A Beverly Hills hotel security guard told FOXNews.com he intervened this week between a man he identified as former Sen. John Edwards and tabloid reporters who chased down the former presidential hopeful after what they're calling a rendezvous with his mistress and love child.

The Beverly Hilton Hotel guard said he encountered a shaken and ashen-faced Edwards — whom he did not immediately recognize — in a hotel men's room early Tuesday morning in a literal tug-of-war with reporters on the other side of the door.

"What are they saying about me?" the guard said Edwards asked.

"His face just went totally white," the guard said, when Edwards was told the reporters were shouting out questions about Edwards and Rielle Hunter, a woman the National Enquirer says is the mother of his child.

The guard said he escorted Edwards, who was not a registered guest at the hotel, out of the building after 2 a.m. Edwards did not say anything while he was escorted out, said the guard, adding that at times the reporters on the scene were "rough on him," sticking a camera in his face and shouting questions.

The guard did not recognize Edwards at the time of the incident, but said he concluded it was the 2008 presidential hopeful after hearing reports about the incident and finding an Enquirer reporter's notebook at the scene.

The guard said during the chase the reporters had dropped the notebook, which he picked up. "This book has everything in it on him," he said, referring to Edwards. The guard later confirmed Edwards' identity after being shown a photograph.

A former campaign staffer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told FOXNews.com he wishes he were "more surprised" to hear reports Edwards was visiting Hunter. "I'm definitely upset by it. I wish I was more surprised, though."

Edwards this week has repeatedly refused to comment on the Enquirer report. Asked about it on Thursday at an event in New Orleans, he said: "I have no idea what you're asking about. I've responded, consistently, to these tabloid allegations by saying I don't respond to these lies and you know that ... and I stand by that."

Edwards spokesmen did not respond to repeated calls by FOXNews.com to respond to this story.

I’m amazed that you don’t believe this story; especially after it was reported not once but twice by the National Enquirer. If they printed it, it must by the gospel truth. They couldn’t print it otherwise. You are demonstrating your bias toward believing the MSM while simultaneously dissing Patches/bpr’s favorite and most reliable sources of information. After the NE got sued a few times and lost big, they kind of cleaned up their act to a level above Jerry Springer or so. They have broken some news stories ahead of the lazy MSM in recent years and tend to be pretty accurate when it comes to good 'ol infidelity info and Hollyweird.

Oh, as far as citing the NE, the LA Times does right here on two big stories the MSM wouldn't report for a while back in 2001:
Clinton scandal and Jesse's kid scandal the MSM didn't report

It was also NE that broke the Gary Hart-Donna Rice-Monkey Business photos that killed his campaign. NE also was the first with the Gennifer Flowers-Bill Clinton story and took down Dick Morris too. With the exception of Morris, I'm seeing a whole list of prominent Dems getting busted by NE. Edwards is just the latest, though he had no chance at the VP job, which is why it isn't getting much attention nor do many care.

No, they just have a different bias. They didn't do much more than repeat what NE had stated, though they left out that some of the details from months ago when NE ran a story about why they thought Edwards had a love child and blah blah blah.

Seems like people should be happy that Fox gives a more "conservative" slant but all I still hear is moaning about the other channels or people griping about Fox NEws. Who cares? If you think CNN or ABC or whoever is slanted, don't watch it. If anyone thinks the MSM has that much influence on the undecided, I hate to break it to you but most could care less. They watch/listen to what they already agree with, not anything with an opposing viewpoint or slant.

I said from the first time I hear Edwards speak that there was something sooo...sleazy about him. Guess my intuition was right. To think how many like him have been put in that Capital Building, on both sides of the aisle, by us, the American People! Man, we need to do some "weeding" up there!

First, as others have said, I don't count the National Enquirer as a valid source. Secondly, John Edwards JUST DOESN'T MATTER. His campaign is over, along with Hillary's, Romney's, Huckabee's and all the other also-rans. This is an election between John McCain and Barack Obama. If Edwards were named Obama's running mate, THEN it might matter...I'm not wasting my time on any failed candidacies at this point
