Red Room owner: no sign of fight before deadly punchFri, 07/11/2008 - 3:17pm
By: John Munford
The owner of the Red Room bar in Peachtree City is disputing a witness’s account that his security personnel didn’t intervene when a Hampton man was struck outside the bar June 28 in what turned out a week later to have been a deadly blow. Jamie Gagarin said he has been told that when the crowd exited the bar at closing time just before the incident there was no indication an altercation was brewing. So when the “sucker punch” struck Devan Abercrombie, 32, of Hampton, knocking him to the ground, there was no way his security officers could have seen it coming, Gagarin said. “It’s not like they were out there in a brawl,” Gagarin said, noting that as the customers left the bar at closing time there was no altercation or any argument going on. Gagarin said he wasn’t there to personally witness the events that police say led to Abercrombie’s death Saturday when he was taken off life support. The blow to Abercrombie caused him to fall to the pavement, striking his head. He died a week later, taken off life support after suffering a brain injury, one of his friends told The Citizen. One of the security officers “held a towel behind his head before the police and ambulance were even there,” Gagarin said. “It’s a tragedy and my thoughts and prayers go out to the Abercrombie family and all his friends,” Gagarin said. “It’s just a freak tragedy. ... I feel really really bad. It’s a really freak thing. We did everything in our power. Gagarin dismissed the witness’s account that one of the security officers said anything that happens outside the Red Room “is Peachtree City’s problem.” “That’s not correct. You wouldn’t have heard anything remotely close to anything coming from one of my employees or anything like that,” Gagarin said. Gagarin said he has two security officers present all the time and he contends they acted appropriately. There is video from inside the bar prior to the incident but no video of the outside area, Gagarin said, adding that he hadn’t reviewed the video yet. “I feel really really bad,” Gagarin said. “It’s just a really really freak thing. We did everything in our power.” login to post comments |
