PTC scales back funds for I-85 studyFri, 08/08/2008 - 3:11pm
By: John Munford
Peachtree City has kicked in half of a requested $10,000 to kickoff a study that could lead to improvements of the crucial Interstate 85/Ga. Highway 74 interchange. Councilwoman Cyndi Plunkett said she felt other jurisdictions in Coweta should be asked to contribute first before the city agreed to pay the entire $10,000 towards the estimated $100,000 needed for the interchange study. If such efforts are unsuccessful council could revisit the matter to perhaps fund the remaining $5,000, Plunkett said. Reducing the funding to $5,000 from the $10,000 request was approved on a 4-1 vote with Councilman Don Haddix voting no. Haddix said since the county funded $40,000 roughly a third of that is coming from city residents anyway because they pay county taxes. Haddix said he didn’t want the city to spend any money on the project, and he voted against the appropriation. The project is part of the Tri County Alliance efforts to address growing problems at the interchange, which is the main artery city residents use to commute to and from Atlanta, along with motorists from other jurisdictions. TCA has already raised $50,000 for the project from the City of Fairburn and the South Fulton Community Improvement District. That’s on top of the $40,000 contributed by Fayette County, said City Manager Bernie McMullen. The group hopes to have the project underway by September. Peachtree City is a member of TCA along with Fulton and Coweta counties in addition to the municipalities of Senoia, Tyrone, Fairburn and Union City. McMulllen said the DOT requires the study before any improvements can be considered by the agency. “Getting this study going will have a significant positive impact on the commuting citizens of Peachtree City,” Logsdon said. login to post comments |
