Red Room owner: no sign of fight before deadly punch

The owner of the Red Room bar in Peachtree City is disputing a witness’s account that his security personnel didn’t intervene when a Hampton man was struck outside the bar June 28 in what turned out a week later to have been a deadly blow.

Jamie Gagarin said he has been told that when the crowd exited the bar at closing time just before the incident there was no indication an altercation was brewing. So when the “sucker punch” struck Devan Abercrombie, 32, of Hampton, knocking him to the ground, there was no way his security officers could have seen it coming, Gagarin said.

“It’s not like they were out there in a brawl,” Gagarin said, noting that as the customers left the bar at closing time there was no altercation or any argument going on.

Gagarin said he wasn’t there to personally witness the events that police say led to Abercrombie’s death Saturday when he was taken off life support.

The blow to Abercrombie caused him to fall to the pavement, striking his head. He died a week later, taken off life support after suffering a brain injury, one of his friends told The Citizen.

One of the security officers “held a towel behind his head before the police and ambulance were even there,” Gagarin said.

“It’s a tragedy and my thoughts and prayers go out to the Abercrombie family and all his friends,” Gagarin said. “It’s just a freak tragedy. ... I feel really really bad. It’s a really freak thing. We did everything in our power.

Gagarin dismissed the witness’s account that one of the security officers said anything that happens outside the Red Room “is Peachtree City’s problem.”

“That’s not correct. You wouldn’t have heard anything remotely close to anything coming from one of my employees or anything like that,” Gagarin said.

Gagarin said he has two security officers present all the time and he contends they acted appropriately.

There is video from inside the bar prior to the incident but no video of the outside area, Gagarin said, adding that he hadn’t reviewed the video yet.

“I feel really really bad,” Gagarin said. “It’s just a really really freak thing. We did everything in our power.”

Wow, it is not surprising to hear his name in the local news. I'm surprised it has taken this long. I have know Jamie for 30 plus years growing up in PTC. To read the quotes in the article of Jamie giving his heart felt condolence makes me want to puke. Jamie has one person in mind, himself. He is a used car salesman that would sell his grandmother a lemon clunker, and he probably did. If you looked up loser on wikipedia.com, you would find a picture of Jamie G. Pretty much sums it up.

Wow. I cannot believe what I have just read. The fact that you,Gagarin, can sit here and just blatantly lie about everything that happened will confirm your seat in hell and pretty much just guaranteed the demise of your business whether it's 6 months or if its 2 years.I mean for starters the man that came over and assisted Devan was off duty. You made it out like it was one of your bouncers that was on duty. Also you said that none of your bouncers made the comment about not being thier problem that it was PTC's problem. Well I'm here to tell you that I am extremely close friends with everyone that was with Devan that night and two people both said that the bouncers stated that it wasn't there problem once outside the gate. That the parking lot was in PTC's jurisdiction and was not part of thier property. All this was said the day after Devan was hit and I do not see why they would lie to me or anyone else for that matter considering the circumstances. Also if there were no signs of a fight then why would Devan run over to get in the middle of a group of black guys and 1 white dude.Everything that was stated in the first article by Kristin was %100 true. I know all these people that made reports and I know them very well. The only lies that have stemmed from this are the ones that you are telling for whatever reason. Trying to save your business or trying to avoid lawsuits i guess. You "cared" so much but yet you can't even put up some type of makeshift memorial outside your club to at least recognize Devan. Or even take efforts to find out about the memorial service we had to at least pay your respects being as how this whole incident started at your club. I have lost a friend,a brother and one of the most unique people i have ever met in my life because of what? Nothing! But could this have been prevented if your "bouncers" had stepped in. Maybe. More than likely. Could this have been prevented if the police was called at the first signs of a problem. Maybe. But we will never know. All we do know is that the Red Room took no actions that night to try and difuse the situation thus resulting in the loss of an amazing person and the cause of unbearable pain for many many people.Myself and many other people will make sure your club doesn't see the light of day after we get done. And not only us wait till PTC has thier town and board meetings. I just wanted everyone to know that everything that this man is saying is a BOLDFACE LIE. Do not believe this.

Hey, I was just letting you know I'm still here. Get in touch if you want to chat about Devan. Glad you spoke out on here. The truth will all come out soon enough, and you're right, that business won't last long. I hope to see you next time I'm in town.

