to give tourism association $35K towards shortfall

An agreement has been drafted for Peachtree City to pay $35,000 to the city's Tourism Association to help cover an expected year-end shortfall of $82,000.

The agreement is due to be voted on Thursday night by the City Council; it was added to the council's agenda in a notice sent late Tuesday afternoon.

The $35,000 would come from the city's share of hotel motel tax revenues, according to the proposal. City finance staff, in a memo to council, noted that the city's hotel motel tax revenues will likely end the year about $41,000 ahead of projections.

In a memo to the Tourism Association, executive director Lauren Yawn said the shortfall is due to a decline in revenue, not an increase in spending.

The association, which operates the amphitheater and tennis center for the city, is projecting a $236,000 loss this year for the amphitheater but a $3,700 profit for the tennis center.

Meanwhile officials are proposing next year's budget with a dramatic shift in the concert series: while there would still be 10 acts, they would only play one night instead of the current two weekend shows.

Should that course of action be adopted, the association is predicting a drop in ticket sales revenues and sponsorship money. But the change would also trim more than $730,000 compared to the amphitheater's current budget.

Two-thirds of the city's hotel motel tax already goes to the tourism association, although 20 percent of the association's revenue is passed on to the city's airport authority.

As I understand it, the PCTA is a private entity and is only a partner with Peachtree City's government, not a part of. To that extent, how is it either legal or ethical for the city to transfer publicly-acquired funds to a private entity?

Can individuals who have homes in jeopardy of foreclosure in PTC now receive money from the city to cover their shortfall? How about TDK or Hoshizaki? If they are experiencing red budgets, can they get some money from PTC?

We are seeing the progeny established by the precedent of bailing out the Tennis Center in the first place.

That is the root of the problem re: your legal questions.

It's a non-profit component unit of the City of PTC and its 5 person board is picked by the city Council of PTC. It's basically the same as what the Development Authority was before and there is nothing unusual about city gov lending money or giving money to an authority. They already have done so with PTCTA as their financials show a debt due to the City of over 140K. All that started LONG before any Tennis Center loan bailout too and not just with Tourism or the Development Authority, etc.

We are "fools" for asking simple questions as taxpayers?

No, the fools are the ones who feel privileged for being on the tax payroll!

It would be one thing if you framed your questions in a non accusatory manner, but you don't. Your convinced that it is always corruption, scandal, etc...

Nuke has it right, at least they understand the basics, which you clearly do not. Which is exactly my point.

My popcorn is good!

"Non accusatory?"

I see nothing wrong in asking for an accounting of tax dollars? Especially when the proposition is failing and need not!

The city should be getting tired of bailing out separate entities! Also, if I were a hotel, I would want to know where the money I charge customers goes! Maybe a ize rank would do more beter?

Who is it that understands the basics? What are the basics?

Isn't it odd that the Amphitheater lost a quarter million dollars and the Tennis Center made a small amount?

That is the reverse of what happened just a few years ago!!!!!

Is it impossible for anyone to keep an eye on more than one thing at a time in that outfit?

My goodness get George Jones, Merle Haggard, Ricky Scaggs, Fats Domino
(bring him in in a chair) and scores of others who are classics and I guarantee that you will fill the amphitheater if you do any kind of advertising job!

What did they quit spending at the Tennis Center? (Salaries, bonuses?)
I know they didn't double their income!
