Benn Fraker, Olympian, Donations

Hello everyone,

This is my very first post but one of great importance!!!!

I am trying to gather donations for Benn and his family to travel to China for the Olympics. I've sent out an email to my neighbors and I've posted it below if anyone is intereseted in supporting an Olympic athlete and his family.

I know the family would really appreciate any support. Thanks.

Here's the email.....

Hey All,

We were excited to learn Benn Fraker, son of Marsha and Tom Fraker, made the U.S. Olympic Kayak team. He'll be heading to Beijing, China soon to represent the United States in the summer Olympics. See the story here: http://www.thecitizen.com/node/29908.

Marsha is teacher at Huddleston elementary school and previously taught fourth grade at Crabapple elementary.

The cost of a trip to China can be very expensive. Airfare, food and lodging, event tickets and transportation for a family can cost in excess of $10,000. Delta Air Lines has graciously given the Fraker's round trip airfare to China on Northwest Airlines. However, the remaining costs are still very substantial.

Those of you who know Marsha and Tom know that they would never ask for financial support. However this is such a huge expense, and a once in a lifetime event, that we have offered to help them.

Because Marsha has had such a tremendous influence on many children and their families and because Olympic athletes from Peachtree City are so rare, we saw this as an opportunity to support a good cause.

Benn already has a website and we asked the Frakers if we could use it to solicit donations. The website can also be used to track Benn's progress throughout the Olympic games. The website is...

benn2china.synthasite.com (cut and paste this address into the subject line, no "www")

If you'd like to donate to support Benn and the Fraker's travel expenses you can go to Benn's website and click on the "Donate" link at the top of the page. Anything will help. It's very quick and easy.

Please pass this email on to anyone you know that would like to support an Olympic athlete and his family.

Thanks for all your support.

Hello everyone,

This is not my very first post but one of great importance!!!! You see.... I'm planning a trip too.

So don't leave me out either. I'm soliciting donations so that I can offset the cost of a very pricey fishing trip to Costa Rica this winter. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I would deeply appreciate any all donations that are received. All I can give you in return is to post some pics of my fish on www.fayettenet.com.

To arrange a cash donation you can e-mail me at gitreal@hotmail.com.

Thanks for all the support. Smiling

Get well soon Wulf! Beat this thing so you can go to Costa Fishin' Place to see what those food stamps will buy At THIS Little Fishing Village. Smiling

I know I am going to beat it, I did once I can do again.

Beautiful place but they may not take my food stamps. I may need to make a trip over to the liquor store in Clayton County to cash them in. Word has it they are paying 30 cents on the dollar.

Sadly there’s not much difference in the worth of the US dollar vs food stamps.

Costa Rica would probably prefer the food stamps

Unfortunately one day we maybe heading toward the issuing of ration coupons.

We have got to get away from our dependence on foreign oil.

I was just a child but I remember food and gas rationing coupons. I also remember making 'margarine'. You would get a block of this white substance--thinking back it was probably a block of lard! You would also get a small packet of this orangy yellow powder. You would mix the yellow powder into the block of white stuff and it would resemble margarine--really not good at all but I guess it was better than nothing. My mom would save up coupons for something special. Even as a child you felt you were helping the war effort. Back then there was no welfare as we know it today. I remember that there were "poor houses" where older people with no families or means of support went to live. A young friend's parents ran one and the family lived there also. I think they probably got money from the state or county but I could not be sure. I would go visit her and the people looked well cared for and as happy as you could be in that situation I guess. At least that it the way it looked through a young child's eyes. A different time--a much different life.

We lived on my grandparent’s farm on the north side of Atlanta.
Pretty much all of our food was grown and raised on that farm. Granny Wulf churned her own butter. It maybe my aging memory but that butter and butter milk that granny made seemed to be pretty doggone good. Oh what I would give for a glass of that homemade buttermilk with some of grannies cornbread.

I remember when I was a about fifteen or sixteen years old, all I wanted to do was get off that farm and see the world. Since then I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to travel extensively through Europe and Asia but the older I get I find myself wishing that I was back on that farm.

I grew up on a farm, I couldn't wait to leave but now I wish I could go back.

