PTC scales back funds for I-85 study

Peachtree City has kicked in half of a requested $10,000 to kickoff a study that could lead to improvements of the crucial Interstate 85/Ga. Highway 74 interchange.

Councilwoman Cyndi Plunkett said she felt other jurisdictions in Coweta should be asked to contribute first before the city agreed to pay the entire $10,000 towards the estimated $100,000 needed for the interchange study. If such efforts are unsuccessful council could revisit the matter to perhaps fund the remaining $5,000, Plunkett said.

Reducing the funding to $5,000 from the $10,000 request was approved on a 4-1 vote with Councilman Don Haddix voting no. Haddix said since the county funded $40,000 roughly a third of that is coming from city residents anyway because they pay county taxes. Haddix said he didn’t want the city to spend any money on the project, and he voted against the appropriation.

The project is part of the Tri County Alliance efforts to address growing problems at the interchange, which is the main artery city residents use to commute to and from Atlanta, along with motorists from other jurisdictions.

TCA has already raised $50,000 for the project from the City of Fairburn and the South Fulton Community Improvement District. That’s on top of the $40,000 contributed by Fayette County, said City Manager Bernie McMullen.

The group hopes to have the project underway by September.

Peachtree City is a member of TCA along with Fulton and Coweta counties in addition to the municipalities of Senoia, Tyrone, Fairburn and Union City.

McMulllen said the DOT requires the study before any improvements can be considered by the agency.

“Getting this study going will have a significant positive impact on the commuting citizens of Peachtree City,” Logsdon said.

My stated reason for voting against it was not because it is a bad project but because the years of double taxation need to come to an end.

The County, in many areas, deducts our taxes from the total costs of certain things and only looks at the balance for them to fund. So PTC not only pays once in County taxes but a second time via PTC taxes used by County residents. They expect our extra money.

So, in this project roughly $13,400.00 of the $40,000.000 comes from PTC. Another $5,000.00 now has us contributing about $18,400.00, which is about 41% of the total $45,000.00 for the benefit of all of Fayette County. We pay much higher percentages in the issues of Recreation, in example.

The full $10,000.00 would be 47%.

We need to correct past policies and shift costs to a far more equitable distribution.

Did the county expect money from us on this issue? I don't know, but I do know what the net effect that resulted.

Peachtree City owes you a debt of gratitude for for bringing to light that the "double dipping" form of taxation that has been the norm for years. Finally, we have someone who is willing to make a stand.

Please consider a run for mayor.

see you run for mayor. Peachtree City needs someone like you who is willing to look out for and stand up for our community. We are in need of good leadership. Call on me to help in any way when you make this decision!

Would it be too much to ask to try and have a city government for PTC next time made up of people who don't really want the job?

I somehow mistrust those who plot and scheme for years about how to get elected. They have to make promises of: I'll scratch your back, you mine!

There must be dozens of people here who don't have any interest in who gets what who would simply manage the town for four years!

The jobs shouldn't pay anything except expenses, number one, and that would solve most of the problem.

Successful people who don't need anything except a job well done are what we need. Better yet no lawyers, developers, bankers, and real estate tycoons.

Carbon can't be mayor because he said he would do it--it has to be someone who doesn't want to do it. That's a shame because I think Bonkers would be the perfect candidate. I can see yard upon yard of signs saying "I go bonkers over Bonkers" and "Think you are confused now? vote for Bonkers and you will be totally confused." Bonkers doesn't like anybody so we would not have to worry about him doing favors for his friends--he doesn't like animals so we know leash laws would be enforced--come to think of it he would probably institute a leash law for children. Most of the policemen would either be sitting in the police station 'cause he doesn't like it that there are only 'phone answerers' there now. The rest would be sitting outside of or in the bars counting how many drinks a person has. He would outlaw blogging about such mundane things as vacations, the big catch, kayaks or people's health. And last but not least, he would keep us so confused that we could not complain because we would not know what to complain about. Come to think of it, we should not be selfish and keep him locally. Let's put him on the national ticket--thinking like that belongs to the country--no, the world. I can see it now an international government with Bonkers in charge. Placards unite---"Viva Le Bonkeir", "Ich bin Bonken"--sorry, I am not multi-lingual like Bonkers but he has my vote.

