Work not done after parade, fireworks

Peachtree City’s annual July 4th parade is indeed quite the spectacle.

But after the crowd has gone, there’s still work to be done, as trash is left behind to be cleaned up.

The recreation department had a sweeper machine cover the route Friday after the parade, but the real cleanup effort was Saturday, the day after the parade, said Public Works Director Tom Corbett. That’s when crews from the recreation and public works departments spent more than five hours on cleanup from the parade and the fireworks display.

Trampled candy on the street poses a particular problem, as it can melt in the heat, making cleanup a little tougher, Corbett said. And despite the workers’ best efforts, it’s likely that empty candy wrappers will somehow make it into the waterways, he added.

In fact, some candy wrappers will be found in the grass over the next few weeks as workers pick up debris before mowing, Corbett said.

Corbett said crews did a good job in this year’s cleanup and will be preparing for next year’s parade, which will be during the city’s 50th anniversary celebration.