It has been two weeks since you had a fight and death outside of YOUR establishment and you still haven't reviewed any of your videos? What is wrong with you ? I know dozens and dozens of business owners and I have to tell you that would be one of the first things they would do. Do the police have them and if so , why haven't you reviewed the videos with them ? I also know several bar owners and they review video anytime anything is out of the ordinary, whether it is registers coming up short, liquor missing, or in your case a bar fight ending up with a death. If what you are saying is true you might want to rethink how you handle your business in the future if you want to hang on to it. You don't sound very bright by how this article reads.

Jamie doesnt care, he is drunk all the time at his establishment, cussing acting a fool, He even tried to blow fire one night drunk... I would ask everyone including the police department to look at other incidents that have taken place here and how they were carried out. In fact request a copy of all police reports filed against this establishment and you will see that EVEN THEIR SECURITY has acted in very CRIMINAL ways. In fact I believe there may actually be more than one lawsuit against this place that may need to become publice knowlege. How they handle security and "their" video tapes ought to be questioned also. I know jamie and the previous manager closely and am disgusted at the way this incident and others have been handled. I think that the PTC community ought to demand action and take just one moment and request their police records to be made public of all and any reports involving red room and serious crimes. Then everyone can see how they "handle" issues and people in general.
IE. For any reporter that wants a REAL good story pursue those reports form the PTCPD

the police have the video tapes and they were actually on channel 5 news the same day that the guy died. As for your slander and cruel assumptions of the owner and previous manager - From your statement that you know the "owner closely" I can assume probably)that you are one of the local drunks that have been banned from this establishment and threaten the security guards with law suits. Get a life

No I am not a banned drunk in fact something much different. I actually am not the type to frequent the bars, and the sad thing with that is the few times I have been there I have seen enough actions from the owners the management and employees,(from giving free drinks, drinking themeselves, to irresponsible criminal actions, to destroying evidence) There are many thing in question with everyone involved with this place. In fact with my first request to have the records of this establishment reviewed I feel that the true nature of this place will be revealed. Drug trafficking, sexual misconduct, involuntary manslaughter, sales after hours, sales to minors, the list can go on. and there are to other very heinous crimes that I believe are still open. What about security guards fratenizing with customers, even employees fratenizing with customers, what about attempted assaults. In fact I request that an investigation start on this establishment. I will even go as far to say it is in the best interest of PTC and fayette county as a whole to conduct a formal investigation on the establsihment and the slap on the hands it gets compared to the misconduct. In fact as for Jamie everyone who has ever met him knows he is an alcoholic and has some REAL PROBLEMS. In fact if I was Mike Stooksbury I would seriously get as much distance from Jamie's self-destructfulness as I can.

Sorry, but minus the alochol related items you mentioned I thought for a second you were talking about a few of the waffle house'a late at night in the area.

Just for the record the couple of times my wife and I went to the Red Room we did not see any type of the behavior you have mentioned. We actually enjoyed a glass of wine on the outside patio and listened to the music. It was early in the evening not sure what happens at any of these places in the late hours. I'm sure the late night bar scene draws plenty of rough rowdy activities and the PTC bars are not exempt of this type of crowd.

I really do not respond or get involved with these blogs but when I see people names and business's getting slandered and trashed without any respect or merit (heresay - blogger's opinion) it's just not fair.

Matter of fact a recent post stated the rules for posting?

"The rules for posting comments, blogs, or forum entries are as follows:

Keep it clean. No obscene language. No threats of physical harm. No personal attacks on private persons".

I guess from your blog - if you manage or own a business you are fair game for personal attacks and exempt from the rules. Good judgement, common sense and ethics should prevail before throwing someone under the bus. You turn could be right around the corner.

It is my understanding that Red Room's security has done more than just say it's PTC problem. It is also my understanding that they themselves(redroom security) has been under investigation for sexual assault that actually took place in the establishment. Some security! It is also my understanding that there have been three seperate complaints to the PTCPD and the better business bureau involving employee fratenization and sexual misconduct. Now I believe that is a story worth pursuing. It really blows my mind how bias the PTC media is in selecting and prosecuting businesses that time and time again conduct themselves in the heinous ways.

Is this the same Mike Stooksbury who is a local Realtor? If so, Mike seems to be a real decent and ethical guy.

I hope this is just sloppy reporting instead of sloppy thinking by the bar owner or the police - either have whom should have considered the inside video somewhat relevant.

Try harder people. This is a murder investigation.
