Survey seeks attitude on PTC litter

Does every litter bit hurt?

That’s what Keep Peachtree City Beautiful, Inc., is asking residents of and visitors.

Determining perceptions and attitudes toward litter is the critical first step in developing anti-litter programs, according to Al Yougel, executive director of the non-profit organization.

“We have to know what people think before we can design effective educational, enforcement and clean up campaigns,” Yougel said.

The 26 question survey is available at six locations throughout Peachtree City as well as on the City’s web site. The paper version is available at city hall, the Library, The Gathering Place, the tennis center, public works office and the Kedron Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center. Online, the survey can be found at www.peachtree-city.org under City Departments/Public Works/Keep PTC Beautiful.

The survey includes questions about participants’ perceptions and attitudes, such as whether the city has a littering problem, and whether it costs taxpayer money and hurts the environment.

Completing the survey takes less than one minute and will be available until the end of August.

In the meantime, Keep Peachtree Beautiful will be conducting a ground survey to determine the location of the most severely littered areas in the City.

“The existence of over 87 miles of multi-use paths, together with our street/highway system really presents us with two transportation networks,” Yougel says. “I suspect that we will find that the cause, type and circumstances surrounding the litter of one network will not be identical to the other.”

Keep Peachtree City Beautiful, Inc. is always in need of volunteers. Interested individuals can register on the same web page as the survey. And yes, every litter bit does hurt.

Keep PTC Beautiful Survey Link

Why not just include this in both the hardcopy article as well as (and especially) the online version?

The City has always had a very cheap solution right in their hands to the litter problem on the cart paths. The fact is they choose not to use it. Fifteen years ago it was common for the City Court Judge to administer community service to offenders. Each week, groups of offenders patroled the cart paths picking up litter as part of their punishment. At some point the City went away from using the free labor and allowed the cart path system to be a waste land of trash. The solution is still there. Hundreds of hours of community service are given out on Wednesdays by the City Court Judge. Such a waste not to have the people who committed crimes on our City not give some of their time and labor back.

Boy that's thinking.

PTC's litter recipe is three parts crotchety "don't tread on me" types railing against any kind of municipal organized effort combined with one part country hillbilly who thinks throwing tires, swing sets and household trash in shallow pits in the greenbelt is acceptable disposal.

Here's a better solution: Require your franchaise hauler to place "city cans" along the paths and service them regularly as a part of the contract. Further, require them to sponsor and participate in clean-up events, providing 20 yard roll off boxes and other containers.

Nah. That's Little Russia.

Why in the world don't you go back to California! If I lived in a place that I hated so much and disliked everything that goes along with it, the simple thing to do would be to move. We have done just fine for all of these years without your guidance and wisdom thank you very much. I have lived here for 20 years and am a native Georgian and for some unknown reason have been able to live and prosper with out your help, god knows how I (we) did it. I sure that you are down deep a good guy. But you got to know that nothing pisses people off more than to have someone move into their city/town and to start telling them how/what they are doing wrong and to try and change their way of life. Try to fit in and quit telling us that we are crotchety hillbilly's that can't get along with out you. Then you just might find that this was a pretty nice little city before you got here and is still a great place to live and raise your children.

Listen. You can say, "I'm a Southerner" all you want. Nobody who moves here after you cares. Every tax payer has a right, from the day he moves here, to critisize, compliment, suggest, etc.

To think that someone should be forced to pay taxes and keep his mouth shut is unAmerican.

But I'll make you a deal. You pay my 4000 dollar per year property tax bill, my state income tax, my car tax, and all my sales tax, and I will not only shut up, but will vote the way you want me to.

Deal?

Yeah, I know you weren't talking to me, but still. The "I'm frum heeeere, and you aint frum 'round these here parts" crap makes you look very uneducated.

Everyone has an opinion. That's why it's called a bulletin board.

Personally, I don't like bunches of offenders tromping along the cart paths. Particularly unsupervised. You want to supervise?
I don't even like the school buses of prisoners doing that on the highway. Let them raise food somewhere in a big garden.
We pay employees to keep the highway and paths clean---let them work harder than they do!

This is wonderful...I had no idea that this was not being done already. In Fayetteville, the do community service at McCurry Park, or at least they did until very recently. Keep the faith

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Hello,
I walk the path system almost every day. When I walk I carry a bag and pick up litter. I am amazed at how much litter is produced every day. We do not need meetings or government to clean up litter. Get a bag when you walk or go for a G-ride and pick up some litter while you are out. We would have a litter free community sooner than you know. We are the power, Be a citizen!! Fair tax now! Thanks for listening,.

You have to be of German extraction?

The problem is that litter laws are rarely enforced. In my fifty + years I have never, EVER seen or heard of anyone who was ticketed or arrested for littering.

I think the cops should ticket, and the courts heavily fine any non-patriotic American who would dare litter, even a cigarette butt.

Littering is unAmerican.

People who love their community, state and nation don't litter. Litter is probably (in my opinion) committed by people who don't have much and are jealous of those who worked hard to achieve what they have.

Just my opinion.

why not do as they say and actually pick up trash?

I know I do when I'm out on my cart.