I can remember as a teen-ager when we were bored or miserable about something I would tell my sisters, sarcastically "Someday we will look back on these as the good old days" and just as sarcastically they would reply "Yeah, right." Well, you know, they were the good old days. Once of my best memories is many years later after bringing my sister home from a chemo treatment and knowing there wasn't much time left, instead of going into the house, we sat outside in the yard with the warm sun beating down on us and reminisced about those days--nothing monumental-just every day things. One of us would say "Remember when" and off we would go with one tale or another. It was probably only an hour or so that we sat there but without saying it we both knew it was something precious and that it would not happen again. It is a memory I would not take a million dollars for. Too late we learn that it is just that which is important--not big houses, big cars, expensive vacations--keeping up the Jones' but some small thing that seemed so inconsequential at the time that brings the best memory and touches the heart. Too bad we sometimes learn it too late.

I know exactly what you are talking about, my sister has little time left and I treasure every minute I spend with her, we talk about the days before marriage and kids, and when we were just kids ourselves and all that mattered was the fun things that we were going to do that weekend. We actually got along better after we both left our parents house then we did when we lived there together. While I have a couple of half brothers and three half sisters, my sister Cathy is my only full sibling, and I love her so much and the thought of a world without her makes it that much more bleak.

I wish I had a magic wand to make your sister, muddle's wife, and wulf healthy and well.
I envy your close relationship with your sister. I know you treasure every moment with her. My only sister lived in PTC for years, moved to Ohio several years ago. Actually I've always been closer to my late husband's sister. We kinda grew up together, and got in trouble together. Smiling

I think about you and your sister and always remember you in my prayers. I wish I could help.

over the rough times. I knew the day I mentioned in my other post meant a lot to me but I didn't realize it had meant as much to her until another sister told me that she had told her about that day and they wondrful feeling it gave her. I know it sounds sappy but it was almost magical--just a soft warm Florida day like a million others. You feel so helpless and want to do so much and there really is nothing you can do but be there, let them know you love them, let them talk about whatever they want to talk about. That is probably what they want the most anyhow. I will keep you and your sister in my thoughts and prayers. Shalom

Just got back from a weekend in Savannah with mom, pop, and sis. We only see each other two or three times a year, so we do have to make the most of it. Hutch, my sister and I were tooth and nail in the house, but when she left for college I was lost (cause I no longer had a ride Smiling ). We are best friends now and have even debated sharing a house. Hutch, your sister is incredibly fortunate to have people in her life that think so highly of her and carry such love for her. Enjoy every moment with her! The love you share is therapy in and of itself.

Cheers,

Cy, there are times that I even have to remind myself of what is or is not important. It is so easy to get caught up in that every day rat race and not remember. Sometimes when I let the little things get to me or I start to wish I had something I don't have, I have to bring myself up short and know that in the grand scheme of life those things "don't amount to a hill of beans" to paraphrase Humphrey Bogart (in Casablanca, I believe--you know your memory goes after the first 100 years! LOL). So, it is important to keep perspective regardless of age. Thanks

Beach, lifeguards, waves, sand and sun. . .what a life! I had a wonderful time. No phones, no computers, no boss, just hanging out and doing what you please. Oh, I'm awake now, looks like I've returned to reality!

What did I miss while I was away?

Yep I agree, retirement training is fun. I'm finishing up a little two week spell away from my "cube" doing things around the house and finishing up some work stuff.

What did you miss; well, your boss "Git" just got back from his vacation but I suspect you already know that. Quick, look to your right, that's him peaking over your wall.

that were put in books and when a certain amount was saved they could be turned into a war bond. We would do this at school. One day, I believe it was Friday, you would bring your dime/s ( I think it was a dime) and it would get you a stamp for your book. Everyone was made to feel they were part of the effort. Children saved every cent they could to be able to buy these stamps, you didn't want to be the only student not participating. As I said previously, a different time-a different life.
Does anyone else have any memories of this type to share?

No donation too small. When I get enough for the gas Wulf, can we then work our some kind of deal on the food stamps? Or maybe we can just use them at the liquor store and forget about the trip to Publix.
