MARTA in Fayette County?

I had the chance to ask commission candidate Lee Hearn about an issue printed in a campaign piece Fayette residents received in the mail over the weekend concerning a desire to bring MARTA buses to the county. He said it’s late in the race to be refuting this kind of untruth but he wants voters to know HE IS ABSOLUTELY NOT IN FAVOR OF BRINGING MARTA TO FAYETTE COUNTY.

I've had several opportunities to get to know Mr. Hearn during this campaign season and it seems he has tried to run a positive, open, honest campaign. It's shameful to try to dig up dirt on another candidate and then present it at the eleventh hour so as to prevent the candidate from responding.

I think the hard work I've seen from Mr. Hearn leading up to this election will continue if he's allowed to serve our county as a commissioner. I like what I see in Mr. Hearn's campaign style and plan to vote for him.

Just setting the record straight...jb

BUT commuter rail, hooked to the airport and then into a central depot downtown with convenient light rail and bus connections downtown would suit a lot of commuters.

In the days of $4. $5. and perhaps $7. gas we might see a shift to such transportation.

Imagine Ms. Stepford dropping Mr. Stepford off at Peachtree City terminal. His $4.00 fare to the airport for his business trip would be far less than the $10.00 worth of gas his SUV would consume.
He'd also save on the $9.00 a day parking fee.

We'd have a little less traffic and a little less air pollution.
50-100-200 people would move on each train effortlessly, sipping a Latte and enjoying their copy of the Citizen. Using wireless to work with lap-top, blackberry and cell phone.

What a win-win for all..

Oh wait I forgot the train comes back and can bring all the mayhem seekers from Atlanta.. I can see them now getting off the train, carrying concealed weapons, looking for the nearest soft target and asking "where the white women at?" my apologizes to Mel Brooks for stealing that line.

This fear has not prevented commuter rail in Boston from extended 50 miles North, West and South of the City. In New York from reaching into Conn. and up along the Hudson River. In Chicago, Miami, Dallas and on and on.

I don't know why the candidates were asked questions about MARTA, it would never ever ever ever be viable in Fayette County. Commuter rail would be the likely option. There are big differences between the two.

MARTA runs just about all day, every day. Its cheap.

Commuter rail (the type that would be appropriate for Fayette County) runs ONLY during rush hours and ONLY in the direction of rush hour traffic. Its also expensive, probably $4-$8 each way.

If they design it correctly, it would be a great addition to FC at some time in the future. MARTA trains and buses are a whole different animal that commuter rail.

I just happened to see a sample ballot that our democrats will be using to vote today.

The dems will be voting on

Whether or not the right to vote should be granted to 16yrs olds. (good one)

Should Fayette County develop a public transportation system connected to regional rail systems. ( another good one) Because as it is now the freelunch-0-crats have to drive here to rob us.....if we bring in MARTA they could just buy a home and live next to us. Much easier for the cabbagetown, and riverdale crowd. JeeeeeZZZZZ why have we made it so hard for them?

Do you think alternative programs for youth offenders are more effective than incarceration in preventing furture criminal activity?

Uh, no, we are reaping the rewards right now of the pop psychology don't spank them thing. It's not working.

So how will the dems vote today on these burning issues?

How come the Republicans don't get these "tough" questions?

are the ones who voted on our DA, Tax Commissioner, etc. so now only those Republicans who voted the Incumbents to stay in office will be able to complain.

One other thing the Democrats got to vote on was if the county Coroner should be voted on by both parties, not one. I think that method would be the best for every office in this county, we need the best people, not the best person of a particular party.