Didn't the fellow "sage" run for sheriff if you wanted him? He didn't win did he?

I'm not much interested in city government management. New ideas are frowned upon! I would like to try and run it once though, by laying off one-half of the staff, (by need not by seniority) approving only those invoices for payment that had to be spent, and putting all cops on foot except two cars worth to chase bank robbers. Call the sheriff to chase anyone who leaves town late at night.

Then I would personally publish the detailed operation of the Tennis Center, Amphitheater, Airport, and hotel tax expenditures, and any bank loans pending! All details!

No children leash laws! But I would invent a cat leash. Cats can be herded if on a leash!

I would change the format of this blog if I could so that any of the following words would automatically put the comment into a special area for people who like to read and publish such stuff:

The words are:
Panama City; fishing, restaurants, eating, bands, beer, cool one, suds, pick-up truck, NASCAR, racin, rasslin, Nancy Grace, Limburger, Hannity, Newt, Bars, skin color reference, Southern illegals, Clayton, illegals in our schools, Aa-Rabbs, mooselums, towel-heads, low-riders, long shirts, 400 dollar tennis shoes, delta, eastern, pilots, pilot's wives, empty stores, zoning (not enforced anyway); and liberals.

Bonkers could be Mayor and his other entities could serve on the council, planning committee, etc and we would pay one salary. Bet there would still be squabbling between them - bet they couldn't decide on an issue. One thing to be concerned (one?) is that we would have to plan any trips out of town for day as he will send the sherrif after anyone who leaves town at night. Also, I would like to own the store supplying shoes to the police as they will all be walking. Oh, but wait, would the foot patrol be the ones arresting bloggers for mentioning Panama City, or would there be a separate blogger patrol? And can you mention just Panama? Would bloggers need to register with the city so Mayor Bonkers could ensure that the blogging rules were followed? Mayor Bonkers has such a nice ring to it. For once-truth in advertising!

Submitted by Bonkers on Tue, 08/12/2008 - 1:05pm.

I have no "other" entities!

I want no salary!

I wouldn't have any trouble making a decision if one came up.

Well, at one time they were "flat feet."

The blog control is automatic by the word used!!!Some can be added later... like dollaradayandfound, sage, etc.

Mayor Bonkers

That means that both sides can buy you off instead of just one.

Besides, it's time to climb aboard the BPR/Lily/Patches/ToniR train...CHOO CHOO!!!!!! I don't think she lives in PTC so we have to get at least one personality to move so she qualifies. CHOO-CHOO!

Bonkers, I like the way you think on this subject. You keep coming up with concepts like this and the whole political system would be turned upside down. Keep it up! Observer

Just how do you get people to hold office who do not want to hold office? When the next election comes around, do we just walk around asking people if they want to be mayor, council member etc., and if they say no we tap them them on the shoulder and say "You're it"?

Submitted by Bonkers on Mon, 08/11/2008 - 3:29pm.

I have to explain everything to you!

Ask for an application from anyone who wants to serve one term, then have the leaving Mayor, etc., interview those applicants simply to see if they qualify.

Allow all that qualify to run (qualify means: a citizen, been here long enough, not a felon, a taxpayer or retired, and can be ugly and not much of a speaker.

Top two get a run-off, if necessary.

Thanks to both of you for your votes of confidence.

This request/question is an FAQ which is growing in frequency. As is the next election in general, for both Doug Sturbaum and myself.

Mike, if you want to sit down with Doug and me and talk about the future of PTC, we would be happy to do so.

MYTMITE, any time you and/or others want to sit down and talk, just let me know. Doug and I are both available.

I am well aware this issue is well over a year away. But I am also well aware various interest groups are already on the move in PTC.

If you fellows don't mind, I would prefer that you NOT "sit down" at your meeting!
If you sit down there is sure to be beer. If there is beer, than it will last half the night. If it lasts half the night then we are doomed!

Please stand up and get it done quickly!
